Global Noise and Global Englishes
Global Noise: Rap and Hip-Hop Outside the USA, alluding to Tricia Roseâs US rap-music book, Black Noise, aims to do much more than merely extend the reach of the study of rap and hip-hop beyond the USA, as its subtitle might suggest. While acknowledging the importance of the work of both Rose and Potter, this collectionâs editor, Tony Mitchell, contests their respective views that rap and hip-hop are essentially expressions of African-American culture, and that all forms of rap and hip-hop derive from these origins. He argues that these forms have become âa vehicle for global youth affiliations and a tool for reworking local iden- tity all over the worldâ

Translanguaging and embodied teaching and learning: lessons from a multilingual karate club in London
The purpose of this article is to explore the role of embodied repertories in
teaching and learning in a multi-ethnic karate club in East London and its
implications for language teaching and learning. We do so through the
lens of translanguaging and apply the concept of translanguaging space
where diverse semiotic systems are integrated and orchestrated. Through a
close examination of how teaching and learning takes place in the karate
club, we argue that embodied repertories are central to interactions and
pedagogy. The coach manages and instructs the class through
orchestration of embodied repertories and verbal instructions. Learning
Japanese karate terms becomes part of embodied performance, repeated,
copied and polished along with drilling of physical moves, whilst the other
available linguistic repertories, Polish and English, become languages of
discipline, explanation, elaboration or reinforcement. Such translanguaging
practices serve the purpose of the karate club envisaged by the coach and
become an effective way of communication amongst the participants from
diverse linguistic backgrounds. The notion of translanguaging, in particular,
the idea of orchestration, helps to highlight the multiplexity of resources in
embodied teaching and learning and overcomes the monolingual and the
lingual biases
\u27Struggling with Language\u27 : Indigenous movements for Linguistic Security and the Politics of Local Community
In this article, I explore the relationship between linguistic diversity and political power. Specifically, I outline some of the ways that linguistic diversity has served as a barrier to the centralization of power, thus constraining, for example, the political practice of empire-formation. A brief historical example of this dynamic is presented in the case of Spanish colonialism of the 16th-century. The article proceeds then to demonstrate how linguistic diversity remains tied to struggles against forms of domination. I argue that in contemporary indigenous movements for linguistic security, the languages themselves are not merely conceived of as the object of the political struggle, but also as the means to preserve a space for local action and deliberation â a âpolitics of local communityâ. I show that linguistic diversity and the devolution of political power to the local level are in a mutually reinforcing relationship. Finally, I consider the implications of this thesis for liberal theorizing on language rights, arguing that such theory cannot fully come to terms with this political-strategic dimension of language struggles
Just use it! Linguistic conversion and identities of resistance amongst Galician new speakers
In recent years there has been a focus in language policy research on understanding how national policies are interpreted and negotiated by social actors on the ground. This paper looks at the interplay between government and grassroots initiatives to create Galician-speaking spaces in predominantly Spanish-speaking urban settings. While official language policies in Galicia since the 1980s have increased the potential for language use through bilingual educational policies, these policies have failed to convert the large pool of potential speakers amongst a younger generation of Galicians into active language users. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and in-depth interviews with Galician neofalantes (new speakers) this paper looks at instances where such policies seem to have worked and where the linguistic capacity created through the education system has been converted into active language use. The article examines how such speakers rationalise their practice of linguistic conversion not as success stories of language policy but as reactions to and dissatisfaction with what is perceived as âtop-downâ governmentality through a reflexive process in which existing power structures are brought into question. The article looks specifically as the ideologies underpinning their decisions to become active speakers and the role they play as language planners in contemporary Galicia
The Uses of Stance in Media Production: Embodied Sociolinguistics and Beyond
While many conversation analysts, and scholars in related fields, have used video-recordings to study interaction, this study is one of a small but growing number that investigates video-recordings of the joint activities of media professionals working with, and on, video. It examines practices of media production that are, in their involvement with the visual and verbal qualities of video, both beyond talk and deeply shaped by talk. The article draws upon video recordings of the making of a feature-length documentary. In particular, it analyses a complex course of action where an editing team are reviewing their interview of the subject of the documentary, their footage is being intercut with existing reality TV footage of that same interviewee. The central contributions that the article makes are, firstly, to the sociolinguistics of mediatisation, through the identification of the workplace concerns of the members of the editing team, secondly showing how editing is accomplished, moment-by-moment, through the use of particular forms of embodied action and, finally, how the media themselves feature in the ordering of action. While this is professional work it sheds light on the video-mediated practices in contemporary culture, especially those found in social media where video makers carefully consider their editing of the perspective toward themselves and others
