Structural applications of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composite tubes: a review of columns members

    Get PDF
Use of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) in column applications is increased because it can act as a confining material, a reinforcement and a structural column. The application of FRP tubes is correlated with the fibre orientation since tube stiffness is mainly attributed to the stiffness of fibres. Thus, for confinement, the fibres should align in the transverse direction of the tube while they should align in the axial direction when tubes are used as compression members. FRP tubes with fibres mainly in axial direction may reach failure because the stiffness in the perpendicular direction to fibres depends only on the stiffness of the matrix. In order to boost the stiffness in the secondary direction while supporting fibres in the main direction, fibres should be in multi-directions. This paper reviews and identifies gaps in knowledge on the use of FRP materials in column applications in new or existing construction regimes

The experimental use of television in a developing country: widening social recruitment into the nursing profession in Bahrain

This research is concerned with the effects of mass media campaigns. Specifically it explores the effects of a specially designed persuasive campaign on television in Bahrain, with the object of increasingthtnumber of female recruits into the nursing profession in that country. The research also seeks to make theoretical and more general contributions to the design of effective media campaigns. The study was done at the instigation of the Ministry of Health in Bahrain. After a preliminary review of the literature, which showed up the many controversies in the field of persuasion, the first stage of the study explored the difficulties and resistances experienced by Bahraini girls who might wish to enrol in the School of Nursing. A series of television programmes was then designed specifically to counteract these resistances. These programmes were broadcast by Bahraini television at peak viewing times on three successive weeks and their effects were assessed among 3,226 pupils between the ages of 13 and 16 years, comprising virtually all the potential candidates for the Nursing School for the following year. The design used was a before-and-after field experiment in a naturalistic setting comprising: (a) and (b) two experimental groups who had seen either some or all of the programmes, a control group who did not watch any of the special programmes. The pupils were all given a number of scales and questionnaires both before and after the programmes were broadcast and a special analysis was carried out between comparable sub-samples. The results showed, broadly speaking, that the programmes had been successful in overcoming the earlier resistances, more so among the girls who had seen all the programmes. These girls also showed a significant increase in their knowledge about nursing and more favourable attitudes towards nursing as a profession. Information from the School of Nursing indicated a rise in the number of applicants and it was claimed that applicants were of an improved academic standard. Previous campaigns of this kind in Bahrain have been unsuccessful. The present study shows that if the programmes are carefully planned to counteract audience resistance which had been previously determined, positive results can be obtained. The study also shows that it is feasible even in a developing country, to conduct a naturalistic yet well controlled field experiment

We assessed the influence of gender on the performance in surgical and medical disciplines in undergraduate final theory examinations at College of Medicine, University of Dammam, Saudi Arabia. The college admits 200 students (120 males and 80 females) every year in the 6 year degree program. The results of written exam for the year 2008-09 for all subjects were analyzed. The question papers consisted of multiple choice tests only. There were 50 assessments which included 19 from medical, 22 from surgical and 9 from pre-clinical disciplines. Using cross sectional design we analyzed the students' theory results. The female students showed overall better performance in all theory assessments (mean ยฑSD; 71.21ยฑ7.89 vs. 67.14ยฑ8.08, p=0.01). In a subject-wise comparison, the female students showed significantly higher mean scores in 24 out of 50 assessments. Both the genders had comparable scores for medical disciplines (n=19 assessments), however, in surgical disciplines femalesโ€™ performance was superior (mean ยฑSD; 72.0ยฑ6.6 vs. 67.47ยฑ7.0; p=0.03). The female students showed significantly better scores in surgical disciplines than in medical disciplines and they outperformed male students in overall scores in surgical disciplines
