    Geological Age and Structure of the Hina Limestone, Okayama Prefecture, Southwest Japan

    The geologic structure of the Carboniferous Hina Limestone exposed at Hina, near Nariwa, Okayama Prefecture, is described with the aid of subsurface data obtained from boring cores, and the geological age is discussed from the standpoint of brachiopod fauna. The Hina limestone forms a complicated folding structure for the most part overturned towards the south, and is marked off by thrust-faults from the northern non-calcareous Permian rocks and the southern Upper Triassic strata. The axial planes of folding, as well as the thrust-planes, seem to incline steeply in a deeper part and then become nearly horizontal upwards. The writers are inclined to consider that the limestone is not a "Klippe" but a mass squeezed out or injected from the deep-seated autochthonous complex. Brachiopods from the Hina limestone and the neighbouring Shodera limestone are classified into two faunal types: the one is characterized by Spirifer sp. aff. S. besnossovae ABRAMOV, Schizophoria sp. aff. S. re-supinata (MARTIN), Syringothyris sp., etc., of which the first is most predominant, and the other by the abun-dance of Striatifera striata (FISCHER), with Schizophoria sp. aff. S. resupinata (MARTIN), Phricodothyris insolita GEORGE, etc. The former is distributed in the Endothyra zone, the lowest foraminiferal zone of the limestone, and the latter in the overlying Eostaffella—Millerella zone. It may be concluded that the Spirifer sp. aff. S. besnossovae fauna is assigned to the early Visean in age and the Striatifera striata fauna to the late Visean

    Universal quantum computation with temporal-mode bilayer square lattices

    We propose an experimental design for universal continuous-variable quantum computation that incorporates recent innovations in linear-optics-based continuous-variable cluster state generation and cubic-phase gate teleportation. The first ingredient is a protocol for generating the bilayer-square-lattice cluster state (a universal resource state) with temporal modes of light. With this state, measurement-based implementation of Gaussian unitary gates requires only homodyne detection. Second, we describe a measurement device that implements an adaptive cubic-phase gate, up to a random phase-space displacement.     Demonstration of a Controlled-Phase Gate for Continuous-Variable One-Way Quantum Computation

    We experimentally demonstrate a controlled-phase gate for continuous variables in a fully measurement-based fashion. In our scheme, the two independent input states of the gate, encoded in two optical modes, are teleported into a four-mode Gaussian cluster state. As a result, one of the entanglement links present in the initial cluster state appears in the two unmeasured output modes as the corresponding entangling gate acting on the input states. The genuine quantum character of this gate becomes manifest and is verified through the presence of entanglement at the output for a product two-mode coherent input state. By combining our controlled-phase gate with the recently reported module for universal single-mode Gaussian operations [R. Ukai et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 240504 (2011)], it is possible to implement universal Gaussian operations on arbitrary multi-mode quantum optical states in form of a fully measurement-based one-way quantum computation.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Interactions between migraine and tension-type headache and alcohol drinking, alcohol flushing, and hangover in Japanese

    The aim of the study was to investigate associations between headache types and alcohol drinking, alcohol flushing, and hangover. Alcohol consumption is inhibited by the presence of inactive aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 (ALDH2) whose carriers are susceptible to alcohol flushing and hangovers. We conducted a cross-sectional study of the 2,577 subjects (men/women: 1,018/1,559) who reported having ever experienced headaches unrelated to common colds and alcohol hangovers among 5,408 (2,778/2,630) Tokyo health checkup examinees. We used a questionnaire inquiring about current and past facial flushing after drinking a glass of beer which identifies the presence of inactive ALDH2 with a sensitivity and specificity of approximately 90%. Based on ICHD-II criteria migraine was diagnosed in 419 (75/344) subjects, and tension-type headache (TTH) in 613 (249/364). We classified the headaches of the remaining 1,545 (694/851) of headaches sufferers into the category “other headaches (OH)”. The migraineurs drank alcohol less frequently than the subjects with TTH among current/past alcohol flushers and than the subjects with OH regardless of flushing category. No such difference in drinking frequency was observed between TTH and OH. Current/past flushers drank alcohol less frequently than never flushers, and the likelihood that male migraineurs would avoid alcohol drinking than men with TTH or OH was stronger among current/past flushers than among never flushers. Flushers and women were more susceptible to hangover than never flushers and men, respectively, regardless of headache type. Among never flushers, women with migraine were more susceptible to hangover than women with OH. The difference in alcohol sensitivity may partly explain less alcohol consumption by migraineurs

    We examined whether treatment with amodiaquine, a potent inhibitor of histamine N-methyltransferase protects mice from Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes)-primed and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced hepatitis. The subcutaneous injection of amodiaquine (2 and 5 mg/kg) significantly increased the histamine levels in the liver in comparison to saline treated mice. Pretreatment with amodiaquine also improved the survival rate of the hepatitis mice, and this improvement was partially associated with the decrease in serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). Amodiaquine partially suppressed increases of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha in the serum and TNF-alpha mRNA expression in the liver, whereas the expression of interleukin (IL)-18, interferon (IFN)-gamma and IL-12 in the liver was not changed by amodiaquine treatment. In conclusion, the present findings suggested that the elevation of endogenous histamine by amodiaquine may thus play a protective role through the regulation of TNF-alpha production in endotoxin-induced hepatic injury mice

    Generation of one-million-mode continuous-variable cluster state by unlimited time-domain multiplexing

    In recent quantum optical continuous-variable experiments, the number of fully inseparable light modes has drastically increased by introducing a multiplexing scheme either in the time domain or in the frequency domain. Here, modifying the time-domain multiplexing experiment reported in Nature Photonics 7, 982 (2013), we demonstrate successive generation of fully inseparable light modes for more than one million modes. The resulting multi-mode state is useful as a dual-rail CV cluster state. We circumvent the previous problem of optical phase drifts, which has limited the number of fully inseparable light modes to around ten thousands, by continuous feedback control of the optical system.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure

    Factor Analysis of Damage to Small Earth Dams Due to the 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu Earthquake

    Damage to small earth dams due to the Hyogoken-Namby Earthquake of January 17, 1995 is discussed. Investigations of 266 dams were conducted in the area where the JMA seismic intensity was 5 or higher, and which were located within about 50 kilometers from the earthquake source fault. Small earth dams suffered various forms of damage such as longitudinal cracking, transverse cracking, settlement and deformation of the dam body. The damage to small earth dams was classified into five grades from no damage to severe damage such as a complete failure. The damage grade was analyzed by several factors such as distance from the fault, topography and geology, intensity of quake motion, direction of dam axis against the fault, year of completion, and height of dam.
