Measuring the Degree of International Harmony in Selected Accounting Measurement Practices

    Get PDF
The I-index developed by Van der Tas and chi square tests suggested by Tay and Parker are used to quantify and assess the degree of harmony in selected accounting measurement practices of large companies from France, Germany, Japan, the UK, and the US. The results indicate significant differences in accounting for inventory, fixed assets, and investments among the countries. The 3 sub-topics that exhibited a high degree of harmony were the treatment of gains or losses on the disposal of fixed assets, short-term investments and long-term investments, a reflection of the preference of regulators and companies in the different countries for taking disposal gains and losses to income as they occur. Depreciation and inventory costing methods had the lowest I-index scores respectively, suggesting that the level of international harmony in these 2 basic accounting measurement practices is fairly low. It was found that the disclosure of information on accounting policies, even on fundamental accounting measurement methods such as inventory costing methods, tends to be quite low

This research was objectively carried out to assess the current status of large cardamom production, major climatic induced impact on production and challenges faced by farmers of Dhankuta district and soil fertility status. The local farmers were categorized as large, medium and small. The farmers of Majhgaun-4 of Pakhribas municipality and Namjang-6 of Chhattar Jorpati municipality growing large cardamom were selected for this study. The field work was conducted applying stratified random sampling between July to August, 2019.Total 90 questionnaire survey and 2 key informant interview were organized to collect the primary data. Total 20 soil samples were collected from 0-30 cm depth. Besides, monthly data of temperature and rainfall were collected from Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. The result showed that the average household production of large, medium and small farmers of Majhgaun-4 has been decreasing with an average rate of 0.363 ton/ha, 0.088 ton/ha 0.078 ton/ha per year respectively. Mann Kendall’s tau correlation showed that there was a significant relationship of average annual temperature and average temperature of critical season of Pakhribas and Dhankuta station having R values 0.733 and 0.643 respectively. The rainfall in both the station Pakhribas and Dhankuta , was decreasing with the rate of -2.696 and -8.618 mm/year. The relation between average household production and average temperature of critical season of Majhgaun was significant. The soil fertility of Majhgaun was the best. The principal component analysis showed that the highest challenges faced by farmers was disease and followed by drought. This research will be useful for large cardamom experts. Keywords: Climate change, large cardamom, productivity, soil fertility status

Public policy, political connections, and effective tax rates: Longitudinal evidence from Malaysia

    Get PDF
This study examines the link between effective tax rates (ETR) and political connections in developing economies. The political connections explanation is informed by the observation that developing economies tend to be “relationship-based” rather than “market-based” capitalisms. Two proxies of political patronage are developed and applied to a group of Malaysian firms over a 10-year period. We find firms with political connections pay tax at significantly lower effective rates than other firms. Our results suggest that political connections are an important determinant of ETR in relationship-based economies

Exploring differences in social disclosures internationally: A stakeholder perspective

    Get PDF
Country of origin is considered to be an important determinant of the level and type of corporate social disclosure. In this paper, we use stakeholder theory to explain differ- ences in social disclosure among countries. We argue that the manner in which the role of a corporation and its stakeholders is defined in a society will affect the extent and quality of corporate social disclosure (CSD) in annual reports. Our findings based on a content analysis of 1998 and 1999 annual reports for 32 Norwegian/Danish companies and 26 US companies in the electric power generation industry, lend support to the stakeholder explanation for observed international differences in CSD

Cuphea carthagenensis (Jacquin) J.F. Macbride, a native of South America, is recorded for the first time from Mechinagar municipality of south‑eastern Nepal. This weed has already been in the neighboring north‑east region of India since the 1950s and might have recently spread into south‑eastern Nepal where it is colonizing riparian habitats. We provide a detailed taxonomic account, as well as the distribution, major habitat, and invasion status of C. carthagenensis

Central Retinal Artery Occlusion Associated with Atrial Septal Defect: A Case Report

Introduction: Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is characterized by sudden obstruction of the arterial blood flow in the retinal circulation with consequent ischemic damage to the retina resulting in vision loss. An interesting case of unilateral CRAO associated with atrial septal defect (ASD) in a young female is reported here. Case: A young female presented to emergency department with history of sudden and painless loss of vision in her right eye for one day. Her visual acuity at the time of presentation was perception of light in right eye and 6/6 in left eye. On examination, anterior segments of both the eyes were normal. However, relative afferent pupillary defect was positive in her right eye. On fundus examination, right eye showed pale retina and cherry red spot whereas left eye was unremarkable. Findings were suggestive of right eye CRAO. Ocular massage was done and oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitor was given. Patient was referred to a cardiologist for further evaluation and establishment of the etiology. All tests were within reference limit except a large ASD (secundum type with left to right shunt) with a diameter of 28 mm was revealed on transthoracic echocardiogram. Conclusion: The association between ASD and CRAO is rare. Intracardiac shunts through defect may predispose the disease. Detailed cardiac evaluation is mandatory to rule out possible causes to prevent ocular or systemic embolic events and associated morbidity

The impact of corporate social disclosure on investment behavior: A cross-national study

    Get PDF
We examine the impact of corporate social disclosure (CSD) on investment behavior in the US, Japan, France, and Sweden using stakeholder theory as the underlying framework for our analysis. We find that there is a significant difference in investors’ reactions to CSD across countries. Using a unique stakeholder scale we also find that these reactions are related to the investors’ stakeholder orientation. These findings provide insight into cross-national dif- ferences in the perceived relevance of CSD to investors

Background. Bone metastasis is very common in the advanced stage of numerous carcinomas. In penile carcinoma, lymph nodes metastasis is somehow common but it is very rare reported to be secondary from penile cancer. till the date, there are only few cases of penis carcinoma reported bone metastasis in literature worldwide.Case Presentation. Herein, We presented a 51-year-old Nepalese male with squamous cell carcinoma of penis. computed tomography (ct) scan of the patient revealed that there was carcinoma involving glans penis and precure with bilateral external & internal inguinal lymphadenopathies. After then, the patient was under gone for partial penectomy and bilateral inguinal lymphadenectomy and complete 6-cycle chemotherapy. After one year of treatment, patient developed thigh pain and headache and he advised to have magnetic Resonance imaging (mRi) of brain, 99mTc-MDP whole body bone scan and ct scan of pelvis and thigh. The examination report reveals that there was a sclerotic change in vertex of skull bone and moderate 99mTc-MDP uptake in right proximal shaft of femur just below the neck d/d metastasis. The histopathological examination of the true cut biopsy taken from the lesion of the femur showed metastatic keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma which is rare case of femoral shaft bone metastasis secondary from penile carcinoma. Then patient was sent for surgical reconstruction of femur. Based on the case studies review femur shaft bone metastasis from penile cancer is extremely rare.Conclusion. The best of our knowledge; this is the first early detected bone metastases to shaft of the femur in a patient with penile cancer. early diagnosis helps to radical treatment as well as palliative treatment. surgery is the preferred option of the treatments, especially for metastatic foci in the long bones.

Introduction: Frozen section helps in rapid intra-operative diagnosis. It is commonly used during surgical procedures to detect malignancy so that modifications of surgery can be decided at the time of surgery on the table. Frozen section is also performed for evaluation of surgical margins and detection of lymph node metastasis. In addition it is applied for detection of unknown pathological processes. The objective of this study was to assess the accuracy of frozen section diagnosis in comparison to gold standard histopathological diagnosis and to find concordance and discordance rate of frozen section with histopathological report. Methods: This was a cross sectional study of 41 frozen section samples done in the department of pathology of BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences from September 2014 to August 2015. All frozen section samples with their permanent tissue samples sent for final histopathological evaluation were included in the study. Results: The overall accuracy of frozen section diagnosis was 97%. The sensitivity was 94%, specificity was 87%, positive predictive value was 90% and negative predictive value was 93%. The concordance rate was 90.2% and the discordance rate was 9.8%. Conclusions: The results of frozen section varied in different organ systems and the common cause of discrepancy in our study were the gross sampling error and the interpretational error
