Relations between convergence rates in Schatten p-norms
In quantum estimation theory and quantum tomography, the quantum state
obtained by sampling converges to the `true' unknown density matrix under
topologies that are different from the natural notion of distance in the space
of quantum states, i.e. the trace class norm. In this paper, we address such
problem, finding relations between the rates of convergence in the Schatten
-norms and in the trace class norm
Quantum Homodyne Tomography as an Informationally Complete Positive Operator Valued Measure
We define a positive operator valued measure on
describing the measurement of randomly sampled quadratures in quantum homodyne
tomography, and we study its probabilistic properties. Moreover, we give a
mathematical analysis of the relation between the description of a state in
terms of and the description provided by its Wigner transform.Comment: 9 page
Vibrational spectrum of solid picene (C_22H_14)
Recently, Mitsuhashi et al., have observed superconductivity with transition
temperature up to 18 K in potassium doped picene (C22H14), a polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbon compound [Nature 464 (2010) 76]. Theoretical analysis
indicate the importance of electron-phonon coupling in the superconducting
mechanisms of these systems, with different emphasis on inter- and
intra-molecular vibrations, depending on the approximations used. Here we
present a combined experimental and ab-initio study of the Raman and infrared
spectrum of undoped solid picene, which allows us to unanbiguously assign the
vibrational modes. This combined study enables the identification of the modes
which couple strongly to electrons and hence can play an important role in the
superconducting properties of the doped samples
The Expression of CD154 by Kaposi's Sarcoma Cells Mediates the Anti-Apoptotic and Migratory Effects of HIV-1-Tat Protein:
Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a malignancy associated to conditions of immune system impairment such as HIV-1 infection and post-transplantation therapy. Here we report that HIV-1-Tat protein, at concentrations well below those detected in AIDS patients, up-regulates the expression of both CD40 and CD154 on KS cells. This occurred also in the presence of vincristine, that at doses shown to induce apoptosis decreased the expression of both CD40 and CD154 on KS cells. The treatment with a soluble CD40-muIg fusion protein (CD40 fp) that prevents the binding of CD154 with cell surface CD40, as well as the transfection with a vector for soluble CD40 (KS sCD40), decreased the anti-apoptotic effect of Tat. Moreover, Tat-induced motility of KS cells was inhibited by soluble CD40 fp. Tat also enhanced the expression of intracellular proteins known to transduce signals triggered by CD40 engagement, in particular TRAF-3. Tat as well as soluble CD154 (sCD154) prevented vincristine-induced reduction of TRAF-3 in KS cells t..
Unified Aspect Search Algorithm
Man does the studying of systems by modelling it. Examining parameters which are describing the operation of the system is important when creating the model. The parameters required for the test are retained and the irrelevant parameters are discarded. The remainder of the model determines the aspect system of the examination. The system can be tested according to many of the disciplines. These aspect systems are not uniform. For this reason, the product of the examinations by different disciplines is difficult to compare. Placing examination on uniform basis could provide common foundation for a single modelling process. In this paper an aspect search algorithm is created which is based on the philosophical topics. All disciplines can be derived from philosophy. Because of these examinations based on philosophy can be uniform. The results of the tests are comparable. The requirements for the examination can be standardized. In addition, this method makes easier to adapt the operation. For example, the operating principles of energetic, mechanical, IT and social organizations can be adapted to each other
Argflow: a toolkit for deep argumentative explanations for neural networks
In recent years, machine learning (ML) models have been successfully applied in a variety of real-world applications. However, they are often complex and incomprehensible to human users. This can decrease trust in their outputs and render their usage in critical settings ethically problematic. As a result, several methods for explaining such ML models have been proposed recently, in particular for black-box models such as deep neural networks (NNs). Nevertheless, these methods predominantly explain outputs in terms of inputs, disregarding the inner workings of the ML model computing those outputs. We present Argflow, a toolkit enabling the generation of a variety of ‘deep’ argumentative explanations (DAXs) for outputs of NNs on classification tasks
The chemopreventive polyphenol Curcumin prevents hematogenous breast cancer metastases in immunodeficient mice
Dissemination of metastatic cells probably occurs long before diagnosis of the primary tumor. Metastasis during early phases of carcinogenesis in high risk patients is therefore a potential prevention target. The plant polyphenol Curcumin has been proposed for dietary prevention of cancer. We therefore examined its effects on the human breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 in vitro and in a mouse metastasis model. Curcumin strongly induces apoptosis in MDA- MB- 231 cells in correlation with reduced activation of the survival pathway NF kappa B, as a consequence of diminished I kappa B and p65 phosphorylation. Curcumin also reduces the expression of major matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) due to reduced NF kappa B activity and transcriptional downregulation of AP-1. NF kappa B/p65 silencing is sufficient to downregulate c-jun and MMP expression. Reduced NF kappa B/AP-1 activity and MMP expression lead to diminished invasion through a reconstituted basement membrane and to a significantly lower number of lung metastases in immunodeficient mice after intercardiac injection of 231 cells (p=0.0035). 68% of Curcumin treated but only 17% of untreated animals showed no or very few lung metastases, most likely as a consequence of down-regulation of NF kappa B/AP-1 dependent MMP expression and direct apoptotic effects on circulating tumor cells but not on established metastases. Dietary chemoprevention of metastases appears therefore feasible. Copyright (c) 2007 S. Karger AG, Basel
Cell delivery of Met docking site peptides inhibit angiogenesis and vascular tumor growth
Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and its receptor Met are responsible for a wide variety of cellular responses, both physiologically during embryo development and tissue homeostasis, and pathologically, particularly during tumor growth and dissemination. In cancer, Met can act as an oncogene on tumor cells, as well as a pro-angiogenic factor activating endothelial cells and inducing new vessel formation. Molecules interfering with Met activity could be valuable therapeutic agents. Here we have investigated the antiangiogenic properties of a synthetic peptide mimicking the docking site of the Met carboxyl-terminal tail, which was delivered into the cells by fusion with the internalization sequences from Antennapedia or HIV-Tat. We showed that these peptides inhibit ligand-dependent endothelial cell proliferation, motility, invasiveness and morphogenesis in vitro to an even greater extent and with much less toxicity than the Met inhibitor PHA-665752, which correlated with interference of HGF-dependent downstream signaling. In vivo, the peptides inhibited HGF-induced angiogenesis in the matrigel sponge assay and impaired xenograft tumor growth and vascularization in Kaposi's sarcoma. These data show that interference with the Met receptor intracellular sequence impairs HGF-induced angiogenesis, suggesting the use of antidocking site compounds as a therapeutic strategy to counteract angiogenesis in cancer as well as in other diseases
