    Gamma ray monitoring of a AGN and galactic black hole candidates by the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory

    The Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory's Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) has a powerful capability to provide nearly uninterrupted monitoring in the 25 keV-10 MeV range of both active galactic nuclei (AGN) and galactic black hole candidates (GBHC) such as Cygnus X-1, using the occultation of cosmic sources by the Earth. Since the Crab is detected by the BATSE Large Area Detectors with roughly 25(sigma) significance in the 15-125 keV range in a single rise or set, a variation by a factor of two of a source having one-tenth the strength of Cygnus X-1 should be detectable within a day. Methods of modeling the background are discussed which will increase the accuracy, sensitivity, and reliability of the results beyond those obtainable from a linear background fit with a single rise or set discontinuity

    This study aimed to determine the factors affecting the academic performance of grade 11 STEM students of ECT Excellencia Global Academy Foundation Inc. The factors affecting a student’s academic performance arise from several reasons. Accordingly, this study was done to identify the factors affecting the academic performance of grade 11 stem students, which may ultimately help in the improvement of both students and teachers. The students may gain from this research by being able to understand better the elements that may affect their academic performance. They might be able to improve their academic standing by using the findings that this investigation establishes. A quantitative research method was employed. The researchers primarily gathered the data for statistical analysis through which the specified survey questionnaires were distributed to the respondents in this research study. Average weighted mean was used to determine the level of impact of the different factors affecting the respondents’ academic performance

    Physical, Chemical, and Petrological Characteristics of Chondritic Materials and Their Relationships to Small Solar System Bodies

    Chondrite materials with varying abundances of volatile-bearing phases are expected at the destinations for the asteroid sample-return missions Hayabusa2 and OSIRIS-REx. The targets of the missions are 162173 (1999 JU3) Ryugu and 101955 (1999 RQ36) Bennu. Spectroscopic analyses of these asteroids suggest that their surface materials are related to types 1 and 2 carbonaceous chondrites. Some studies suggest that the parent bodies of these chondrites may have also experienced some thermal and/or shock metamorphism. The physical properties of boulders at asteroid surfaces and fine particles in asteroid regoliths are consequences of the diverse processes that fragmented them, mobilized them, and redeposited them in unique accumulations. Sample-return missions are likely to encounter a broad range of carbonaceous chondrite (CC)-like materials, to which aqueous alteration, thermal, and shock metamorphism imparted changes affecting their sub-micron- to meter-scale physical properties. Consequently, implementation of scale-dependent analytical techniques to the study of the chemical, physical, and geotechnical characteristics of these CC-like materials is fundamental to safe mission operations, sample selection, and return. However, most of the available knowledge for informing and formulating expectations about regolith processes, products, and properties on carbonaceous small bodies comes from missions that studied anhydrous (e.g., Itokawa studied by Hayabusa) and/or much larger asteroids (e.g., Vesta studied by Dawn). No previous mission is likely directly relevant to small ice-free carbonaceous NEOs 162173 Ryugu or 101955 Bennu, although the Rosetta Spaceraft performed a flyby of the large asteroid Lutetia which has variously been classified as M and C type (Ptzold et al., 2011). Carbonaceous chondrites carry the best record of the history, distribution, and activity of water in the early solar system. Ordinary and Enstatite chondrites carry only partial records, but these are still critical to understanding the full story. We will describe the records of water-rock interactions on asteroids, as recorded in these meteorites, with particular emphasis on the timing, nature, settings, and fluid compositions. An integral part of this story is the rare, but fortunate, preservation of actual early solar system water as aqueous fluid inclusions

    Does the load-sharing classification predict ligamentous injury, neurological injury, and the need for surgery in patients with thoracolumbar burst fractures?: Clinical article.

    OBJECT: The load-sharing score (LSS) of vertebral body comminution is predictive of results after short-segment posterior instrumentation of thoracolumbar burst fractures. Some authors have posited that an LSS \u3e 6 is predictive of neurological injury, ligamentous injury, and the need for surgical intervention. However, the authors of the present study hypothesized that the LSS does not predict ligamentous or neurological injury. METHODS: The prospectively collected spinal cord injury database from a single institution was queried for thoracolumbar burst fractures. Study inclusion criteria were acute (\u3c 24 hours) burst fractures between T-10 and L-2 with preoperative CT and MRI. Flexion-distraction injuries and pathological fractures were excluded. Four experienced spine surgeons determined the LSS and posterior ligamentous complex (PLC) integrity. Neurological status was assessed from a review of the medical records. RESULTS: Forty-four patients were included in the study. There were 4 patients for whom all observers assigned an LSS \u3e 6, recommending operative treatment. Eleven patients had LSSs ≤ 6 across all observers, suggesting that nonoperative treatment would be appropriate. There was moderate interobserver agreement (0.43) for the overall LSS and fair agreement (0.24) for an LSS \u3e 6. Correlations between the LSS and the PLC score averaged 0.18 across all observers (range -0.02 to 0.34, p value range 0.02-0.89). Correlations between the LSS and the American Spinal Injury Association motor score averaged -0.12 across all observers (range -0.25 to -0.03, p value range 0.1-0.87). Correlations describing the relationship between an LSS \u3e 6 and the treating physician\u27s decision to operate averaged 0.17 across all observers (range 0.11-0.24, p value range 0.12-0.47). CONCLUSIONS: The LSS does not uniformly correlate with the PLC injury, neurological status, or empirical clinical decision making. The LSSs of only one observer correlated significantly with PLC injury. There were no significant correlations between the LSS as determined by any observer and neurological status or clinical decision making

    The Villalbeto de la Peña meteorite fall: I. Fireball energy, meteorite recovery, strewn field, and petrography

    An impressive daylight fireball was observed from Spain, Portugal, and the south of France at 16h46m45s UTC on January 4, 2004. The meteoroid penetrated into the atmosphere, generating shock waves that reached the ground and produced audible booms. The associated airwave was recorded at a seismic station located 90 km north of the fireball trajectory in Spain, and at an infrasound station in France located 750 km north-east of the fireball. The absolute magnitude of the bolide has been determined to be -18 ± 1 from a casual video record. The energy released in the atmosphere determined from photometric, seismic, and infrasound data was about 0.02 kilotons (kt). A massive fragmentation occurred at a height of 28 ± 0.2 km, resulting in a meteorite strewn field of 20 ± 6 km. The first meteorite specimen was found on January 11, 2004, near the village of Villalbeto de la Pena, in northern Palencia (Spain). To date, about 4.6 kg of meteorite mass have been recovered during several recovery campaigns. The meteorite is a moderately shocked (S4) L6 ordinary chondrite with a cosmic-ray-exposure age of 48 ± 5 Ma. Radioisotope analysis shows that the original body had a mass of 760 ± 150 kg, which is in agreement with the estimated mass obtained from photometric and seismic measurements
