Proceedings of: IEEE Symposium Series on Computational Intelligence (SSCI 2014). Orlando, FL, USA, December 09-12, 2014.This work describes a proposal for developing and testing a scalable machine learning architecture able to provide real-time predictions or analytics as a service over domain-independent big data, working on top of the Hadoop ecosystem and providing real-time analytics as a service through a RESTful API. Systems implementing this architecture could provide companies with on-demand tools facilitating the tasks of storing, analyzing, understanding and reacting to their data, either in batch or stream fashion; and could turn into a valuable asset for improving the business performance and be a key market differentiator in this fast pace environment. In order to validate the proposed architecture, two systems are developed, each one providing classical machine-learning services in different domains: the first one involves a recommender system for web advertising, while the second consists in a prediction system which learns from gamers' behavior and tries to predict future events such as purchases or churning. An evaluation is carried out on these systems, and results show how both services are able to provide fast responses even when a number of concurrent requests are made, and in the particular case of the second system, results clearly prove that computed predictions significantly outperform those obtained if random guess was used. This research work is part of Memento Data Analysis project, co-funded by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism with identifier TSI-020601-2012-99.Publicad

An Efficient and Scalable Recommender System for the Smart Web

This proceeding at: 11th International Conference on Innovations in Information Technology (IIT) Innovations 2015. Special Theme: Smart Cities, Big Data, Sustainable Development. Took place at 2015, November, 01 - 03, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (IEEE IIT 2015).This work describes the development of a web recommender system implementing both collaborative filtering and content-based filtering. Moreover, it supports two different working modes, either sponsored or related, depending on whether websites are to be recommended based on a list of ongoing ad campaigns or in the user preferences. Novel recommendation algorithms are proposed and implemented, which fully rely on set operations such as union and intersection in order to compute the set of recommendations to be provided to end users. The recommender system is deployed over a real-time big data architecture designed to work with Apache Hadoop ecosystem, thus supporting horizontal scalability, and is able to provide recommendations as a service by means of a RESTful API. The performance of the recommender is measured, resulting in the system being able to provide dozens of recommendations in few milliseconds in a single-node cluster setup. This research work is part of Memento Data Analysis project, co-funded by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism with no. Effects of empowering leadership under boundary conditions in the hospitality industry

This study tests the positive effects of empowering leadership (ELSH) under boundary conditions in the hospitality industry. We propose the existence of an interactive process through which ELSH behaviors interact with employees’ personality type to condition their engagement, which in turn influences their extra-role service behavior. We use data from 294 employees and structural equation modeling. The results show that the interaction of ELSH with employees’ independent and interdependent personality is negatively related to their engagement. This decrease in engagement is then reflected in decreased extra-role service behaviors due to the positive relationship between engagement and extra-role service. These findings suggest that self-construal is a significant boundary condition capable of changing the positive relationship between ELSH and engagement to a negative one. Not considering this relationship when establishing a leadership strategy such as ELSH in the hospitality context could render efforts to achieve the goal of high-quality service ineffective.European Regional Development Fund (European Union)Spanish Government ECO2017-84138-PJunta de Andalucia A-SEJ-154-UGR18University of Granada/CBU

Quién soy, qué conozco y a quién conozco: el uso de la lógica de efectuación por los emprendedores académicos

ABSTRACT The logic of effectuation argues that entrepreneurs create their businesses through a process of repeated action that is creative and unplanned, utterly contrary to causal logic or to the rational process put forward in the literature on entrepreneurship. In this study we focus on the use of effectual logic by academic entrepreneurs, i.e, university teachers or researchers who have founded a (research-knowledge based) university spin-off. Our research aims to analyze whether academic entrepreneurs engage in effectual behaviors in the process of creation and development of spinoffs. We analyze 16 cases of academic entrepreneurs from Spanish universities to obtain evidence of their effectual behavior. This study contributes to achieve a greater comprehension about how academic entrepreneurs transform their knowledge, experience, and the resources available in entrepreneurial opportunities. It also helps us better understand how different factors in the university context influence the practice of effectuation. Public Support and Inter-firm Collaborations in Women-Owned Firms

This study goes beyond the descriptive analyses of women entrepreneur’s networks, and advances the idea of interdependency between the different types of relationships they build. It emphasizes that developing ties with support institutions can reinforce and legitimate them in the interactions with peers organisations. The results of the research on a sample of Spanish women-owned business reveal that as the level of support obtained through the relationships with public entities increases, the average social interaction with clients and collaborators and the quality of relationships with collaborators increases. Further, we suggest that purposeful management of inter-organisational relationships can represent a valid instrument for overcoming lack of legitimacy and gender barriers

The impact of environmental characteristics on TQM principles and organizational performance

    No full text
One recurrent theme within the literature on total quality management (TQM) is the study of its effect on organizational performance. Nonetheless, most research has focused on analyzing the relationships between the implementation of different elements and several types of performance. This paper incorporates the effect of organizational environment as a variable for explaining the impact of TQM on business results. The model is tested using structural equations, employing a survey of quality managers in 273 Spanish firms. The causal analysis results show that dynamism, munificence and complexity influence the degree of implementation of the main TQM principles. The most relevant effects emerge as a result of the environmental dynamism, and the least effects are due to munificence. Similarly, the dimensions of TQM have an impact on different types of performance. The model can be used by organizations to assess their level of TQM success depending on specific environmental characteristics.Total quality management Performance Organizational environment Structural equations
