Liberation through violence in Fanon's. The wretched of the earth: historical and contemporary criticisms
Fanon wrote The Wretched of the Earth in the face of the horror of the Algerian civil war and in the broader context
of anti-colonial liberation struggles in Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Such experiences had showed that violence
is necessary both to impose domination and to break free from it. It comes as no surprise, then, that Fanon puts his
faith in revolutionary violence. In dissent from some recent interpretations, this article argues that Fanon considered
physical violence a useful tool both to free people from the constraints of colonialism and to build a society free from
oppression. The article also discusses the limits of such a theory of violence: Beginning with Hannah Arendt's 1969
criticisms of Fanon's ideas, the article deals with some questions that Fanon failed or did not want to ask himself,
and that the peace studies scholars could benefit from considering carefully
The Disenchantment of History and the Tragic Consciousness of Chinese Postmodernity
Magic Realism brings fantastic events into the frame of the narration. Yet it cannot quite be defined. At the very start of the process of definition, there is a question: Magic Realism is a mode of narration, or rather a post-colonial movement rising sociological issues alternative to the logic of power? The paper parallels and juxtaposes Latin American Magic Realism and the literary experience of Chinese literary Avant-garde in the 80s, similar apocalyptic thematic, but different narrative structures. Relating to the fictional universe of Can Xue and Yu Hua, the aim is to illuminate an exclusive mode to narrate history: far from being a negotiation of identities in a post-Weberian age, Chinese Avant-garde represents the implosion of Maoist discourse, thus the magic of realism is substituted with the horrifying abyss of a haunted fiction

The new species Echinofabricia rousei is described for the Mediterranean Sea based on specimens collected along the Sardinia
Coast (Porto Conte). The genus Echinofabricia is reported for the first time in the Mediterranean area. At present three species
are described within the genus: E. goodhartzorum, described from the Caribbean, E. dubia, described from the East Pacific
(Hawaii) and E. alata from Australia

The pharmacological perturbation of brain zinc impairs BDNF-related signaling and the cognitive performances of young mice.
Zinc (Zn2+) is a pleiotropic modulator of the neuronal and brain activity. The disruption of intraneuronal Zn2+ levels triggers neurotoxic processes and affects neuronal functioning. In this study, we investigated how the pharmacological modulation of brain Zn2+ affects synaptic plasticity and cognition in wild-type mice. To manipulate brain Zn2+ levels, we employed the Zn2+ (and copper) chelator 5-chloro-7-iodo-8-hydroxyquinoline (clioquinol, CQ). CQ was administered for two weeks to 2.5-month-old (m.o.) mice, and effects studied on BDNF-related signaling, metalloproteinase activity as well as learning and memory performances. CQ treatment was found to negatively affect short- and long-term memory performances. The CQ-driven perturbation of brain Zn2+ was found to reduce levels of BDNF, synaptic plasticity-related proteins and dendritic spine density in vivo. Our study highlights the importance of choosing "when", "where", and "how much" in the modulation of brain Zn2+ levels. Our findings confirm the importance of targeting Zn2+ as a therapeutic approach against neurodegenerative conditions but, at the same time, underscore the potential drawbacks of reducing brain Zn2+ availability upon the early stages of development
A contribution to the phylogeography of Pinctada imbricata radiata (Leach, 1814) (Bivalvia: Pteriidae) from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea by means of the mitochondrial COI marker
Pinctada imbricata radiata (Leach, 1814) was the first Lessepsian bivalve reported in the Mediterranean Sea where it is progressively expanding westward. Its native range includes the Indian Ocean and western Atlantic. The present study provides the first insight into the species’ phylogeographic structure, by analysing sequences of a 385-bp region of the mitochondrial gene coding for the subunit I of the cytochrome c oxydase (COI). Sixty-four individuals collected at seven Mediterranean localities were sequenced; in addition, eight COI sequences of individuals from the species’ native range (Persian Gulf) were retrieved from GenBank. Overall, we detected 10 haplotypes. Samples from both the native range and invaded localities were characterised by low levels of haplotype and nucleotide diversity (total h = 0.351, total π = 0.0013). Significant genetic divergence was found between Persian Gulf and Mediterranean Sea samples, whereas very shallow genetic structuring was observed within the Mediterranean study area. Moreover, no pattern of isolation by distance was detected in the Mediterranean. From a historical demography perspective, our results on Mediterranean samples were consistent with a very recent, or even ongoing, demographic expansion. Range expansion of exotic thermophilic species in this area is a widely observed phenomenon that many authors have related to global warming
Rocky intertidal platforms at Asinara Island Marine Protected Area (Italy, Mediterranean Sea) were experimentally trampled to assess the impact of human visitation on polychaetes. Trampling at two different experimental intensities (60,120 steps/20x20 cm quadrat) and controls were applied at two locations (“no-entry, no-take” zones) of the MPA. One day after the experimental trampling, benthic samples were collected and the polychaetes counted and identified. Overall 1146 individuals were collected; Salvatoria clavata, Polyophthalmus pictus, Syllis prolifera, Amphiglena mediterranea, Fabricia stellaris, Platynereis dumerilii and Sphaerosyllis taylori were the most abundant species. Analyses of variance on all polychaetes and on each of the important polychaete species showed a significant higher abundance in controls than in trampled plots. Given the short-term decline in abundance, these results suggest that polychaetes are vulnerable even to the lowest experimental level of trampling.
