There were conducted studies concerning accumulation of heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Cd and Pb) in Betula pendula Roth. leaves, in surface soil within cities of Silesian and Małopolska District. Additionally, there was studied guaiacol peroxidase activity and content of -SH groups. Concentrations of heavy metals in birch leaves in most cases did not exceed permissible values. There was noticed an increased Zn content (above 100 mg/kg d.m.) in Betula pendula Roth. leaves on the all studied stands of Silesia. Accumulation of Fe, Zn, Cd and Pb in soils of the Silesian cities often exceeded the permissible level. The conducted studies showed that there is a positive correlation between Zn accumulation in white birch leaves and its accumulation in surface soil. There were not noticed significant differences in content of non-protein -SH groups and guaiacol peroxidase activity in Betula pendula ROTH. leaves coming from Silesia and Małopolska District

Rab32 connects ER stress to mitochondrial defects in multiple sclerosis.

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is a hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS). However, this physiological mechanism has multiple manifestations that range from impaired clearance of unfolded proteins to altered mitochondrial dynamics and apoptosis. While connections between the triggering of the unfolded protein response (UPR) and downstream mitochondrial dysfunction are poorly understood, the membranous contacts between the ER and mitochondria, called the mitochondria-associated membrane (MAM), could provide a functional link between these two mechanisms. Therefore, we investigated whether the guanosine triphosphatase (GTPase) Rab32, a known regulator of the MAM, mitochondrial dynamics, and apoptosis, could be associated with ER stress as well as mitochondrial dysfunction. This article is freely available via Open Access. Komercjalizacja tacierzyństwa. Relacja ojca z dzieckiem na tle działań marketingowych

No full text
The last decades brought us dynamic changes in patterns of fatherhood. It is related both to expectations toward men, and their daily functioning itself. However, the role of a father is less often commercialized than the role of a mother. In line with that, commercials and marketing activities are less often addressed to fathers than to mothers. This paper is addressed to the potential grounds of this state of affairs, and the description of the new phenomenon – dadvertising. The possible manners of profiling marketing activities including fathers as primary recipients will be presented and discussed concerning findings of studies from the field of family psychology, sociology of the family, and a few existing studies aimed at commercials addressed to fathers. The abovementioned issues will be illustrated by examples of single commercials and marketing campaigns, in which protagonists or recipients were fathers.</jats:p

Polska wersja kwestionariusza do badania świadomości tożsamości narracyjnej

Artykuł jest sprawozdaniem prac nad polską adaptacją kwestionariusza do badania świadomości tożsamości narracyjnej (Awareness of Narrative Identity Questionnaire, ANIQ).

Stress induced subcellular distribution of ALG-2, RBM22 and hSlu7

AbstractALG-2 is a highly conserved calcium binding protein in the cytoplasm which belongs to the family of penta-EF hand proteins. Recently, we showed that ALG-2 is interacting with RBM22, a highly conserved spliceosomal nuclear protein (Montaville et al. Biochim. Biophys. Acta 1763, 1335, 2006; Krebs, Biochim. Biophys. Acta 1793, 979, 2009). In NIH 3T3 cells expressing both proteins a significant amount of ALG-2mRFP is translocated to the nucleus due to the interaction with RBM22-EGFP. hSlu7, another spliceosomal nuclear protein, known to interact with RBM22 in yeast, has been shown to translocate to the cytoplasm under cellular stress conditions. Here we provide evidence that the 2 spliceosomal proteins differ significantly in their subcellular distributions under stress conditions, and that RBM22 enhances the cytoplasmic translocation of hSlu7 under stress, especially a stress induced by thapsigargin. On the other hand, in NIH 3T3 cells expressing RBM22-EGFP and ALG-2-mRFP, ALG-2 remains translocated into the nucleus under both stress conditions, i.e. heat shock or treatment with thapsigargin. We could further demonstrate that these stress conditions had a different influence on the splicing pattern of XBP-1, a marker for the unfolded protein response indicating that ER stress may play a role in stress-induced translocation of spliceosomal proteins. Beta Blockers with Statins May Decrease All-Cause Mortality in Patients with Cardiovascular Diseases and Locally Advanced Unresectable Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer after Chemoradiotherapy

No full text
The study was conducted in the era when maintenance immunotherapy with durvalumab was not available in clinical practice after chemoradiotherapy (CRT) in unresectable non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The main aim of the study was to check whether the presence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and their pharmacotherapy affects the overall survival (OS) in such NSCLC patients undergoing sequential CRT. The group of 196 patients were analyzed: 101 patients with CVD (51.53%) and 95 patients with other reasons of qualification for sequential CRT (decreased performance status, older age, and other non-cardiovascular co-morbidities). Although patients with CVD were more often in older age, and they more often experienced cardiac and nephrological complications (p < 0.05 for all), there was a statistically nonsignificant trend for lower all-cause mortality in patients with CVD. The lowest all-cause mortality was observed in patients treated with beta-blockers and statins after two (HR = 0.31; 95%CI: 0.1–0.98; p = 0.047), three (HR = 0.33; 95%CI: 0.13–0.81; p = 0.015) and even four (HR = 0.45; 95%CI: 0.22–0.97; p = 0.027) years of follow-up. The benefit in OS remained significant in 101 patients with CVD treated with beta-blockers (HR = 0.65; 95%CI: 0.43–0.99; p = 0.045), and eventually statin, throughout the whole follow-up (log-rank p < 0.05). Further prospective studies are necessary to confirm the role of beta-blockers and statins in reduction of mortality in NSCLC patients undergoing radical CRT.</jats:p
