There are few papers on Jerusalem artichoke postharvest storage and quality changes. This research aimed to achieve information about: a) the influence of harvest dates and varieties on tuber s quality; b) the evolution of each treatment in cold storage; and c) the conservation periods and places (cold storage-field) effects on tubers quality was studied. Two varieties of Jerusalem artichoke were used, red tubers and white tubers. Dry matter; soluble solids; firmness; peridermis and pulp colour; sprouting and Penicillium development and fresh weight evolution of tubers were measured. It was found that the harvest period, to mantain the tuber quality and good performance in cold storage during the year, should not extend more than 49 days since the first frost for the study area (Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza, Latitude 33°00 30" S; Longitude 68°52 32" W). Differences between varieties were not observed. The information suggest that, for fresh consumption, tubers must be harvested till 98 days after the first frost, but these tubers are not kept properly refrigerated. Regarding method and time storage effects on tubersˈ quality, it is observed again that tubers which are keep in field beyond the second measurement date (August 30), quickly lose their commercial quality.Fil: Ibarguren, Leandra. Divergencies in the Casimir energy for a medium with realistic ultraviolet behavior

We consider a dielectric medium with an ultraviolet behavior as it follows from the Drude model. Compared with dilute models, this has the advantage that, for large frequencies, two different media behave the same way. As a result one expects the Casimir energy to contain less divergencies than for the dilute media approximation. We show that the Casimir energy of a spherical dielectric ball contains just one divergent term, a volume one, which can be renormalized by introducing a contact term analogous to the volume energy counterterm needed in bag models.Facultad de Ciencias ExactasInstituto de Física La Plat

One-year pulmonary impairment after severe COVID-19: a prospective, multicenter follow-up study

Background Long-term pulmonary sequelae following hospitalization for SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia is largely unclear. The aim of this study was to identify and characterise pulmonary sequelae caused by SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia at 12-month from discharge. Methods In this multicentre, prospective, observational study, patients hospitalised for SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia and without prior diagnosis of structural lung diseases were stratified by maximum ventilatory support ("oxygen only", "continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)" and "invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV)") and followed up at 12 months from discharge. Pulmonary function tests and diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO), 6 min walking test, high resolution CT (HRCT) scan, and modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) dyspnea scale were collected. Results Out of 287 patients hospitalized with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia and followed up at 1 year, DLCO impairment, mainly of mild entity and improved with respect to the 6-month follow-up, was observed more frequently in the "oxygen only" and "IMV" group (53% and 49% of patients, respectively), compared to 29% in the "CPAP" group. Abnormalities at chest HRCT were found in 46%, 65% and 80% of cases in the "oxygen only", "CPAP" and "IMV" group, respectively. Non-fibrotic interstitial lung abnormalities, in particular reticulations and ground-glass attenuation, were the main finding, while honeycombing was found only in 1% of cases. Older patients and those requiring IMV were at higher risk of developing radiological pulmonary sequelae. Dyspnea evaluated through mMRC scale was reported by 35% of patients with no differences between groups, compared to 29% at 6-month follow-up. Conclusion DLCO alteration and non-fibrotic interstitial lung abnormalities are common after 1 year from hospitalization due to SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia, particularly in older patients requiring higher ventilatory support. Studies with longer follow-ups are needed

Prevalence and risk factors of glomerular hyperfiltration in adults with type 2 diabetes: A population-based study

Aims: Glomerular hyperfiltration characterises the earliest stage of diabetic nephropathy and predicts adverse kidney and cardiovascular outcomes. We aimed to assess the prevalence and risk factors of glomerular hyperfiltration in a population-based contemporary cohort of individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Materials and methods: The prevalence of unequivocal glomerular hyperfiltration (defined by an estimated glomerular filtration rate >120 mL/min/1.73 m(2) ) and its associated risk factors were identified in a cohort of 202,068 adult patients with T2D receiving specialist care in 2021-2022, whose center-aggregated data were automatically extracted from electronic medical records of 75 diabetes clinics in Italy. Results: Glomerular hyperfiltration was identified in 1262 (0.6%) participants. The prevalence of glomerular hyperfiltration varied widely across centers (0%-3.4%) and correlated with mean center age, HbA(1c) , body mass index (BMI), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Patients in centers with high glomerular hyperfiltration prevalence (>0.8%) were more often men and had lower age and BMI, but more frequent albuminuria and worse glucose, lipid, and blood pressure control, compared with low-normal prevalence centers. Conclusions: Unequivocal glomerular hyperfiltration can be identified in up to 3.4% of patients receiving up-to-date specialist diabetes care. Glomerular hyperfiltration prevalence varies across centers and substantially increases with suboptimal control of metabolic risk factors, which would require improved management to mitigate the negative health consequences of this pathological condition

Early systemic insults following traumatic brain injury: association with biomarker profiles, therapy for intracranial hypertension, and neurological outcomes-an analysis of CENTER-TBI data

    Get PDF
Purpose: We analysed the impact of early systemic insults (hypoxemia and hypotension, SIs) on brain injury biomarker profiles, acute care requirements during intensive care unit (ICU) stay, and 6-month outcomes in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Methods: From patients recruited to the Collaborative European neurotrauma effectiveness research in TBI (CENTER-TBI) study, we documented the prevalence and risk factors for SIs and analysed their effect on the levels of brain injury biomarkers [S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B), neuron-specific enolase (NSE), neurofilament light (NfL), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCH-L1), and protein Tau], critical care needs, and 6-month outcomes [Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended (GOSE)]. Results: Among 1695 TBI patients, 24.5% had SIs: 16.1% had hypoxemia, 15.2% had hypotension, and 6.8% had both. Biomarkers differed by SI category, with higher S100B, Tau, UCH-L1, NSE and NfL values in patients with hypotension or both SIs. The ratio of neural to glial injury (quantified as UCH-L1/GFAP and Tau/GFAP ratios) was higher in patients with hypotension than in those with no SIs or hypoxia alone. At 6 months, 380 patients died (22%), and 759 (45%) had GOSE ≤ 4. Patients who experienced at least one SI had higher mortality than those who did not (31.8% vs. 19%, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Though less frequent than previously described, SIs in TBI patients are associated with higher release of neuronal than glial injury biomarkers and with increased requirements for ICU therapies aimed at reducing intracranial hypertension. Hypotension or combined SIs are significantly associated with adverse 6-month outcomes. Current criteria for hypotension may lead to higher biomarker levels and more negative outcomes than those for hypoxemia suggesting a need to revisit pressure targets in the prehospital settings.publishedVersio

Clinical Features, Cardiovascular Risk Profile, and Therapeutic Trajectories of Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Candidate for Oral Semaglutide Therapy in the Italian Specialist Care

    Get PDF
Introduction: This study aimed to address therapeutic inertia in the management of type 2 diabetes (T2D) by investigating the potential of early treatment with oral semaglutide. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between October 2021 and April 2022 among specialists treating individuals with T2D. A scientific committee designed a data collection form covering demographics, cardiovascular risk, glucose control metrics, ongoing therapies, and physician judgments on treatment appropriateness. Participants completed anonymous patient questionnaires reflecting routine clinical encounters. The preferred therapeutic regimen for each patient was also identified. Results: The analysis was conducted on 4449 patients initiating oral semaglutide. The population had a relatively short disease duration (42%  60% of patients, and more often than sitagliptin or empagliflozin. Conclusion: The study supports the potential of early implementation of oral semaglutide as a strategy to overcome therapeutic inertia and enhance T2D management
