'Tough'-constructions and their derivation
This article addresses the syntax of the notorious 'tough' (-movement) construction (TC) in English. TCs exhibit a range of apparently contradictory empirical properties suggesting that their derivation involves the application of both A-movement and A'-movement operations. Given that within previous
Principles and Parameters models TCs have remained “unexplained and in principle unexplainable” (Holmberg 2000: 839) due to incompatibility with constraints on theta-assignment, locality, and Case, this article argues that the phase-based implementation of the Minimalist program (Chomsky 2000,
2001, 2004) permits a reanalysis of null wh-operators capable of circumventing the previous theoretical difficulties. Essentially, 'tough'-movement consists of A-moving a constituent out of a “complex” null operator which has already undergone A'-movement, a “smuggling” construction in the terms of Collins (2005a,b

We had the practical participation for the taking care of the severely mentally retarded at the AICHI Prefectural Colony in this summer, Through this practice we aimed to clarify the significance of the being as human for them. Each of all members joined to relate with each of the retarded individually for five days in this practice. We tried to note our experience of such a intensive participation as they are, and it was described by each of our members what sort of pre-information about them we had got before the practice, how we had felt when we met them at the first time and how we had moved and served for them after that. We are now convinced of this kind of experience have let us change our primary attitude for the severely mentally retarded and that the deeper and the more open such a experience of our participation with them is, the more they grow up.国立情報学研究所で電子化したコンテンツを使用している
