Effect of hypokinesia on blood microcirculation

    Get PDF
Blood microcirculation in the region of the scleral bulbar conjunctiva and the nail folds on the fingers and toes was studied in 18 practically healthy men during 182 day antiorthostatic hypokinesia and 30 day rehabilitation period. Marked changes in microcirculation in the sclera and feet and less evident changes on the hands was revealed. A complex of special prophylactic physical exercises had a distinctly favorable effect on circulation in the hands

Theory of double resonance magnetometers based on atomic alignment

    Get PDF
We present a theoretical study of the spectra produced by optical-radio-frequency double resonance devices, in which resonant linearly polarized light is used in the optical pumping and detection processes. We extend previous work by presenting algebraic results which are valid for atomic states with arbitrary angular momenta, arbitrary rf intensities, and arbitrary geometries. The only restriction made is the assumption of low light intensity. The results are discussed in view of their use in optical magnetometers

Probing photo-ionization: simulations of positive streamers in varying N2:O2 mixtures

    Get PDF
Photo-ionization is the accepted mechanism for the propagation of positive streamers in air though the parameters are not very well known; the efficiency of this mechanism largely depends on the presence of both nitrogen and oxygen. But experiments show that streamer propagation is amazingly robust against changes of the gas composition; even for pure nitrogen with impurity levels below 1 ppm streamers propagate essentially with the same velocity as in air, but their minimal diameter is smaller, and they branch more frequently. Additionally, they move more in a zigzag fashion and sometimes exhibit a feathery structure. In our simulations, we test the relative importance of photo-ionization and of the background ionization from pulsed repetitive discharges, in air as well as in nitrogen with 1 ppm O2 . We also test reasonable parameter changes of the photo-ionization model. We find that photo- ionization dominates streamer propagation in air for repetition frequencies of at least 1 kHz, while in nitrogen with 1 ppm O2 the effect of the repetition frequency has to be included above 1 Hz. Finally, we explain the feather-like structures around streamer channels that are observed in experiments in nitrogen with high purity, but not in air.Comment: 12 figure

Geological-morphological description of the Ishtar Terra (photomap of the Venusian surface sheet B-5)

The main part of the Ishtar Terra east of the Maxwell Montes is covered with systems of areal dislocations of several directions, which are called Parquet. According to the structural patterns these may be divided into: (1) the central stable block; (2) the lesser peripheral blocks separated from the central one by gaps and grabens; (3) the zones of mobilized parquet, whose substance flowed downward at an incline in the directions away from the central block in the form of plastic flows; and (4) the partially parqueted lava sheets. The Maxwell Montes were formed as a result of the collision between the central parquet block and the Lakshmi Planum

Highly relativistic spinning particle starting near rph()r_{ph}^{(-)} in a Kerr field

Using the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon (MPD) equations, we investigate the trajectories of a spinning particle starting near rph()r_{ph}^{(-)} in a Kerr field and moving with the velocity close to the velocity of light (rph()r_{ph}^{(-)} is the Boyer-Lindquist radial coordinate of the counter-rotation circular photon orbits). First, as a partial case of these trajectories, we consider the equatorial circular orbit with r=rph()r=r_{ph}^{(-)}. This orbit is described by the solution that is common for the rigorous MPD equations and their linear spin approximation. Then different cases of the nonequatorial motions are computed and illustrated by the typical figures. All these orbits exhibit the effects of the significant gravitational repulsion that are caused by the spin-gravity interaction. Possible applications in astrophysics are discussed.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figure

Sub-Doppler spectroscopy of Rb atoms in a sub-micron vapor cell in the presence of a magnetic field

We report the first use of an extremely thin vapor cell (thickness ~ 400 nm) to study the magnetic-field dependence of laser-induced-fluorescence excitation spectra of alkali atoms. This thin cell allows for sub-Doppler resolution without the complexity of atomic beam or laser cooling techniques. This technique is used to study the laser-induced-fluorescence excitation spectra of Rb in a 50 G magnetic field. At this field strength the electronic angular momentum J and nuclear angular momentum I are only partially decoupled. As a result of the mixing of wavefunctions of different hyperfine states, we observe a nonlinear Zeeman effect for each sublevel, a substantial modification of the transition probabilities between different magnetic sublevels, and the appearance of transitions that are strictly forbidden in the absence of the magnetic field. For the case of right- and left- handed circularly polarized laser excitation, the fluorescence spectra differs qualitatively. Well pronounced magnetic field induced circular dichroism is observed. These observations are explained with a standard approach that describes the partial decoupling of I and J states

New method for preparation of delivery systems of poorly soluble drugs on the basis of functionalized mesoporous MCM-41 nanoparticles

    Get PDF
MCM-41 silica with spherical morphology and small particle sizes (100 nm) was synthesized and modified by post-synthesis method with amino and/or carboxylic groups. Solid state reaction was applied for the first time for loading of poorly soluble drug mesalazine (5-aminosalicylic acid – 5-ASA). Thenon-loaded and drug loaded mesoporous silicas were characterized by XRD, TEM, N2 physisorption, elemental analysis, thermal analysis, FT-IR and solid state NMR spectroscopy. Quantum-chemical calculations were used to predict the interactions between the drug molecule and the functional groups of the carrier. The nanoparticles were post-coated with sodium alginate and the coating modified the rate of mesalazine release from MCM-41NH2 and MCM-41NH2COOH particles. Cytotoxic evaluation on colon adenocarcinoma cell line revealed that the alginate coating reduced cytotoxicity of mesalazine loaded in the post-coated particles compared to the pure mesalazine. The functionalized, polymer coated mesoporous systems are suitable oral drug delivery systems providing an opportunity to modify drug release

Fragmentation channels of relativistic 7^7Be nuclei in peripheral interactions

Nuclei of 7^7Li were accelerated at the JINR Nuclotron. After the charge-exchange reaction involving these nuclei at an external target a second 7^7Be beam of energy 1.23A GeV was formed. This beam was used to expose photo-emulsion chambers. The mean free path for inelastic 7^7Be interactions in emulsion λ\lambda=14.0±\pm0.8 cm coincides within the errors with those for 6^6Li and 7^7Li nuclei. More than 10% of the 7^7Be events are associated with the peripheral interactions in which the total charge of the relativistic fragments is equal to the charge of the 7^7Be and in which charged mesons are not produced. An unusual ratio of the isotopes is revealed in the composition of the doubly charged 7^7Be fragments: the number of 3^3He fragments is twice as large as that of 4^4He fragments. In 50% of peripheral interactions, a 7^7Be nucleus decays to two doubly charged fragments. The present paper gives the channels of the 7^7Be fragmentation to charged fragments. In 50% of events, the 7^7Be fragmentation proceeds only to charged fragments involving no emission of neutrons. Of them, the 3^3He+4^4He channel dominates, the 4^4He+d+p and 6^6Li+pchannels constitute 10% each. Two events involving no emission of neutrons are registered in the 3-body 3^3He+t+p and 3^3He+d+d channels. The mean free path for the coherent dissociation of relativistic 7^7Be nuclei to 3^3He+4^4He is 7±\pm1 m. The particular features of the relativistic 7^7Be fragmentation in such peripheral interactions are explained by the 3^3He+4^4He 2-cluster structure of the 7^7Be nucleus.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables, conference: Conference on Physics of Fundamental Interactions, Moscow, Russia, 5-9 Dec 200
