    Redesign optimization for manufacturing using additive layer techniques

    Improvements in additive manufacturing technologies have the potential to greatly provide value to designers that could also contribute towards improving the sustainability levels of products as well as the production of lightweight products. With these improvements, it is possible to eliminate the design restrictions previously faced by manufacturers. This study examines the principles of additive manufacturing, design guidelines, capabilities of the manufacturing processes and structural optimisation using topology optimisation. Furthermore, a redesign methodology is proposed and illustrated through a redesign case study of an existing bracket. The optimal design is selected using multi-criteria decision analysis method. The challenges for using additive manufacturing technologies are discussed

    A Note on Separable Nonlinear Least Squares Problem

    Separable nonlinear least squares (SNLS)problem is a special class of nonlinear least squares (NLS)problems, whose objective function is a mixture of linear and nonlinear functions. It has many applications in many different areas, especially in Operations Research and Computer Sciences. They are difficult to solve with the infinite-norm metric.     The effect of error correction types on grammatical accuracy in student essay revision

    There has been an on-going debate on whether error feedback helps students to improve their grammatical accuracy from one draft to the other (Ferris, 1999; Truscott, 1996; 1999). Some studies found that error correction was effective (Ferris & Roberts, 2001) and others refuted this argument (Semke, 1984; Kepner, 1990). Their findings showed that feedback had no or non-significant effects on accuracy. According to previous research, one area which has not been properly studied is a comparison between groups receiving feedback and a no feedback group. Therefore, the present study investigated the effect of feedback on grammatical accuracy by comparing three types of feedback: errors coded, errors underlined, and no grammar feedback. The instruments included a pretest, a posttest and two treatments. Participants were first- year students in the English Literature and Language Department at Ain Shams University. Means and standard deviations were calculated. ANOVA and dependent t-tests were also used to analyze the data. Data analysis revealed no significant differences in the improvement of grammatical accuracy in the two treatment groups. It was however found that both treatment groups outperformed the no-feedback group in editing verb and noun-related errors. However, the control group outperformed the two other groups in correcting their article-related errors. The researcher concluded that even if students do not receive grammar feedback, their writing improves because of the rewriting process itself

    Multi-Hop Wireless Sensor Network for Continuous Oxygen Tank’s Level Detection

    Wireless sensor network technology is considered as one of the modern technologies that are used in a lot of areas to measure physical, chemical or environmental variables because of their low of cost and high efficiency in data transmission. This project aims to design a wireless sensor network that will be used to measure pressure or level of Oxygen gas inside the Oxygen tanks that are found in different places in hospitals in order to overcome the problem of the manual checking of tanks level, which may cause a lot of problems because of the lack of accuracy measurement and the absence of a continuous monitoring from the control room. The designing of this project will be based on the concept of multi-hop wireless sensor network using XBee modules. XCTU software will be used to update and configure XBee modules and PROCESSING software will be used to develop a program that reads data from XBee and show it in interactive way on the screen

    Salmonella Infection Among farm Animals in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates.

    Salmonellosis is considered one of the most economically significant diseases, affecting man and different animals. The disease affects all ages of domesticated and wild living animals. Salmonellosis manifests a variety of clinical signs such as diarrhea, abortion, arthritis and respiratory problems. The natural habitat of Salmonella species is the intestinal tract of most animal species. Carrier animals represent a continuous source of shedding the bacteria in the surrounding environment. Salmonella infection among animals and then to man causing public health hazard. In this study, a total of 882 samples were collected from different animal species in Al Ain area of Abu Dhabi Emirate in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The fecal sample were aseptically collected from apparently healthy camels (266), cows (122), sheep (255), and goats (187). On the other hand, 52 samples were obtained from scouring and pyrexic camels (7), cows (10), sheep (6), goats (5), game animals (3) and avian species (17). Also samples were submitted from aborted foetus of a goat and fecal swab were obtained from aborting cow. All samples from apparently healthy and affected animals were subjected to Salmonella isolation and identification protocol. Each sample was inoculated into selenite broth medium and incubated at 37°C for 24 hours. A loopful from each broth was streaked on plates of blood agar, Salmonella Shigella agar and Hektoen enteric agar. The plates were incubated at 37°C for 24 hours. The yielded colonies were identified according to their cultural and biochemical properties. The isolated Salmonella were grouped (A-G) and partially serotyped was carried out by veterinary Laboratory Agency in Weybridge, UK. The present findings showed that, Salmonella infection is highly prevalent in cows and camels, whereas sheep and goats score the least incidence of the disease. To our best knowledge, no records are available to date of any isolation of Salmonella species in cows, sheep and goats nor serological evidence that exist in UAE. This study reports the first isolation of Salmonella serotypes in cows, sheep and goats. Also, this study acknowledges the isolation of S. Indiana, S. Stanley, S. Haardt, S. Panama, S. Panama, S. Liverpool and S. Poona for the first time in camels of the UAE
