Monitoring a trans-border labour market in view of liberalization - the case of Ticino.

Switzerland has signed a treaty with the EU on free mobility. Beginning from the month of June 2004, this will replace the actual regulation based on quotas of foreign labor force and will facilitate the entrance of the Italian enterprises in the Ticino market. The evidence found when monitoring the Ticino economy for the period 1980 to 2002, is that the opening of the market has largely been anticipated and the regional economies, north and south of the border, seem to be converging at least from about two decades. The liberalization of the labor market will therefore accelerate an integration process already in action. This paper presents evidence on this process, based on the characteristics of the trans-border labor market (wage differentials, mobility, skills) and indicators on both supply and demand side of this specific regional market.

Dark septate root endophytic fungi increase growth of Scots pine seedlings under elevated CO2 through enhanced nitrogen use efficiency.

Although increasing concentrations of atmospheric CO2 are predicted to have substantial impacts on plant growth and functioning of ecosystems, there is insufficient understanding of the responses of belowground processes to such increases. We investigated the effects of different dark septate root endophytic (DSE) fungi on growth and nutrient acquisition by Pinus sylvestris seedlings under conditions of N limitation and at ambient and elevated CO2 (350 or 700 µ1 CO2 l-1). Each seedling was inoculated with one of the following species: Phialocephala fortinii (two strains), Cadophora finlandica, Chloridium paucisporum, Scytalidium vaccinii, Meliniomyces variabilis and M. vraolstadiae. The trial lasted 125 days. During the final 27 days, the seedlings were labeled with 14CO2 and 15NH4+. We measured extraradical hyphal length, internal colonization, plant biomass, 14C allocation, and plant N and 15N content. Under elevated CO2, the biomass of seedlings inoculated with DSE fungi was on average 17% higher than in control seedlings. Simultaneously, below-ground respiration doubled or trebled, and as a consequence carbon use efficiency by the DSE fungi significantly decreased. Shoot N concentration decreased on average by 57% under elevated CO2 and was lowest in seedlings inoculated with S. vaccinii. Carbon gain by the seedlings despite reduced shoot N concentration indicates that DSE fungi increase plant nutrient use efficiency and are therefore more beneficial to the plant under elevated CO

Fate of the one-dimensional Ising quantum critical point coupled to a gapless boson

The problem of a quantum Ising degree of freedom coupled to a gapless bosonic mode appears naturally in many one dimensional systems, yet surprisingly little is known how such a coupling affects the Ising quantum critical point. We investigate the fate of the critical point in a regime, where the weak coupling renormalization group (RG) indicates a flow toward strong coupling. Using a renormalization group analysis and numerical density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations we show that, depending on the ratio of velocities of the gapless bosonic mode and the Ising critical fluctuations, the transition may remain continuous or become fluctuation-driven first order. The two regimes are separated by a tri-critical point of a novel type.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures; published versio

Monografia apresentada à Diretoria de Pós-graduação da Universidade do Extremo Sul Catarinense - UNESC, para a obtenção do título de especialista em Língua Inglesa. The present study contains a general analysis of the stress patterns of English words. This work tried to focus in the difficulties Brazilian English students have to use English stress patterns correctly. The difficulties were studied based on bibliographic data and a test administered to fluent English students from an English school which follows the communicative methodology. Both the test results and the author’s ideas used in this study showed that Brazilian students of English really face difficulties to apply the English stress patterns in speech. Also, this study contributes with some pedagogical ideas to reinforce the teaching of stress patterns in class in order to provide students of English with a great amount of input about the issue. This work tries to demonstrate the importance and the utility of correct use of stress patterns in a communicative context and shows some misunderstandings caused because of wrong use of word stress
