Psychiatric Disorders and Labor Market Outcomes: Evidence from the National Latino and Asian American Study
This paper investigates to what extent psychiatric disorders and mental distress affect labor market outcomes among ethnic minorities of Latino and Asian descent, most of whom are immigrants. Using data from the National Latino and Asian American Study, we examine the labor market effects of meeting diagnostic criteria for any psychiatric disorder in the past 12 months as well as the effects of psychiatric distress in the past year. Among Latinos, psychiatric disorders and mental distress are associated with detrimental effects on employment and absenteeism, similar to effects found in previous analyses of mostly white, American born populations. Among Asians, we find mixed evidence that psychiatric disorders and mental distress detract from labor market outcomes.
Coping With Racism: Moderators of the Discrimination-Adjustment Link Among Mexican-Origin Adolescents
What strategies help ethnic minority adolescents to cope with racism? The present study addressed this question by testing the role of ethnic identity, social support, and anger expression and suppression as moderators of the discrimination-adjustment link among 269 Mexican-origin adolescents (Mage = 14.1 years), 12-17 years old from the Midwestern U.S. Results from multilevel moderation analyses indicated that ethnic identity, social support, and anger suppression, respectively, significantly attenuated the relations between discrimination and adjustment problems, whereas outward anger expression exacerbated these relations. Moderation effects differed according to the level of analysis. By identifying effective coping strategies in the discrimination-adjustment link at specific levels of analysis, the present findings can guide future intervention efforts for Latino youth
Disparities in Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Mental Health Services in the U.S.
This is one of a series of five papers outlining the particular domains and dimensions of inequality where new research may yield a better understanding of responses to this growing issue.Mental health is recognized as a central determinant of individual well-being, family relationships, and engagement in society, yet there are considerable variations in mental health and mental health care according to race and ethnicity among youth in the U.S.In their report, Margarita Alegría and colleagues investigate disparities in mental health and mental health services for minority youth. Taking a developmental perspective, the authors explore four areas that may give rise to inequalities in mental health outcomes, highlight specific protective factors and barriers to care, and, finally, outline an agenda for future research
Transnational ties and past-year major depressive episodes among Latino immigrants
Latino immigrants live in an increasingly global world in which maintaining contact with kin in the home country is easier than ever. We examined (a) the annual distribution of remittances burden (percentage of remittances/household income) and visits to the home country, (b) the association of these transnational ties with a past-year major depressive episode (MDE), and (c) moderation by Latino subethnicity or gender. We conducted weighted logistic regression analyses with the Latino immigrant subsample (N = 1,614) of the National Latino and Asian American Study. Mexican and Other Latino immigrants had greater remittances burden than Puerto Rican migrants. Cuban immigrants made the fewest visits back home. After adjustment for sociodemographics and premigration psychiatric history, remittances burden decreased odds of MDE (odds ratio [OR] = 0.80, 95% confidence interval [CI] [0.67, .0.98]), whereas visits back home increased odds of MDE (OR = 1.04, 95% CI [1.01, 1.06]). Latino subethnicity was not a significant moderator. Visits back home were more strongly linked to depression among women than men. The distribution of transnational ties differs by Latino subgroup, although its association with depression is similar across groups. Monetary giving through remittances might promote a greater sense of self-efficacy, and caregiving for relatives back home that positively affect mental health. Visits back home, especially for women, might signal social stress from strained relationships with kin, spouses, or children left behind, or increased caregiving demands that negatively affect mental health. Clinical practice with immigrants should routinely assess the social resources and strains that fall outside national borders
Psychiatric Disorders and Labor Market Outcomes: Evidence from the National Comorbidity Survey - Replication
This paper uses the National Comorbidity Survey – Replication to estimate the effects of recent psychiatric disorder on employment, hours worked, and earnings. We employ methods proposed in Altonji, Elder and Taber (2005) which use selection on observable traits to provide information regarding selection along unobservable factors. Among males, disorder is associated with reductions of 13-17 percentage points in labor force participation and employment, depending on the sample and the model. Among females, we find smaller, less consistent associations between disorder and labor force participation and employment. There are no effects of disorder on earnings or hours worked among employed individuals.

Statistics Can Lie but Can also Correct for Lies: Reducing Response Bias in NLAAS via Bayesian Imputation
The National Latino and Asian American Study (NLAAS) is a large scale survey of psychiatric epidemiology, the most comprehensive survey of this kind. A unique feature of NLAAS is its embedded experiment for estimating the effect of alternative orderings of interview questions. The findings from the experiment are not completely unexpected, but nevertheless alarming. Compared to the survey results from the widely used traditional ordering, the self-reported psychiatric service-use rates are often doubled or even tripled under a more sensible ordering introduced by NLAAS. These findings explain certain perplexing empirical findings in literature, but at the same time impose some grand challenges. For example, how can one assess racial disparities when different races were surveyed with different survey instruments that are now known to induce substantial differences? The project documented in this paper is part of an effort to address these questions. It creates models for imputing the original responses had the respondents under the traditional survey not taken advantage of the skip patterns to reduce interview time, which resulted in increased rates of incorrect negative responses over the course of the interview. The imputation modeling task is particularly challenging because of the complexity of the questionnaire, the small sample sizes for subgroups of interests, and the need for providing sensible imputation to whatever sub-population that a future user might be interested in studying. As a case study, we report both our findings and frustrations in our quest for dealing with these common real-life complications.Statistic

Street-Based Female Adolescent Puerto Rican Sex Workers: Contextual Issues and Health Needs
Adolescent sex workers potentially have many health needs but are included rarely in health assessments; therefore, little is known about their needs or how to reach them. This study examines the motivations, social context, and health needs of street-based adolescent sex workers. The results show these youths are more likely to experience negative health outcomes, such as unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections, when they are using drugs or are depressed. These findings suggest the need for comprehensive programming to include individual, interpersonal, and greater environmental interventions. Examples for reaching adolescent sex workers are discussed
