    Adoption Of Social Networking In Education: A Study Of The Use Of Social Networks By Higher Education Students In Oman

    The use of social networks is a growing phenomenon, being increasingly important in both private and academic life. Social networks are used as tools to enable users to have social interaction. The use of social networks (SNs) complements and enhances the teaching in traditional classrooms. For example, YouTube, Facebook, wikis, and blogs provide a huge amount of material on a wide range of subjects. This research aims to explore the need to change the traditional style of teaching and learning after the innovation of Web 2.0. The main objectives of this research are to discover the motives for the use of social networks by higher education students in Oman, to recognize the impact of social networking tools in learning and education generally, to analyse the problems that students might face when using social networks, and to determine whether the traditional learning methods need to be changed in the era of Web 2.0 technologies? In order to achieve the objectives of this research, the research methodology is to conduct a survey amongst Omani students at different universities, colleges, and other higher education institutions and to explore the social networking tools that might have an influence on teaching and learning styles. The type of data collected will be both quantitative and qualitative. This study is based mainly on the student's perspective - the impact on students of using social networking tools and what effect it has on the traditional style of learning and teaching. This study highlights the benefits of using social networks as tools for developing a new style of learning, and the negative impacts that can affect the process of learning, in order to provide a justification for using social networks in higher education

    Noninvasive Ventilation and High-Flow Nasal Cannulae Therapy for Children with Acute Respiratory Failure: An overview

    Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) refers to the use of techniques to deliver artificial respiration to the lungs without the need for endotracheal intubation. As NIV has proven beneficial in comparison to invasive mechanical ventilation, it has become the optimal modality for initial respiratory support among children in respiratory distress. High-flow nasal cannulae (HFNC) therapy is a relatively new NIV modality and is used for similar indications. This review discusses the usefulness and applications of conventional NIV in comparison to HFNC.     Seismic Upgradation of RC Beams Strengthened with Externally Bonded Spent Catalyst Based Ferrocement Laminates

    Globally, since there are more systems of civil infrastructure, there are also more degraded buildings and structures. If upgrading or strengthening is a practical option, complete replacement is likely to be an escalating financial burden and may be a waste of natural resources. It is necessary to repair or strengthen a number of reinforced concrete buildings and structures in order to boost their load-bearing capabilities or improve their ductility under seismic stress. Additionally, due to changes in service circumstances, a structure might need to be modified to reduce deflections or manage cracking. Strengthening may be preferable to limiting usage, capping applied loads, and regularly inspecting the structure rather than removing the existing structure or part and building a new one. This study aims to examine the flexural, shear, and combined effect of flexural and shear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with externally bonded spent catalyst-based ferrocement laminates and compare them to the control beams (unstrengthened) under two-point loading conditions. This study involves researching laminates with various spent catalyst doses, such as 3, 6, 9, and 12%, in an effort to determine the best amounts that will improve the structural performance of ferrocement laminates. Twelve spent catalyst-based ferrocement laminates measuring 500(L) × 125(B) × 20 mm (thickness) with 3% volume fraction of meshes each were cast and tested in the lab as part of the preliminary investigation. For repeatability, three laminates per case were employed. Eight numbers of under-reinforced RC beams measuring 75(L) × 100(B) × 150(D) mm were cast for the main study; six numbers were strengthened with optimized spent catalyst-based ferrocement laminates bonded with flexible epoxy systems at the tension zone, shear zone, and combination of tension and shear zone. Two of the beams were cast as control specimens. The beams were then evaluated using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM) with a 1000 kN capacity under two-point loading conditions. As a result, the strength, yield load, ultimate load, stiffness, ductility, and related failure modes of all tested beams' flexural and shear performances were examined. According to a preliminary analysis of laminates made of spent catalyst, the dosage of 9% provides good flexural strength in comparison to other doses. In comparison to the strengthened beam, the control beam's initial cracks appeared earlier. In comparison to the control beam, the strengthened beam has an increase in load-carrying capacity of 18% for flexure, 16% for shear, and 30% for the combined impact of flexure and shear. In comparison to the control beam, the deflection of the strengthened beam was decreased by close to 20 to 40% for flexure, 10 to 30% for shear, and 15 to 20% for the combined effects of flexure and shear at the same load level. In relation to control beams, the ductility also improved up to 30% for flexure, 25% for shear, and 25% for the combined impact of flexure and shear. Similar to this, the retrofitted beam is stiffer than the control beam by approximately 40% for flexure, 48% for shear, and 30% for the combined effect of flexure and shear. Theoretical formulation by section analysis is also derived and it gives close agreement with control and strengthened beams. The flexural and shear strengthening of the RC beam retrofitting system is effectively increased by using spent catalyst-based ferrocement laminates. No beam showed signs of premature and brittle failure.     Transposition of the Great Arteries and Coarctation of the Aorta in an Infant Presenting with Bronchiolitis : An incidental finding

    The transposition of the great arteries (TGA) is a complex congenital heart disease which usually presents as cyanosis in neonates with limited mixing between the systemic and pulmonary circulatory systems. A delayed diagnosis of TGA can lead to ventricular failure. We report a six-week-old infant who was admitted to the paediatric Intensive Care Unit of the Royal Hospital, Muscat, Oman, in 2016 for bronchiolitis. During admission, she was incidentally diagnosed with TGA and coarctation of the aorta. Postnatal screening, including the use of pulse oximetry, plays a significant role in avoiding a late diagnosis of TGA; however, this screening tool is not widely used in Oman. Moreover, the common practice of applying a pulse oximetry probe only to the foot may have been limited in the current case due to the reverse differential saturation between the upper and lower limbs caused by this particular combination of lesions

    Outcomes of Infants Undergoing Modified Blalock-Taussig Shunt Procedures in Oman: A retrospective study

    Objectives: A modified Blalock-Taussig (mBT) shunt procedure is a common palliative surgery used to treat infants and children with cyanotic congenital heart disease (CCHD). This study aimed to report the outcomes of infants and children undergoing mBT shunt procedures in Oman. In addition, risk factors associated with early mortality, inter-stage mortality and reintervention were assessed. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted from January 2016 to December 2018 at the National Heart Centre, Muscat, Oman. All paediatric patients with CCHD undergoing mBT shunt procedures as a primary palliative procedure during this period were included. Data were retrieved from electronic hospital records. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were used to describe overall survival. Results: A total of 50 infants and children were included in the study. The in-hospital mortality and inter-stage mortality rates were 10% and 6.7%, respectively. Preoperative mechanical ventilation (odds ratio [OR]: 3.00, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.98–4.76; P = 0.007) and cardiopulmonary bypass (OR: 4.09, 95% CI: 2.44–6.85; P = 0.002) were significant risk factors for early mortality. In-hospital and interval surgical reintervention rates were 12% and 13.3%, respectively. Following the primary shunt procedure, the median time to second-stage surgery was 15.5 months (range: 5.0–34.0 months). Conclusion: The findings of this study support those reported in international research regarding the risks associated with mBT shunt surgeries. In particular, preoperative mechanical ventilation and cardiopulmonary bypass were significant risk factors for early mortality.     Self-bound embedding Class I anisotropic stars by gravitational decoupling within vanishing complexity factor formalism

    We present a spherically symmetric embedding Class I solution for compact star models using the gravitational decoupling approach. We have chosen a null complexity factor condition proposed by Herrera (Phys Rev D 97:044010, 2018) in the context of a self-gravitating system and derive the anisotropic solution through a systematic approach given by Contreras and Stuchlik (Eur Phys J C 82:706, 2022). In this regard, we use the Finch–Skea model along with the mimicking of mass constraint to find fluid pressure and the matter-energy density from the Einstein Field Equations (EFE). We tested the physical viability and impact of gravitational decoupling on the anisotropic solution through the graphical representation. Moreover, the energy exchange between the fluid distributions along with the mass-radius ratio of different compact objects has been also discussed

    In-Hospital Outcome of Patients with Cardiogenic Shock Complicating Acute Myocardial Infarction: Results from Royal Hospital Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Registry, Oman

    Objectives: Cardiogenic shock (CS) is still the leading cause of in-hospital mortality in patients presenting with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The aim of this study was to determine the in-hospital mortality and clinical outcome in AMI patients presenting with CS in a tertiary hospital in Oman. Methods: This retrospective observational study included patients admitted to the cardiology department between January 2013 and December 2014. A purposive sampling technique was used, and 63 AMI patients with CS admitted to (36.5%) or transferred from a regional hospital (63.5%) were selected for the study. Results: Of 63 patients, 73% (n = 46) were Omani and 27% (n = 17) were expatriates: 79% were male and 21% were female. The mean age of patients was 60±12 years. The highest incidence of CS (30%) was observed in the 51–60 year age group. Diabetes mellitus (43%) and hypertension (40%) were the predominant risk factors. Ninety-two percent of patients had ST-elevation MI, 58.7% patients were thrombolysed, and 8% had non-ST-elevation MI. Three-quarters (75%) of CS patients had severe left ventricular systolic dysfunction (defined as ejection fraction <30%). Coronary angiogram showed single vessel disease in 17%, double vessel disease in 40%, and triple vessel disease in 32% and left main disease in 11%. The majority of the patients (93.6%) underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), among them 23 (36.5%) underwent primary PCI. In-hospital mortality was 52.4% in this study. Conclusions: CS in AMI patients presenting to a tertiary hospital in Oman have high in-hospital mortality despite the majority undergoing PCI. Even though the in-hospital mortality is comparable to other studies and registries, there is an urgent need to determine the causes and find any remedies to provide better care for such patients, specifically concentrating on the early transfer of patients from regional hospitals for early PCI
