    A method for Selecting Scenes and Emotion-based Descriptions for a Robot's Diary

    In this study, we examined scene selection methods and emotion-based descriptions for a robot's daily diary. We proposed a scene selection method and an emotion description method that take into account semantic and affective information, and created several types of diaries. Experiments were conducted to examine the change in sentiment values and preference of each diary, and it was found that the robot's feelings and impressions changed more from date to date when scenes were selected using the affective captions. Furthermore, we found that the robot's emotion generally improves the preference of the robot's diary regardless of the scene it describes. However, presenting negative or mixed emotions at once may decrease the preference of the diary or reduce the robot's robot-likeness, and thus the method of presenting emotions still needs further investigation.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, ROMAN 202

    Automatic Diary Generation System including Information on Joint Experiences between Humans and Robots

    In this study, we propose an automatic diary generation system that uses information from past joint experiences with the aim of increasing the favorability for robots through shared experiences between humans and robots. For the verbalization of the robot's memory, the system applies a large-scale language model, which is a rapidly developing field. Since this model does not have memories of experiences, it generates a diary by receiving information from joint experiences. As an experiment, a robot and a human went for a walk and generated a diary with interaction and dialogue history. The proposed diary achieved high scores in comfort and performance in the evaluation of the robot's impression. In the survey of diaries giving more favorable impressions, diaries with information on joint experiences were selected higher than diaries without such information, because diaries with information on joint experiences showed more cooperation between the robot and the human and more intimacy from the robot.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, IAS-1

    Association between sleep habits/disorders and emotional/behavioral problems among Japanese children

    Actual sleep status and the association between sleep habits/disorders and emotional/behavioral problems among children in the development stage have not been fully clarified. A questionnaire survey was conducted on the sleep habits/disorders (Brief Child Sleep Questionnaire; BCSQ) and emotional/behavioral problems (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire; SDQ) of 87,548 children enrolled in ordinary classes in nine grade levels from the first grade of elementary school to the third grade of junior high school from December 2009 to April 2010. As school grade increased, children\u27s bedtimes were delayed and sleep duration was reduced by 2.0 h over the nine grade levels. Based on the BCSQ, 18.3% of children were judged to have some type of sleep disorder, and about 30% to 40% of children had sleep symptoms at bedtime, during sleep, and at wake time. Multiple regression analysis showed that emotional and behavioral problems were associated with presence of any sleep symptom, longer sleep latency, and longer awake time after sleep onset, whereas total sleep time was not. Sleep symptoms at wake time were most strongly associated with emotional and behavioral problems. Status of sleep habits/disorders should be considered when interpreting emotional/behavioral problems in school-age children

    The Shock State of Itokawa Sample

    One of the fundamental aspects of any astromaterial is its shock history, since this factor elucidates critical historical events, and also because shock metamorphism can alter primary mineralogical and petrographic features, and reset chronologies [1]. Failure to take shock history into proper account during characterization can result in seriously incorrect conclusions being drawn. Thus the Hayabusa Preliminary Examination Team (HASPET) made shock stage determination of the Itokawa samples a primary goal [2]. However, we faced several difficulties in this particular research. The shock state of ordinary chondrite materials is generally determined by simple optical petrographic observation of standard thin sections. The Itokawa samples available to the analysis team were mounted into plastic blocks, were polished on only one side, and were of non-standard and greatly varying thickness, all of which significantly complicated petrographic analysis but did not prevent it. We made an additional estimation of the sample shock state by a new technique for this analysis - electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) in addition to standard petrographic techniques. We are also investigating the crystallinity of Itokawa olivine by Synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD)

    In dialysis patients, it is essence to take nutrient amounts approximately such as energy, protein, salt, water, phosphorus, and potassium. However, since many dialysis patients are elderly and difficult to cook at home every day, they often utilize a commercially available lunch box. So, we aimed this study to estimate nutritional value from the nutritional label, and to measure total phosphorus content in 5 types of lunch box. We found that these lunch boxes contained almost within the recommended amount of potassium and phosphorous, while they contained excess energy, protein and salt amounts. So, when dialysis patients utilize commercially available lunch boxes, they should pay attention especially to a risk of excess dietary salt intake

    Dynamic Regulation of Myosin Light Chain Phosphorylation by Rho-kinase

    Myosin light chain (MLC) phosphorylation plays important roles in various cellular functions such as cellular morphogenesis, motility, and smooth muscle contraction. MLC phosphorylation is determined by the balance between activities of Rho-associated kinase (Rho-kinase) and myosin phosphatase. An impaired balance between Rho-kinase and myosin phosphatase activities induces the abnormal sustained phosphorylation of MLC, which contributes to the pathogenesis of certain vascular diseases, such as vasospasm and hypertension. However, the dynamic principle of the system underlying the regulation of MLC phosphorylation remains to be clarified. Here, to elucidate this dynamic principle whereby Rho-kinase regulates MLC phosphorylation, we developed a mathematical model based on the behavior of thrombin-dependent MLC phosphorylation, which is regulated by the Rho-kinase signaling network. Through analyzing our mathematical model, we predict that MLC phosphorylation and myosin phosphatase activity exhibit bistability, and that a novel signaling pathway leading to the auto-activation of myosin phosphatase is required for the regulatory system of MLC phosphorylation. In addition, on the basis of experimental data, we propose that the auto-activation pathway of myosin phosphatase occurs in vivo. These results indicate that bistability of myosin phosphatase activity is responsible for the bistability of MLC phosphorylation, and the sustained phosphorylation of MLC is attributed to this feature of bistability
