HEALTH COMMUNICATION ANALYSIS OF DOCTOR-PATIENT RELATIONSHIP AND PATIENTS’ HEALTH BEHAVIOUR IN SOUTH WEST NIGERIA

Communication in doctor-patient relationship has undergone a transition over time from doctor-dominance to patient-centred approach. Unfortunately, the patient-centred approach adopted today has not positively influenced the health behaviour of patients. For this, health communication scholars wonder if there is any difference between patient-centred and the doctor-dominance approach. The study adopted the descriptive survey research method, using two sets of questionnaires for data collection from patients and doctors. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 120 respondents for the study. Data collected were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages and chi-square technique. Communication in doctor-patient relationship had significant influence on patients’ follow-up appointments (χ2 = 112.867) and compliance to prescribed drugs (χ2 = 48.333).   Communication in doctor-patient   relationship had significant influence on patients’ choice of the hospital (χ2= 44.083) and  consumption of balanced or specific diet (χ2 = 61.350). Communication in doctor-patient relationship had significant influence on patients’ exercising regularly (χ2 =18.80).The study concluded that doctor-patient relationship in health communication influences patients’ health behaviour in South West Nigeria. It is therefore recommended that doctors should apply an integrated/ synergetic approach in communicating with their patients and that audience-specific social media platforms should be utilized to complement the doctor-patient communication for more effective result. &nbsp

Causal discourse structures in medical referral materials: a humanistic insight

Humanistic studies on medical causality from language studies have hardly explored how causality is constructed in medical referral materials, which is the research gap this study intends to fill. For data, forty completed National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) medical referral forms, comprising 842 words and medical signs, were purposively selected from a healthcare provider in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria, and subjected to discourse analysis with insights from the causal coherence categories of Mann/Thompson’s (1987) Rhetorical Structure Theory. The paper identified two causal relations/structures – nonvolitional cause and nonvolitional result – in the data. Each structure reveals the primacy of diagnosis among the medical processes of diagnosing, investigating and treating or referring. The diagnosis proposition is primed as the consequence of pathophysiological causation in a diagnostic schema; while in the medical referral process, it is elevated as the causation for a medical referral, for instance for further specialist review and management, in a medical-referral schema. The construal of the semantic parameter of non-volition in the coherence relations is aided by the reality that illness is not intended, except caused by self-harm or suicide. The relations were signalled by four signal types, which are genre, semantic, syntactic, and semiotic; and six specific signals – mapping, lexical overlap, lexical chain, adverbials, semiotic overlap, and lexical-semiotic chain. These are implicit signals that complement the concise presentation of the medical processes. To conclude, this research provides the causal modeling of some medical processes, which highlights the prominence of diagnosis in medical referrals

This study examined content of YouTube videos on cassava production and processing posted in Nigeria between 2009 and 2019.  Purposive sampling method was used in selecting 155 YouTube videos with cassava production and processing contents. Primary data on video source, content, duration, quality, number of views, subscribers, likes, comments, presentation format and year of upload were obtained by watching these videos. Data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, means, standard deviation. Many (53.5%) of the videos were on processing of cassava, while most (80.0%) of the videos were relatively recent (2014 - 2019). Private individuals (38.7%) and media houses (34.2%) were the main sources of videos on cassava production and processing on YouTube. The major content of the video was on agronomic practices in cassava production (12.9%) and value addition (11.0%). Also, 66.0% of the videos had video description (descriptive texts), 36.8% had mobilizing information while 52.3%  had a video quality of 720p. Furthermore, 72.9% of the videos had between 1 to 7 minute runtime and these videos had more likes than dislikes with mean values of 92.8 and 5.6 respectively. The mean number of views, subscribers and comments were 11,138.1, 179,537.6 and 13.6, respectively. The presentation patterns in the videos were in form of news (24.5%) and documentary (20.0%). YouTube videos on cassava production and processing were well viewed with a substantial number of subscribers. More YouTube videos on cassava production and processing should be produced with varied contents by different stakeholders in the agricultural sector

Communicative Competence of Science Students: An Illustration with UNAAB Communicative Competence of Science Students: An Illustration with UNAAB 1

Abstract Over the years, many reasons have been adduced for students' lack of communicative competence at tertiary institutions even after they have taken proficiency courses to develop their communicative ability. Lecturers are sometimes, accused of not designing a syllabus which meets students' actual needs and also for not applying appropriate teaching pedagogy, thereby creating, in some cases, a gap between communicative competence and actual performance. This paper explicates some of the manifestations of these, using data from two sets of students' results from 100 level to 200 level. The paper raises the question as to whether the results reflect the expected achievement of the objective of the courses and the implications for communicative competence

    No full text
The study was conducted with a view to establishing the extent to which agricultural researchers, extension agents and rural farmers perceived the use of ICT for transformation of the Nigeria’s agricultural system. A total of 465 respondents, consisting of 113 researchers and 146 extension agents were randomly selected, using the available sampling frame. A non-probability point of saturation method was used to select 224 rural farmers. Questionnaires and interview guides were used to collect data from the agricultural workers on their socioeconomic characteristics and perceptions of ICT usage for agricultural Development. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results indicated that the agricultural researchers had a very high perception of ICT usage for agricultural development. The extension agents and rural farmers had a high perception of ICT usage. The regression result showed that researchers’ and extension agents’ levels of education significantly influenced their perception of ICT usage for agricultural activities. Rural farmers’ perception of ICT usage for agricultural activities was significantly influenced by their age. The ANOVA test of differences among the agricultural workers’ perception of ICT usage for agricultural development showed no significant difference. It was concluded that with necessary ICT facilities in place, the agricultural researchers, extension agents and rural farmers, are all likely to harness the potentials of communication-driven technologies for enhancement of agricultural development in southwest Nigeria
