The compact curves of an intermediate Kato surface $S$ form a basis of $H^2(S,\mathbb Q)$. We present a way to compute the associated rational coefficients of the first Chern class $c_1(S)$. We get in particular a simple geometric obstruction for $c_1(S)$ to be an integral class, or equivalently index$(S)=1$. We also find an expression for the exponents of the contracting germ of $S$ in terms of self-intersection numbers of the compact curves.Comment: 25 page

Do Currency Regimes Matter in the 21st Century? An Overview

This paper selectively reviews the recent literature on currency regimes in Europe, the Americas, and East Asia. We argue that, given the global interdependence among today's economies, currency regimes should always be evaluated in relation to monetary policy, fiscal policy, structural policies, and the working of financial markets. Thus, currency regimes do matter and are a relevant concern for policymakers.

Sharing the Risk of Settlement Failure: Synopsis

Two policies toward payments-system risk are common, but superficially appear to be contradictory. One policy is to restrict the exposure to risk generated by one participant to other participants who are, by one measure or another, directly concerned with the risky participant. The other policy is to provide a "safety net," typically provided by government and funded by taxes collected from all participants and even from non-participants, to share losses due to "systemic risk." In this paper, we provide a model in which both of these policies can be constituents of an economically efficient regime of payments-risk management.

The process of development of infant-nursery teacher attachment: An examination on their interactions by using qualitative data

The purpose of this study was to examine the processes of development and change of attachment between an infant and his nursery teachers in detail by qualitative data. The subject of the study was an infant who had developed insecure attachment among his initial attachment figure. He was observed for 9 months (July-March). In the first term (July-August), he showed attachment behavior to several teachers. The interactions between the infant and each teacher were analyzed. There were several interactions by each teacher, and the responses of the infant to each teacher were also different
