    A conjecture of Kadison and Kastler from 1972 asks whether sufficiently close operator algebras in a natural uniform sense must be small unitary perturbations of one another. For n≄3 and a free, ergodic, probability measure-preserving action of SL<sub>n</sub>(Z) on a standard nonatomic probability space (X,ÎŒ), write M=(L<sup>∞</sup>(X,ÎŒ)⋊SL<sub>n</sub>(Z))⊗¯¯¯R, where R is the hyperfinite II1-factor. We show that whenever M is represented as a von Neumann algebra on some Hilbert space H and N⊆B(H) is sufficiently close to M, then there is a unitary u on H close to the identity operator with uMu∗=N. This provides the first nonamenable class of von Neumann algebras satisfying Kadison and Kastler’s conjecture. We also obtain stability results for crossed products L<sup>∞</sup>(X,ÎŒ)⋊Γ whenever the comparison map from the bounded to usual group cohomology vanishes in degree 2 for the module L<sup>2</sup>(X,ÎŒ). In this case, any von Neumann algebra sufficiently close to such a crossed product is necessarily isomorphic to it. In particular, this result applies when Γ is a free group

    Foam nest components of the tĂșngara frog: a cocktail of proteins conferring physical and biological resilience

    The foam nests of the tĂșngara frog (Engystomops pustulosus) form a biocompatible incubation medium for eggs and sperm while resisting considerable environmental and microbiological assault. We have shown that much of this behaviour can be attributed to a cocktail of six proteins, designated ranaspumins (Rsn-1 to Rsn-6), which predominate in the foam. These fall into two discernable classes based on sequence analysis and biophysical properties. Rsn-2, with an amphiphilic amino acid sequence unlike any hitherto reported, exhibits substantial detergent-like surfactant activity necessary for production of foam, yet is harmless to the membranes of eggs and spermatozoa. A further four (Rsn-3 to Rsn-6) are lectins, three of which are similar to fucolectins found in teleosts but not previously identified in a land vertebrate, though with a carbohydrate binding specificity different from previously described fucolectins. The sixth, Rsn-1, is structurally similar to proteinase inhibitors of the cystatin class, but does not itself appear to exhibit any such activity. The nest foam itself, however, does exhibit potent cystatin activity. Rsn-encoding genes are transcribed in many tissues of the adult frogs, but the full cocktail is present only in oviduct glands. Combinations of lectins and cystatins have known roles in plants and animals for defence against microbial colonization and insect attack. TĂșngara nest foam displays a novel synergy of selected elements of innate defence plus a specialized surfactant protein, comprising a previously unreported strategy for protection of unattended reproductive stages of animals

    Relationships between plasma amino acid concentrations and blood pressure in South Africans of African descent

    Oral supplementation with the amino acid arginine, the precursor of the vasodilator nitric oxide (NO), is associated with a reduction in blood pressure (BP). However, it is uncertain whether a decreased plasma arginine concentration predicts increases in BP. We assessed the relationship between fasting plasma arginine or other amino acid concentrations and 24 hour ambulatory BP in 75 nevertreated participants recruited from the Johannesburg area, 55 of whom were male. Plasma amino acid concentrations were measured with high performance liquid chromatography-mass-spectrometry. Plasma arginine concentrations were not inversely correlated with ambulatory BP. However, plasma arginine concentrations were increased in 36 participants with a mean daytime systolic BP >140 mm Hg (61 ± 17 ÎŒmol/L) as compared to the remaining participants (54 ± 15 ÎŒmol/L, pâ€č0.05). Moreover, plasma arginine concentrations were positively correlated with 24-hour diastolic BP (r=0.26, pâ€č0.05). In males with a BMIâ€č30kg/m2, plasma arginine concentrations were positively correlated with both night diastolic (r=0.46, pâ€č0.005) and systolic (r=0.42, pâ€č0.005) BP. In a multivariate model with adjustments for age gender, body mass index, and other amino acid concentrations, plasma arginine concentrations were independently and positively associated with night diastolic BP (pâ€č0.05). In conclusion plasma arginine concentrations are positively associated with ambulatory BP in a group of participants of African descent in South Africa. These data do not support the notion that deficiencies of arginine, the amino acid substrate for NO, are related to increases in BP in groups of African ancestry living in South Africa. However, as with other ethnic groups, the positive relationship between plasma arginine concentrations and BP suggests a reduced capacity to utilise the amino acid substrate for NO synthesis

    Probable detection of starlight reflected from the giant exoplanet orbiting tau Bootis

    Giant planets orbiting stars other than the Sun are clearly detectable through precise radial-velocity measurements of the orbital reflex motion of the parent star. In the four years since the discovery of the companion to the star 51 Peg, similar low-amplitude ``Doppler star wobbles'' have revealed the presence of some 20 planets orbiting nearby solar-type stars. Several of these newly-discovered planets are very close to their parent stars, in orbits with periods of only a few days. Being an indirect technique, however, the reflex-velocity method has little to say about the sizes or compositions of the planets, and can only place lower limits on their masses. Here we report the use of high-resolution optical spectroscopy to achieve a probable detection of the Doppler-shifted signature of starlight reflected from one of these objects, the giant exoplanet orbiting the star tau Bootis. Our data give the planet's orbital inclination i=29 degrees, indicating that its mass is some 8 times that of Jupiter, and suggest strongly that the planet has the size and reflectivity expected for a gas-giant planet.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures. In this contribution, we present the synthesis and characterisation of two thiophene-based macrocycles as well as their evaluation in organic-electronic devices. McT-1 is composed of ten thiophene moieties, whereas in McT-2, four additional electron-deficient benzothiadiazole moieties are incorporated to form a donor–acceptor (D–A) π-system. Red-shifted and broadened absorption spectra as well as more positive redox potentials are observed in McT-2, whereas McT-1 displays a sharper absorption band with a higher extinction coefficient. Macrocycle McT-1 shows emission in the yellow region whereas McT-2 displays emission in the red wavelength region. DFT calculations predict the macrocycles to comprise of mainly the E,E isomers with a near-planar structure, which is further supported by the single crystal X-ray structure for McT-1. Their charge transporting properties are determined by fabricating thin-film OFETs. The photovoltaic properties of McT-1 and McT-2 are also investigated by fabricating bulk heterojunction (BHJ) devices and their potential as photodetectors has been evaluated.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
