Strategy Tripod Perspective on the Determinants of Airline Efficiency in A Global Context: An Application of DEA and Tobit Analysis

    Get PDF
The airline industry is vital to contemporary civilization since it is a key player in the globalization process: linking regions, fostering global commerce, promoting tourism and aiding economic and social progress. However, there has been little study on the link between the operational environment and airline efficiency. Investigating the amalgamation of institutions, organisations and strategic decisions is critical to understanding how airlines operate efficiently. This research aims to employ the strategy tripod perspective to investigate the efficiency of a global airline sample using a non-parametric linear programming method (data envelopment analysis [DEA]). Using a Tobit regression, the bootstrapped DEA efficiency change scores are further regressed to determine the drivers of efficiency. The strategy tripod is employed to assess the impact of institutions, industry and resources on airline efficiency. Institutions are measured by global indices of destination attractiveness; industry, including competition, jet fuel and business model; and finally, resources, such as the number of full-time employees, alliances, ownership and connectivity. The first part of the study uses panel data from 35 major airlines, collected from their annual reports for the period 2011 to 2018, and country attractiveness indices from global indicators. The second part of the research involves a qualitative data collection approach and semi-structured interviews with experts in the field to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on the first part’s significant findings. The main findings reveal that airlines operate at a highly competitive level regardless of their competition intensity or origin. Furthermore, the unpredictability of the environment complicates airline operations. The efficiency drivers of an airline are partially determined by its type of business model, its degree of cooperation and how fuel cost is managed. Trade openness has a negative influence on airline efficiency. COVID-19 has toppled the airline industry, forcing airlines to reconsider their business model and continuously increase cooperation. Human resources, sustainability and alternative fuel sources are critical to airline survival. Finally, this study provides some evidence for the practicality of the strategy tripod and hints at the need for a broader approach in the study of international strategies

This project is the study of the differences and similarities between news reporting, using specific media frames, in the US and France in regard to the representation of refugees in newspapers. I gathered a total of 213 articles written during the period of January 1, 2017 until September 30, 2018. Those articles were taken from two major newspapers in the US, The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal and two major newspapers in France, Le Monde and Le Figaro. For this research, I used content analysis in order to analyze the news articles reporting on the subject of refugees and to discover if important underlying messages were present. I chose major newspapers in the US and France with different political views, conservative and liberal in order to find out if the political tendency would somewhat be reflected in the choice of frames and the choice of certain words. The analysis revealed that political ideology did not influence the framing of refugees in terms of economic and security threats. While the human-interest frame should have been an important frame if not the most important frame related to refugees, this was not the case and was instead overshadowed by the managerialist frame. Even though labels such as liberal and conservative are subjective, newspapers choose how to report events and where they position the articles. This allows them to point to the readers the importance of the article in question. Nevertheless, the study did not reveal that refugees could be portrayed differently because a newspaper was considered liberal or conservative. In regard to the most used-frames when covering refugees in the news, the newspapers were rather similar in the frequency of using certain frames. They tended to report stories that were consistent with the policies of their host countries and of other countries as well. Both French and US newspapers reported on the refugee crisis both at home and abroad. In contrast, they differed in the use of certain terms, referred to as variables. Those terms were Islam/Muslim, integration/assimilation, and also using the term migrant/immigrant instead of refugee. The frequency of using certain terms were more predominant in the US newspapers and therefore set them apart

Equilibrium: public spectacle for social integration

This thesis explores the ways socio-cultural methods of integration can influence architecture, using built form as a catalyst for connection in fragmented cities or communities. Architecture plays a role in accentuating or diminishing socio-cultural segregation that exists in developing cities with diverse cultures. Doha, Qatar, with a population split between 13% National and 87% Expatriate, is an example of a developing city with extreme diversity that struggles to maintain its local community alongside foreign influx. The situation is jarringly apparent in the form of isolated architecture that has overtaken the city with glass towers and megastructures that are out of context with the desert weather and way of life. Isolated architecture enforces social boundaries through physical boundaries and strategically limited access. Social change will not be achieved by eliminating the expats or stripping the nationals of power or ownership of place; a democratic architectural intervention can create an equilibrium that heightens sense of social responsibility and allows for social integration. However, until that equilibrium is found, the society of Doha continues to become more fragmented due to lack of awareness and understanding of the integration that needs to occur, both on a social and architectural level. Integrating diversity through architecture requires three interconnected elements: first behavioral integration – a willingness to change has to be present on some level for socio-cultural development to accrue. Second, programmatic integration, outlined through public sphere theory – the needs of public spaces and public engagement, emphasizing free access, meeting strangers and freedom of expression. Giving a voice to the voiceless – storytelling allowing all to share their perspective on city life for a leveling ground and sense of equality. Third, architectural integration demands a public space typology, that allows for democratic architecture in design considerations and hosting public engagement activities. The site is a part of the city’s fabric that can host all the qualities needed for social and architectural integration. The water tower presents itself in a very standoffish manner throughout the city, almost forgotten due to its apparent abandonment. It is an obsolete icon of the city’s development, giving it an almost untouchable air of isolation and independence, though it once served all residents of Doha equally – making it a perfect location to create a public spectacle in which to tell stories of the city and its people. This thesis proposes an architectural intervention driven by acknowledgment of a human need for space that address the underlying issues of a diverse society

GLOBALIZATION AND NATIONAL IDENTITY IN QATAR: DOES EXPOSURE TO GLOBALIZATION LEAD TO CHANGES IN NATIONAL IDENTITY ACROSS DIFFERENT GENERATIONS OF QATARI CITIZENS?

This era is marked by globalization, a process whereby states and individuals are interconnected through a global network. Globalization entails the emergence of a global culture which is considered a threat to national identity, often publicized by states and academics. Further, globalization specifically cultural globalization is seen to have an impact on national identity particularly amongst younger generations. Nonetheless, studies haves shown that globalization is not always a negative phenomenon. The Qatar National Vision 2030 states that globalization can be compatible with Qatar’s culture and traditions, elements firmly ingrained in Qatar national identity. Qatar is committed to foster national identity to ensure national cohesiveness while retaining its role in the global network. The promotion of national identity amidst cultural globalization is a state goal. This research employs a quantitative research design to assess the impact of globalization on national identity across different generations of Qatari citizens namely those aged 18 and above. Based on the findings, it can be argued that globalization and national identity are positively correlated

Objectives: The aims of the study are to define the pattern of bacteremia and septicemia in Hamad Medical Corporation in relation to the susceptibility of the implicated microbes to various antimicrobial agents. Methods: During a period of 12 months of study, blood cultures were performed on 9074 patients in Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar, with clinical signs of infection. Among these, 789 (9%) episodes of septicemia were diagnosed, which corresponds to 20/1000 hospital admissions. Results: About 59% of the episodes were due to Gram positive organisms, the most common of which were coagulase negative staphylococci (31%), Staphylococcus aureus (7%) and Candida spp (6%), and other Gram positive organisms. Gram negative organisms implicated in 40% of episodes were mainly Salmonella spp (8%), Escherichia coli (7%), Klebsiella spp (5%) and other Gram negative organisms. The antibiotic resistance pattern of the organisms showed that S.aureus had the highest incidence of drug resistance. The case fatality rate among 66 episodes of septicemia was 24%, which increased with age, but was not influenced by sex. Polymicrobial septicemia carried the highest mortality rate. The case fatality rate of Gram positive septicemia was higher than that of Gram negative. Patients with underlying conditions, such as malignancy, chronic liver diseases, diabetes mellitus, renal failure, heart failure and conditions requiring surgery had higher mortality rates. The chance of survival increased with the use of appropriate therapy and absence of underlying disease. None of the patients with underlying conditions survived after receiving inappropriate therapy as compared with 50% who were previously healthy. Conclusions: Factors such as patients age, type of microorganism involved, the presence of underlying disease and the appropriateness of antibiotic therapy all influence the outcome of septicemia. While some patients with an underlying condition die of the consequences of septicemia despite appropriate antimicrobial therapy, other patients without any underlying disease tolerate septicemia reasonably well
