Radio evidence for a shock wave reflected by a coronal hole

    Get PDF
We report the first unambiguous observational evidence in the radio range of the reflection of a coronal shock wave at the boundary of a coronal hole. The event occurred above an active region located at the northwest limb of the Sun and was characterized by an eruptive prominence and an extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) wave steepening into a shock. The EUV observations acquired by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) instrument on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory(SDO) and the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUVI) instrument on board the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory(STEREO-A) were used to track the development of the EUV front in the inner corona. Metric type II radio emission, a distinguishing feature of shock waves propagating in the inner corona, was simultaneously recorded by ground-based radio spectrometers. The radio dynamic spectra displayed an unusual reversal of the type II emission lanes, together with type III-like herringbone emission, indicating shock-accelerated electron beams. Combined analysis of imaging data from the two space-based EUV instruments and the Nancay Radioheliograph (NRH) evidences that the reverse-drifting typeiiemission was produced at the intersection of the shock front, reflected at a coronal hole boundary, with an intervening low-Alfv\'en-speed region characterized by an open field configuration. We also provide an outstanding data-driven reconstruction of the spatiotemporal evolution in the inner corona of the shock-accelerated electron beams produced by the reflected shock

The genome sequence and transcriptome of Potentilla micrantha and their comparison to Fragaria vesca (the woodland strawberry)

Background The genus Potentilla is closely related to that of Fragaria, the economically important strawberry genus. Potentilla micrantha is a species that does not develop berries, but shares numerous morphological and ecological characteristics with F. vesca. These similarities make P. micrantha an attractive choice for comparative genomics studies with F. vesca Findings In this study, the Potentilla micrantha genome was sequenced and annotated, and RNA-Seq data from the different developmental stages of flowering and fruiting were used to develop a set of gene predictions. A 327 Mbp sequence and annotation of the genome of P. micrantha, spanning 2,674 sequence contigs, with an N50 size of 335,712, estimated to cover 80% of the total genome size of the species was developed. The genus Potentilla has a characteristically larger genome size than Fragaria, but the recovered sequence scaffolds were remarkably collinear at the micro-syntenic level with the genome of F. vesca, its closest sequenced relative. A total of 33,602 genes were predicted, and 95.1% of BUSCO genes were complete within the presented sequence. Thus, we argue that the majority of the gene-rich regions of the genome have been sequenced Conclusions Comparisons of RNA-Seq data from the stages of floral and fruit development revealed genes differentially expressed between P. micrantha and F. vesca. The data presented are a valuable resource for future studies of berry development in Fragaria and the Rosaceae and they also shed light on the evolution of genome size and organization in this family

Artificial Lighting as a Vector Attractant and Cause of Disease Diffusion

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, epidemiologists have considered electrification to be a positive factor. In fact, electrification and plumbing are typical initiatives that represent the integration of an isolated population into modern society, ensuring the control of pathogens and promoting public health. Nonetheless, electrification is always accompanied by night lighting that attracts insect vectors and changes people's behavior. Although this may lead to new modes of infection and increased transmission of insect-borne diseases, epidemiologists rarely consider the role of night lighting in their surveys. OBJECTIVE: We reviewed the epidemiological evidence concerning the role of lighting in the spread of vector-borne diseases to encourage other researchers to consider it in future studies. DISCUSSION: We present three infectious vector-borne diseases-Chagas, leishmaniasis, and malaria-and discuss evidence that suggests that the use of artificial lighting results in behavioral changes among human populations and changes in the prevalence of vector species and in the modes of transmission. CONCLUSION: Despite a surprising lack of studies, existing evidence supports our hypothesis that artificial lighting leads to a higher risk of infection from vector-borne diseases. We believe that this is related not only to the simple attraction of traditional vectors to light sources but also to changes in the behavior of both humans and insects that result in new modes of disease transmission. Considering the ongoing expansion of night lighting in developing countries, additional research on this subject is urgently needed.National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), Brasilia, Brazi

SWELTO - Space WEather Laboratory in Turin Observatory

    Get PDF
SWELTO - Space WEather Laboratory in Turin Observatory is a conceptual framework where new ideas for the analysis of space-based and ground-based data are developed and tested. The input data are (but not limited to) remote sensing observations (EUV images of the solar disk, Visible Light coronagraphic images, radio dynamic spectra, etc...), in situ plasma measurements (interplanetary plasma density, velocity, magnetic field, etc...), as well as measurements acquired by local sensors and detectors (radio antenna, fluxgate magnetometer, full-sky cameras, located in OATo). The output products are automatic identification, tracking, and monitoring of solar stationary and dynamic features near the Sun (coronal holes, active regions, coronal mass ejections, etc...), and in the interplanetary medium (shocks, plasmoids, corotating interaction regions, etc...), as well as reconstructions of the interplanetary medium where solar disturbances may propagate from the Sun to the Earth and beyond. These are based both on empirical models and numerical MHD simulations. The aim of SWELTO is not only to test new data analysis methods for future application for Space Weather monitoring and prediction purposes, but also to procure, test and deploy new ground-based instrumentation to monitor the ionospheric and geomagnetic responses to solar activity. Moreover, people involved in SWELTO are active in outreach to disseminate the topics related with Space Weather to students and the general public

Acute Delta Hepatitis in Italy spanning three decades (1991–2019): Evidence for the effectiveness of the hepatitis B vaccination campaign

Updated incidence data of acute Delta virus hepatitis (HDV) are lacking worldwide. Our aim was to evaluate incidence of and risk factors for acute HDV in Italy after the introduction of the compulsory vaccination against hepatitis B virus (HBV) in 1991. Data were obtained from the National Surveillance System of acute viral hepatitis (SEIEVA). Independent predictors of HDV were assessed by logistic-regression analysis. The incidence of acute HDV per 1-million population declined from 3.2 cases in 1987 to 0.04 in 2019, parallel to that of acute HBV per 100,000 from 10.0 to 0.39 cases during the same period. The median age of cases increased from 27 years in the decade 1991-1999 to 44 years in the decade 2010-2019 (p < .001). Over the same period, the male/female ratio decreased from 3.8 to 2.1, the proportion of coinfections increased from 55% to 75% (p = .003) and that of HBsAg positive acute hepatitis tested for by IgM anti-HDV linearly decreased from 50.1% to 34.1% (p < .001). People born abroad accounted for 24.6% of cases in 2004-2010 and 32.1% in 2011-2019. In the period 2010-2019, risky sexual behaviour (O.R. 4.2; 95%CI: 1.4-12.8) was the sole independent predictor of acute HDV; conversely intravenous drug use was no longer associated (O.R. 1.25; 95%CI: 0.15-10.22) with this. In conclusion, HBV vaccination was an effective measure to control acute HDV. Intravenous drug use is no longer an efficient mode of HDV spread. Testing for IgM-anti HDV is a grey area requiring alert. Acute HDV in foreigners should be monitored in the years to come

Os resultados confirmam amplamente as hipóteses básicas e oferece um poderoso instrumento para a elaboração de sistemas de iluminação de impacto no que tange os insetosThe impact of light pollution on man and on the ecosystem is a rising concern among ecologists however, in the same time the human population is demanding more lighting for safety and comfort. In order to satisfy human lighting needs with a minimum impact on the ecosystem, manly on insects, we tested commercial equipments using different types of lights and using selective wavelength filters. The hypothesis underlying the experiment was that humans and insects have a different visual sensibility for wavelength, but insect attraction for lighting is not just a phototropism. Insects use artificial lighting as a landmark for navigation and contrast between short wave (UV and blue) and medium wave (green) radiation is used to screen the space. Selecting wavelength emission of the lighting systems could be possible to minimize insect attraction. In a two years long campaign we undertook insect collection tests using insect traps. We compared four lighting systems: high-pressure mercury bulb (Hg), high-pressure sodium bulb(Na) without and with UV filter (Hg_f; Na_f) and a lighting fixture with an insect trap without bulb as a control. The results of the test have shown that Hg lamp attracted an average of 70 insects by night, Na lamp 45, Hg_f 23, Na_f 16 ad Test lamp 8. The result confirm the proposed hypothesis and can be used in the elaboration of minimum impact lighting fixtures

UV Radiation as an Attractor for Insects

    No full text
Light pollution due to exterior lighting is a rising concern. While glare, light trespass and general light pollution have been well described, there are few reported studies on the impact of light pollution on insects. By studying insect behavior in relation to artificial lighting, we suggest that control of the UV component of artificial lighting can significantly reduce its attractiveness, offering a strong ability to control the impact on insects. Traditionally, the attractiveness of a lamp to insects is calculated using the luminous efficiency spectrum of insect rhodopsin. This has enabled the development of lamps that emit radiation with wavelengths that are less visible to insects (that is, yellow lamps). We tested the assumption that the degree of visibility of a lamp to insects can predict its attractiveness by means of experimental collections. We found that the expected lamp's visibility is indeed related to the extent to which it attracts insects. However, the number of insects attracted to a lamp is disproportionally affected by the emission of ultraviolet radiation. UV triggers the behavior of approaching lights more or less independently of the amount of UV radiation emitted. Thus, even small amounts of UV should be controlled in order to develop bug-free lamps
