The Apparent Madness of Crowds: Irrational collective behavior emerging from interactions among rational agents

    Get PDF
Standard economic theory assumes that agents in markets behave rationally. However, the observation of extremely large fluctuations in the price of financial assets that are not correlated to changes in their fundamental value, as well as the extreme instance of financial bubbles and crashes, imply that markets (at least occasionally) do display irrational behavior. In this paper, we briefly outline our recent work demonstrating that a market with interacting agents having bounded rationality can display price fluctuations that are {\em quantitatively} similar to those seen in real markets.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, to appear in Proceedings of International Workshop on "Econophysics of Stock Markets and Minority Games" (Econophys-Kolkata II), Feb 14-17, 200

Combined Attention-Based Fusion of Multiscale MRI Medical Images for Improving Early Brain Tumor Detection

    Get PDF
The effective diagnosis of early-stage brain tumors relies heavily on the analysis of multimodal medical images. To address this need, we propose a novel multimodal medical image fusion approach that utilizes convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for enhanced feature extraction and representation. Unlike conventional CNN-based fusion methods that employ straightforward weighted averaging, our method incorporates a "Multiscale Attention Fusion Module" and a "Visual Relevance Fusion Strategy" to refine the fusion process. Our methodology aims to effectively combine multiple MRI modalities while emphasizing the most crucial diagnostic information, thereby mitigating the issue of non-essential information that often degrades the quality of fused images. By integrating these innovative components, our research contributes to improved early brain tumor detection, ultimately enhancing the quality and efficiency of medical diagnoses

A note on a gauge-gravity relation and functional determinants

    Get PDF
We present a refinement of a recently found gauge-gravity relation between one-loop effective actions: on the gauge side, for a massive charged scalar in 2d dimensions in a constant maximally symmetric electromagnetic field; on the gravity side, for a massive spinor in d-dimensional (Euclidean) anti-de Sitter space. The inclusion of the dimensionally regularized volume of AdS leads to complete mapping within dimensional regularization. In even-dimensional AdS, we get a small correction to the original proposal; whereas in odd-dimensional AdS, the mapping is totally new and subtle, with the `holographic trace anomaly' playing a crucial role.Comment: 6 pages, io

Inverse problem by Cauchy data on arbitrary subboundary for system of elliptic equations

We consider an inverse problem of determining coefficient matrices in an NN-system of second-order elliptic equations in a bounded two dimensional domain by a set of Cauchy data on arbitrary subboundary. The main result of the article is as follows: If two systems of elliptic operators generate the same set of partial Cauchy data on an arbitrary subboundary, then the coefficient matrices of the first-order and zero-order terms satisfy the prescribed system of first-order partial differential equations. The main result implies the uniqueness of any two coefficient matrices provided that the one remaining matrix among the three coefficient matrices is known

A Study on Awareness of Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY ) among ANC registered women in Karimganj District

ackground and objectives :    Janani Suraksha Yojana has been a safe motherhood intervention and modified alternative of the National Maternity Benefit Scheme (NMBS). It ensures quality maternal care during pregnancy, delivery and in the immediate post delivery period  along with appropriate referral and transport assistance. It provides three pregnancy related benefits i.e. antenatal care , institutional delivery and post natal care to prevent maternal deaths and pregnancy related complications in women and at the same time ensure the well -being of the mother and the new born . The present study was carried out in Karimganj district to assess the awareness about Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) among ANC registered women.Setting & design: It was a descriptive study. Methods: Multi Stage Sampling was employed in the selection of the samples. The number of JSY beneficiaries who received at least 1 ANC checkup in each block was considered as ‘strata’ and proportionately the samples were selected from each Block of 7 Blocks of the district. Thus, the total number of samples collected were 373 from 36 villages. However, the representation of the samples was emphasized on the Blocks. Results:  Of the 373 mothers interviewed, (29.22%) were aware about the Janani Suraksha Yojana to some extent. Most respondents (53.6%) have received ANC more than 3 times. A vast majority of the respondents (95.2%) have learnt about the JSY through ASHA. More than half of the respondents have awareness about maternal health. Half of the respondents knew that there exists a programme for pregnant women for safe institutional selivery. A vast majority of the respondents (85.3%) have delivery of the last children at institutions. A majority of the respondents have received financial assistance under JSY. A larger majority of the respondents (84.2%) are advised by ASHA about child immunization. Of the 373 respondents, 231 (61.9%) of them are aware about the postnatal care. Many respondents (51.5%) have consumed 50-100 iron and folic tablets during the last pregnancy. Conclusion :  JSY have a positive outcome for  the improvement of reproductive health because it  integrates three pregnancy related benefits i.e. antenatal care, institutionalized delivery, and  postpartum care. JSY services are significantly increasing the use of antenatal care services and institutional delivery which is one of the main objective of JSY

A local families index formula for d-bar operators on punctured Riemann surfaces

Using heat kernel methods developed by Vaillant, a local index formula is obtained for families of d-bar operators on the Teichmuller universal curve of Riemann surfaces of genus g with n punctures. The formula also holds on the moduli space M{g,n} in the sense of orbifolds where it can be written in terms of Mumford-Morita-Miller classes. The degree two part of the formula gives the curvature of the corresponding determinant line bundle equipped with the Quillen connection, a result originally obtained by Takhtajan and Zograf.Comment: 47 page
