    Are You An Emissary of Jesus Christ?: Justice, The Catholic Church and the Chicano Movement

    In 1969, Católicos Por La Raza (CPLR) emerged as an ethnic protest group against the injustices of the American Catholic Church in San Diego and Los Angeles, California. CPLR was critical of the Catholic hierarchy\u27s inconsistencies in relation to the Chicano community. As one of the wealthiest institutions, the Catholic Church was doing very little for a community that made up the largest part of the Church\u27s membership. For CPLR, the Christian message of justice was not practiced by the leaders of the Church. In Los Angeles, Chicanos were asking why the Archdiocese chose to close a high school in the barrio, due to lack of funds, but could still afford to build a three million dollar cathedral in downtown Los Angeles. In San Diego, Chicanos were asking the Catholic Church to become intimately involved in the everyday struggles of the Chicano community. Within this dialogue emerged a clear concept of justice and its meaning for CPLR members in relationship to the hierarchy of the American Catholic Church

    From the margins, we find ourselves well positioned to tell other stories -- life histories, traditions, and cultural myths which typically go unheard in dominant society.[2] As illustrated in the lead article, A Pattern of Possibility: Maxine Hong Kingston\u27s Woman Warrior, by Thelma J. Shinn, such stories are meronymic -- mero from the Greek meaning part -- because our unique social location allows us to see beyond the dominant mythos and tell other parts of the story. Telling these stories is not only empowering to those whom we name, but it also changes and transforms the official storyline itself. Life stories of marginalized peoples demonstrate time and again that there is no one story, no one way of seeing, thinking, or feeling. Moreover, the core of these stories and identities reveal multiple parts of a more inclusive story, a more inclusive way of thinking. Further, meronymic stories unveil the complex operations of power and domination which have denied and suppressed other voices. This special issue of Explorations in Ethnic Studies on race, class, and gender is devoted to telling the other parts of the story

    Given a smooth stacky Calabi-Yau hypersurface X in a weighted projective space, we consider the functor G which is the composition of the following two autoequivalences of D^b(X): the first one is induced by the spherical object O_X, while the second one is tensoring with O_X(1). The main result of the paper is that the composition of G with itself w times, where w is the sum of the weights of the weighted projective space, is isomorphic to the autoequivalence "shift by 2". The proof also involves the construction of a Beilinson type resolution of the diagonal for weighted projective spaces, viewed as smooth stacks.Comment: 19 pages; minor modifications; accepted by J.     Seed weight variation of wyoming sagebrush in Northern Nevada

    Seed size is a crucial plant trait that may potentially affect not only immediate seedling success but also the subsequent generation. We examined variation in seed weight of Wyoming sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis Beetle and Young), an excellent candidate species for rangeland restoration. The working hypothesis was that a major fraction of spatial and temporal variability in seed size (weight) of Wyoming sagebrush could be explained by variations in mean monthly temperatures and precipitation. Seed collection was conducted at Battle Mountain and Eden Valley sites in northern Nevada, USA, during November of 2002 and 2003. Frequency distributions of seed weight varied from leptokurtic to platykurtic, and from symmetry to skewness to the right for both sites and years. Mean seed weight varied by a factor of 1.4 between locations and years. Mean seed weight was greater (P0.05) in all study situations. Simple linear regression showed that monthly precipitation (March to November) explained 85% of the total variation in mean seed weight ( P=0.079). Since the relationship between mean monthly temperature (June-November) and mean seed weight was not significant (r2=0.00, P=0.431), this emphasizes the importance of precipitation as an important determinant of mean seed weight. Our results suggest that the precipitation regime to which the mother plant is exposed can have a significant effect on sizes of seeds produced.     The gravitational Vavilov-Cherenkov effect

    In this essay we show that an uncharged black-hole moving superluminally in a transparent dielectric medium violates Hawking's area theorem. The violation is overcome through the emission of radiation. Since modes cannot emerge from the black hole itself, this radiation must originate from a collective effect in the medium, in complete analogy with the Vavilov-Cherenkov effect. However, because the black-hole is uncharged, the emission mechanism must be different. We discuss the physical origin of the effect and obtain a Newtonian estimative. Then we obtain the appropriate equations in the relativistic case and show that the field which is radiated away is a combination of gravitational and electromagnetic degrees of freedom.     Maximum of N Independent Brownian Walkers till the First Exit From the Half Space

    We consider the one-dimensional target search process that involves an immobile target located at the origin and NN searchers performing independent Brownian motions starting at the initial positions x⃗=(x1,x2,...,xN)\vec x = (x_1,x_2,..., x_N) all on the positive half space. The process stops when the target is first found by one of the searchers. We compute the probability distribution of the maximum distance mm visited by the searchers till the stopping time and show that it has a power law tail: PN(m∣x⃗)∼BN(x1x2...xN)/mN+1P_N(m|\vec x)\sim B_N (x_1x_2... x_N)/m^{N+1} for large mm. Thus all moments of mm up to the order (N−1)(N-1) are finite, while the higher moments diverge. The prefactor BNB_N increases with NN faster than exponentially. Our solution gives the exit probability of a set of NN particles from a box [0,L][0,L] through the left boundary. Incidentally, it also provides an exact solution of the Laplace's equation in an NN-dimensional hypercube with some prescribed boundary conditions.
