A photon phreak digs the LDEF happening

    Get PDF
A year ago at the First Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) Post-Retrieval Symposium, detailed measurements on trunnion sections, as well as results from 'intentional' samples (Co, Ni, In, Ta, and V) and spacecraft parts were reported. For this year's Symposium, some of these findings are re-evaluated in combination with more recent results, to cast a longer perspective on the LDEF experience, and to sketch some promising avenues toward more effective participation in future missions. The LDEF analysis effort has been a superb training exercise, from which lessons learned need to be applied to future missions - right back to the early phases of mission planning

    Normalizers of Irreducible Subfactors

We consider normalizers of an irreducible inclusion N⊆MN\subseteq M of II1\mathrm{II}_1 factors. In the infinite index setting an inclusion uNu∗⊆NuNu^*\subseteq N can be strict, forcing us to also investigate the semigroup of one-sided normalizers. We relate these normalizers of NN in MM to projections in the basic construction and show that every trace one projection in the relative commutant Nâ€Č∩N'\cap is of the form u∗eNuu^*e_Nu for some unitary u∈Mu\in M with uNu∗⊆NuNu^*\subseteq N. This enables us to identify the normalizers and the algebras they generate in several situations. In particular each normalizer of a tensor product of irreducible subfactors is a tensor product of normalizers modulo a unitary. We also examine normalizers of irreducible subfactors arising from subgroup--group inclusions H⊆GH\subseteq G. Here the normalizers are the normalizing group elements modulo a unitary from L(H)L(H). We are also able to identify the finite trace L(H)L(H)-bimodules in ℓ2(G)\ell^2(G) as double cosets which are also finite unions of left cosets.Comment: 33 Page

A six week modified sprint interval training program incorporating extended exercise bouts does not increase maximal cardiac output

    Get PDF
Sprint interval training (SIT) improves maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2max) and exercise performance but not maximal cardiac output (Q̇max). The brevity of typical SIT bouts (30-seconds) might hinder improvements in Q̇max. The purpose of this study was to determine whether extended duration SIT (up to 45 second bouts) improves Q̇max. Pre-/Post-SIT (or control) V̇O2max, Q̇max, maximum stroke volume (SVmax), maximum heart rate, arterial-mixed venous oxygen difference, and 5-minute run distance were measured. SIT progressed from 4x30s to 7x45s “all-out” efforts (4 min recovery) over 6 wk (3x/wk) on a manually driven treadmill. Following SIT, V̇O2max improved (pre-=3.6±0.8 vs post=3.8±0.8 L·min-1; p=0.012). Increases in Q̇max (pre-= 26.13±5.09 vs post=27.10±4.82 L·min-1; p=0.166) and SVmax (pre-= 138±27 vs post=144±28 mL·beat-1; p=0.095) were not significant. These data suggest 6 wk of extended SIT bouts (up to 45 s) does not increase Q̇max significantly and the observed increase in V̇O2max was due primarily to non-significant improvements in Q̇max and SVmax

THE FOODSERVICE INDUSTRY: A PROFILE AND EXAMINATION OF EASTERN FOODSERVICE DISTRIBUTORS

    Get PDF
The foodservice industry has grown rapidly over the past two decades and represents a major market for agricultural producers. The expansion of the foodservice industry has precipitated changes in the organization and structure of the industry and its distribution chain. The central link of particular interest to suppliers is the foodservice distributor industry. In addition to describing the organizational and structural components of the foodservice industry, this research describes the function of the foodservice distributors and analyzes key characteristics of distributors located throughout the eastern United States.Agribusiness,

Nasal Drug Delivery Systems: An Overview

    Get PDF
Since ancient times, drugs have been administered via the nasal route for therapeutic and recreational purposes. The interest in, and importance, of the systemic effects of drugs administered through the nasal route, have expanded over recent decades. Intra-nasal administration of drugs offers an interesting alternative for achieving systemic therapeutic effects of drugs that are comparable to the parenteral route, which can be inconvenient at times or oral administration, which can result in unacceptably low drug bioavailability. So, it is important to understand the potential and limitations of various nasal drug delivery systems. Therefore, the aim of this review article is to discuss the various pharmaceutical dosage forms that have the potential to be utilised for local or systemic drug administration. It is intuitively expected that this review will help to understand and further to develop suitable intra-nasal formulations to achieve specific therapeutic objectives

Oscillator strengths and line widths of dipole-allowed transitions in Âč⁎N₂ between 89.7 and 93.5 nm

    Get PDF
Line oscillator strengths in the 20 electric dipole-allowed bands of Âč⁎N₂ in the 89.7–93.5nm (111480–106950cm⁻Âč) region are reported from photoabsorptionmeasurements at an instrumental resolution of ∌6mÅ (0.7cm⁻Âč) full width at half maximum. The absorptionspectrum comprises transitions to vibrational levels of the 3pσᔀcâ€Č₄ÂčΣᔀâș, 3pπᔀc³Πᔀ, and 3sσgo₃ÂčΠᔀRydberg states and of the bâ€ČÂčΣᔀâș and bÂčΠᔀ valence states. The J dependences of band f values derived from the experimental line f values are reported as polynomials in Jâ€Č(Jâ€Č+1) and are extrapolated to Jâ€Č=0 in order to facilitate comparisons with results of coupled Schrödinger-equation calculations. Most bands in this study are characterized by a strong J dependence of the band f values and display anomalous P-, Q-, and R-branch intensity patterns. Predissociation line widths, which are reported for 11 bands, also exhibit strong J dependences. The f value and line width patterns can inform current efforts to develop comprehensive spectroscopic models that incorporate rotational effects and predissociation mechanisms, and they are critical for the construction of realistic atmospheric radiative-transfer models. This work was supported in part by NASA Grant No. NNG05GA03G to Wellesley College and Australian Research Council Discovery Program Grant No. DP0558962

DETERMINANTS OF CONSUMERS' PURCHASE DECISION FOR MAINE ROUND WHITE POTATOES

    Get PDF
Potatoes are marketed by type (i.e. round white, russet, red, etc.), rather than by variety. However, the round white varieties currently marketed by the Maine potato industry are known to differ considerably in terms of product characteristics. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that consumer acceptance of potatoes in home use varies by variety and to quantify how their level of acceptance and other characteristics impact their repurchase decision. A discrete choice model was used. The results indicated that consumers do differentiate round white potato varieties based on the performance of the potatoes in home use. Their willingness to repurchase the round white potatoes is affected by the variety used and the overall serving quality of the potatoes in home use.Consumer/Household Economics,

TESTING FOR DIFFERENCES IN CONSUMER ACCEPTANCE OF IDENTICALLY APPEARING POTATO VARIETIES

    Get PDF
Like many other vegetables, potatoes are marketed by type (russet, round white, red), rather than by variety (Burbak, Katahdin, Pontiac). Although varieties of the same type have similar outward appearances, they are also known to have different internal and cooking characteristics. There has been considerable controversy over the need for variety identification promotion in the potato industry. A consumer response study that distinguished between user satisfaction with different potato varieties was viewed as a step toward resolving this issue.Consumer/Household Economics,
