oai:ojs.ijfaas.com:article/2In present Research work, the mathanolic extract of garlic was incorporated in locally developed Psyllium based edible coating for its application on mandarin. Different concentrations of the extract were used in the coating and quality of the fruit was monitored during storage at room temperature. The results indicated that there was least change (increase) in brix, weight loss, brix/acid ratio, pH and acidity of the fruit during storage studies. The fungal contamination was effectively controlled due to incorporation of garlic extracts at a rate of 6-8%. On the basis of these results it was concluded that the garlic extracts can be used in psyllium based edible coating and it has antifungal significant antifungal potential but at relatively higher concentrations (>6%)

The Validity Of 75gms OGTT For Detection Of GDM Keeping 100gms OGTT As Gold Standard

Objective: To determine the validity of 75gms (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test) OGTT for the detection of GDM keeping 100gms OGTT as the gold standard. Methodology: This was a Cross-sectional validation study done at the Mother and Child Health Centre, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad. The duration of the study was Six months from the approval of the synopsis. Data was collected from March 2019 to September 2019. Informed consent for participating in the study was taken from all 205 patients. The patients' bio data along with the hospital registration number was entered pro forma. The patients were assessed initially by History taking and examination. All pregnant women underwent a 75g oral glucose test in the 2nd trimester at 24-28 weeks of gestation. For this, the patients were sent to the MCH laboratory with overnight fasting where FBS was taken and they were given a 75 g glucose drink. Their blood sample was taken at 1-hour and 2-hour interval. Two or more elevated values out of the 3 blood samples were sufficient to diagnose GDM. Laboratory reports were reviewed and data was entered in the performa (attached) by the researcher. All the diagnosed patients were further evaluated for a 100g OGTT dose at the MCH laboratory with overnight fasting. Their FBS was studied and women were given a 100 g glucose drink and blood samples were drawn at an interval of 1, 2 and 3 hours respectively. Out of the 4 blood samples, two or more elevated values were sufficient to diagnose GDM. Lab reports were entered in the Performa. Results: From a total of 205 patients, the sensitivity and specificity of OGTT-75 g for diagnosing GDM were 83.02% and 82.83%. However, positive predictive and negative predictive value for OGTT-75 g was 83.81% and 82% respectively. However, the overall diagnostic accuracy of OGTT-75 g was 82.93%. Conclusion: Results of this study showed that 75 gms OGTT is highly sensitive (83.02%) and specific (82.83%) for the detection/diagnosis of gestational DM. Advanced screening and diagnosis of gestational DM, and its effective treatment not only inhibit adverse perinatal and maternal outcomes but also save the lives of both child and mother from diabetes in future

Introduction: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is the most important lifesaving technique in several emergency situations such as cardiac arrest. In future, being part of health care professionals, pharmacy students are deemed to possess basic skills and expertise which are required to perform CPR. Objective: To access the knowledge of cardiopulmonary among pharmacy students of Mirpur Azad Jammu & Kashmir. Methods: It was a questionnaire-based, descriptive cross-sectional study, conducted among 4th and 5th year students of two Pharmacy institutes of Mirpur AJ&K from November 2018 to January 2019. A pre-tested questionnaire from previous study was used to collect data. It comprised of 13 dichotomous questions with “Yes/No” options, regarding knowledge of CPR. Descriptive statistics was used to unfold the demographic characteristics. Inferential statistics (Kruskal Wallis and Man Whitney) tests were used for evaluating difference between dependent continuous variables and independent variables and Chi-square was applied to determine difference between grouped variables. P-value of less than 0.05 is considered significant. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 20. Result: Overall, 131 out of 150(response rate= 92%) students participated in current study. Gender distribution among the participants was almost equal with 66 males (50.4%) males and 65 (49.6%) females took part in current study. Participants of the age group 21-23 years (n=88, 67.2%) were dominant. Only few students (n=23, 17.6%) reported to have taken training in CPR previously. Eighty-eight (66.7%) had average knowledge of CPR. No significant differences among male and female, 4th and 5th year students of both the institutes were found. Conclusion: The study revealed that knowledge level of CPR is adequate in most of the students of pharmacy. However, further improvements are required to perform CPR in an efficient manner. Thus, training in CPR should be mandatory in the pharmacy curriculum

Effects of water extracts of apple and pomegranate peel on the quality of orange squash

Punica granatum (pomegranate) and Malus domestica (apple) are rich source of bioactive compounds i.e. phenolics components, anthocyanins and tannins that can be potential preservative agents. The aim of the present research plan was to evaluate the quality characteristics of orange squash after addition of aqueous extracts of apple and pomegranate peels. For this purpose aqueous extracts of pomegranate and apple peels were added in orange squash and then the final product was examined for physiochemical and sensory attributes during storage. Results of current study demonstrated that physico-chemical parameters of orange squash significantly changed with the storage period in all the treatments in such a way that total soluble solids (°Brix) were gradually decreased but the acidity increased. Sensory examination result of orange squash revealed that color, flavor and taste were decreased with the passage of time in all the treatments but preservative and 100% apple peel extract were upto acceptable level. Whereas 50% preservative and 50% pomegranate extract and 100% pomegranate extract were highly rejected.</p

Introducing adaptive machine learning technique for solving short-term hydrothermal scheduling with prohibited discharge zones

    Get PDF
The short-term hydrothermal scheduling (STHTS) problem has paramount importance in an interconnected power system. Owing to an operational research problem, it has been a basic concern of power companies to minimize fuel costs. To solve STHTS, a cascaded topology of four hydel generators with one equivalent thermal generator is considered. The problem is complex and non-linear and has equality and inequality constraints, including water discharge rate constraint, power generation constraint of hydel and thermal power generators, power balance constraint, reservoir storage constraint, initial and end volume constraint of water reservoirs, and hydraulic continuity constraint. The time delays in the transport of water from one reservoir to the other are also considered. A supervised machine learning (ML) model is developed that takes the solution of the STHTS problem without PDZ, by any metaheuristic technique, as input and outputs an optimized solution to STHTS with PDZ and valve point loading (VPL) effect. The results are quite promising and better compared to the literature. The versatility and effectiveness of the proposed approach are tested by applying it to the previous works and comparing the cost of power generation given by this model with those in the literature. A comparison of results and the monetary savings that could be achieved by using this approach instead of using only metaheuristic algorithms for PDZ and VPL are also given. The slipups in the VPL case in the literature are also addressed
