In Which Conditions is Conservative Tratment Likely to Fail in Humeral Shaft Fractures? A Retrospective Analysis of 67 Patients

    Get PDF
Aim:Humeral shaft fractures are one of the most common fractures of the upper extremity. Most humeral shaft fractures can be treated conservatively, but in some cases, surgical treatment is required. In this study, the characteristics of patients who needed surgical intervention due to unsuccessful conservative treatment and inability to achieve union were investigated.Materials and Methods:Data of 67 patients [female (n=41) and male (n=26)] in whom conservative treatment was initiated due to humeral shaft fracture were evaluated retrospectively. The data of the patients in whom treatment had to be switched to surgery during the follow-up period were analyzed. Age, gender, trauma type, fracture site and vitamin D levels on the day of the fracture were noted. Results:At the end of 54 (42-77) days, the treatment was switched to surgery due to nonunion in 14 patients. All of these patients were female, over the age of 60 years, and the humeral fractures in these patients were in the middle third of the humerus. The mean 25(OH) vitamin D [25(OH) D] level of these patients was 14 mg/dL (4-22 mg/dL).Conclusion:It is concluded that the conservative treatment is prone to fail if humeral shaft fracture is a proximal oblique or a mid-shaft one, if the patient is over the age of 60 years and female, and if 25(OH)D level of the patient is low

Investigation of the deposition and thermal behavior of striped phases of unsymmetric disulfide self-assembled monolayers on Au(111): The case of 11-hydroxyundecyl decyl disulfide

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of unsymmetric disulfides on Au(111) are used to form mixed SAMs that can be utilized in many applications. Here, we have studied 11-hydroxyundecyl decyl disulfide (CH3-(CH2)9-S-S-(CH2)11-OH, HDD) SAMs produced by supersonic molecular beam deposition and characterized by He diffraction. The film growth was monitored at different temperatures up to a coverage which corresponds to a full lying down phase and the diffraction analysis shows that below 250 K the phase is different from the phase measured above 300 K. During the annealing of the film, two phase transitions were observed, at 250 K and 350 K. The overall data suggest that the former is related to an irreversible phase separation of HDD above 250 K to decanethiolate (-S-(CH2)9-CH3, DTT) and hydroxyundecylthiolate (-S-(CH2)11-OH, MUDT), while the latter to a reversible melting of the film. Above 450 K, the specular intensity shows an increase related to film desorption and different chemisorbed states were observed with energies in the same range as observed for decanethiol (H-S-(CH2)9-CH3, DT) and mercaptoundecanol (H-S-(CH2)11-OH, MUD) SAMs

An application sample based on the stem approach with entrepreneurship: colors

In this research, Entrepreneurship and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) activity has been established to the gifted secondary school students and to show their applicability. Entrepreneurship and STEM will be shorthened as E-STEM. The activity of Colors was implemented at İnönü University Scientific and Technological Research Center (ISTRC) Laboratories and İnönü University Faculty of Fine Arts with gifted secondary school students. In the study, 14 gifted secondary school students were trained for a week based on the E- STEM approach. The students generated solutions to the problem statuses that were given to them using the components of science, technology, mathematics, engineering and entrepreneurship for a week. They developed products with a higher added-value by combining their imagination and creativity, and implemented studies to commercialize their products. The students designed their prototypes in three groups and then developed their designs by examining the dimensions of art and marketing. When examining the answers given by the students to open-ended questions in the activity evaluation form, it was determined that they thought that the E-STEM oriented activity developed their knowledge and skills in the areas of science, technology, mathematics, engineering, entrepreneurship and art

Study of the helium cross-section of unsymmetric disulfide self-assembled monolayers on Au(111)

We have investigated the formation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 11-hydroxyundecyl decyl disulfide (CH3-(CH2)9-S-S-(CH2)11-OH, HDD) and 11-hydroxyundecyl octadecyl disulfide (CH3-(CH2)17-S-S-(CH2)11-OH, HOD) produced by supersonic molecular beam deposition (SMBD). The study has been carried out by means of helium diffraction at very low film coverage. In this regime helium single molecule cross sections have been estimated in a temperature range between 100 K and 450 K. The results show a different behavior above 300 K that has been interpreted as the starting of mobility with the formation of two thiolate moieties either linked by a gold adatom or distant enough to prevent cross section overlapping. Finally, helium diffraction patterns measured at 80 K for the SAMs grown at 200 K are discussed and the results support the proposed hypothesis of molecular dissociation based on the cross section data

Very Short-Term Power System Frequency Forecasting

    Get PDF
Power system frequency plays a pivotal role in ensuring the security, adequacy, and integrity of a power system. While some frequency response services are automatically delivered to maintain the frequency within the stipulated limits, certain cases may require that system operators (SOs) manually intervene-against the clock-to take the necessary preventive or corrective actions. As such, SOs can be greatly aided by practical tools that afford them greater temporal leeway. To this end, we propose a methodology to forecast the power system frequency in the subsequent minute. We perform an extensive analysis so as to identify the factors that influence power system frequency. By effectively exploiting the identified factors, we develop a forecasting methodology that harnesses the long short-term memory model. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology on Great Britain transmission system frequency data using comparative assessments with selected benchmarks based on various evaluation metrics.Publisher's Versio
