    STUDENTS’ WRITING ABILITY IN PARAPHRASING NEWS ITEM

    AbstractWriting is one of skills that has to be mastered by students because by writing the writers can express ideas and thought into a good written. In SMA/MA, students often get difficulties in rewriting or paraphrasing the news item that they have read by using their own words. This matter is caused of student’s lack of vocabulary, structure, relating sentence to other sentences, also that they do not understand about the elements of the paragraph that builds a text, and they do not understand a generic structure of news item text. This research took the population of the tenth grade students of MAs Daarul Hikmah Tangerang by using cluster sampling. There are 4 (nine) classes of the tenth grade. Total population is 140 students. One of the classes was the sample. After analyzing the data, the researcher got the result of the students writing ability in paraphrasing news item on the tenth grade was Fair (50.86). There is no student got excellent category, 3 students got good (8.57) category, 20 students got fair (57.14) category, and 12 students got poor (34.29) category.Key word : Writing Ability, News Item, Tex

    Investigating the Utilization of TikTok Application to Improve Nursing Students’ English Speaking Skills

    In this era of the 5.0 industrial revolution, the importance of communication skills in English is becoming more pronounced, including in the field of nursing. Speaking is one of the four core skills for effective communication in the English language. The purpose of this paper is to describe nursing students’ experiences of using TikTok Application, a short-video sharing platform, as an alternative tool to help them practicing their speaking skills. The subjects of this study were 31 second-semester students of Nursing Study Program at a private University in Tangerang. The method used in this research was quasi-experimental approach with one group pretest-posttest design. The findings revealed that using the TikTok application can help students to improve their speaking skills significantly. In addition, they also gave positive responses toward using TikTok in learning English language as it could make them more relaxed and enjoyed while practicing their speaking skills

    IDENTIFICATION OF STUDENT’S LEXICAL ERROR IN TRANSLATING ENGLISH TEXT INTO INDONESIAN

    This research identifies students’ lexical errors in translating English text into Indonesian at Open University (Universitas Terbuka). The lexicon is essential in a translation. A good and acceptable translation should be able to successfully render the message of the source language into the target language by using the appropriate lexicon. The incorrect lexical choice will distort the source language's message. A translation test was administered to 35 students as part of the data collection process. The finding shows some students wrongly order the word in a sentence as the  result  of  word  by  word  translation  and  they  translate  it  using  dictionary and translation  machine like  Google  translate  so  that  it  still  has  errors  in  sentence  or  word. In addition, some of the students translate English text into Indonesian word by word. So that the translation did not correspond with the meaning of the text. Even though they used a dictionary, but they did not understand the text perfectly

    THE EFFECT OF ANAGRAM GAME ON THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY AT SMPN 3 BALARAJA

    This research was aimed to know the effect of Anagram Game on students’ vocabulary mastery. This research used quantitative method, with quasi-experimental design. This research was conducted in SMPN 3 Balaraja. The number of the sample of the research was 70 students of eighth grade. The instrument in this research was divided into two steps of test, namely pre-test and post-test. Based on the criteria of hypothesis test that if tcount ttable then H1 is accepted, it means there is any significant difference of students’ result of learning vocabulary mastery between students in experiment class who were taught by using Anagram Game and students in control who were taught by using Anagram Game. The result of the calculation was t – count of ɑ = 5% was 2.04, and for t – table was 1.99. It proved that Anagram Game gave effect on students’ vocabulary mastery

    THE CHALLENGES OF ENGLISH TEACHERS IN TEACHING ONLINE ENGLISH BY USING EDULEARNING APPLICATION AT SMP MUHAMMADIYAH 4

    This study aims to find out about the challenges of English teachers in teaching online English by using the EduLearning application, where the study examines what kind of challenges that the English teachers face during the online course using EduLearning application and also how do they deal with the challenges itself, There are two objectives in this study, they are 1) To know what are the challenges that English teachers face in online teaching using EduLearning application. 2) To know how do English Teachers deal with the challenges in online teaching using EduLearning at SMP Muhammadiyah 4. The researcher used data collection techniques, namely interviews and questionnaires. The interview is an online interview that was asked to three English teachers with the same questions of each, and the questionnaire was given through Google form. The first question shows that there are five challenges that were encountered by the English Teachers by using the EduLearning application, namely internet connection, media, lack of interaction between students and teachers, limited ability, and technical problems. And for the second question shows that there are four solutions, namely, school-provided computer laboratory to be used by students, the variation in teaching online, the shifting application, and the need for training.Keywords: Online teaching, EduLearning application, Challenges

    Language Politeness in Students' Thesis Guidance

    This study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of the phenomenon of Language Politeness in Student Thesis Guidance of students of the English Education Study Program, FKIP University of Muhammadiyah Tangerang. The design of this research is qualitative with phenomenological methods. The data in this study were obtained through recorded speech acts and semistructured interviews with 29 students from Sundanese, Javanese, Betawi and Minang ethnic groups. The results showed that there were 10 forms of acts of courtesy of students, namely the form of praise, orders, requests, approval, giving, invitations, rejection, expressions of gratitude, sympathy, and acceptance speech. Furthermore, the politeness phenomenon that occurs in college student speech is motivated by several factors, i.e., the use of vocabulary, grammar, and direct-indirect sentences, which in turn affect the different views of college students about politeness which are motivated by the culture and environment where they live, the habits of the way of speaking they use in speech, their understanding of the context of speech

    Learning English is the activity for getting the knowledge about English. English should be learned since the beginner level to the advance level. There are some characteristics of students in learning process at classroom, such as they can pay attention to the teacher, and have purpose in learn. It is called Self-Regulated Learning. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative research. The setting of this research is FKIP Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang. There were five classes English Language Department at Fourth Year English Language Department. From five class, there were choosing 30 students for the participant. In choosing the participants the researcher used purposive sampling. The researcher used questionnaire to collect the data, and used peer debriefing to check the trustworthiness of the data. The result showed that process of self-regulated learning that used by students were goal setting, planning, self-motivation, attention control, self-monitoring, help-seeking, and self-evaluation. The highest of total value was goal setting 440, self-monitoring with the total value 420, self-evaluation with the total value 410, self-motivation with the total value 392, help-seeking with the total value 306, planning with the total value 305, and the least is attention control with the total value 300. The highest of total value of self-regulated learning was goal setting. So, it can be concluded that the fourth year students of FKIP Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang had applied the process of self-regulated learning, the most implemented process was goal setting and the least process was attention control.     THE EFFECT OF STUDENTS WRITING SKILLS IN NARRATIVE TEXT THROUGH WEBTOON APPLICATION

    This research aims to find out the significant effect on the students writing skills in narrative text taught using webtoon application at first grade of SMK Teknologi Pilar Bangsa Sepatan. Webtoon Application is acronym from Web and Toon it means website and cartoon. So, Webtoon Application is digital – based illustrated cartoon comics. This research was conducted for 1 month, starting from October 04th to October 25th 2021. The target population in this research is are students of class X OTKP 1 totaling 40 students and X OTKP 2 totaling 42 students with the total number of students in the two classes being 82 students, but the students who were able to collect pre – test and post -test were 74 students (37 student from X OTKP 1 and 37 from X OTKP 2). The research method used is quantitative. The design of this research is a quasi – experimental research to find out the effect of using an effective Webtoon Application to improve students’ ability in writing narrative texts. The data collection technique used a test consisting pre – test and post – test. Pre – test Pre – test was carried out to the experimental class and control class before being given a treatment. Post – test is carried out after being given treatment, namely the experimental class using Webtoon Application and control class didn’t receive or didn’t use Webtoon Application. The results of the research can show that: (1) In the experimental class the average value of the pre – test is 72.30 while the average value of the post – test is 77.43, (2) In the control class the average value of the pre – test was 70.86 while the average value of the post – test was 74.08. In the results of paired ttest, the results show indicate a significant change in the pre – test and post – test values of the experimental class namely sig.2 tailed of 0.000 < 0.05, then H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted so that it can be concludes there is an average difference between pre – test and post – test learning outcomes which means that there is an significance change on the use Webtoon Application in the ability of writing narrative texts

    THE EFFECT OF TIME TOKEN STRATEGY ON THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENT SPEAKING SKILLS AT SMP AL-IJTIHAD 2 KUTABARU

    This study aims to determine the effect of time token strategy to improve students' speaking skills. This research method is a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent design. The study population was the students of SMP Al-Ijtihad 2 Kutabaru. There are four classes consisting of class VIII A, VIII B, VIII C, and VIII D. Consisting of 33 VIII A students, 32 VIII B students, 33 VIII C students, and 33 VIII students. The total population is 131 students. The researcher took several students to be the research sample. Purposive Sampling was chosen as the sampling technique in this study. Consisting of 65 students, class VIII B as the experiment class and VIII C as the control class. The two classes were given different treatment. The experimental class was taught using Time Token Strategy while the control class was taught using conventional methods. The study was started by giving pre-test, treatment, and post-test to both classes. The data from the test were analyzed using the t-test formula at a significant level of 5% (0.05). The results of the pre-test analysis using the t-test formula obtained data that shows tcount 1.934461139 is smaller than ttable 2.00, which means that H0 is accepted. Meanwhile, the post-test results show that tcount 2.64672013 is betterr than ttable 2.00, which means H1 is accepted. Based on the research conducted, it proves that there are significant differences in the results of learning speaking using the Time Token Strategy at SMP Al-Ijtihad 2 Kutabaru, and the Time Token Strategy can make students more active in the learning process.Keywords: Strategy Time Token, Speaking Skill

    AN ANALYSIS ON TEACHING AND LEARNING PROCESS IN ENGLISH CLASS AT SEKOLAH ALAM TANGERANG MEKAR BAKTI JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

    Teaching and learning process is a process that contains a series of actions of teachers and students based on reciprocal relationships that take place in educational situations to achieve certain goals. Nature School is one of the alternative educations that use nature as the main media for student learning. This research aimed to find out the teaching and learning process in English class at Sekolah Alam Mekar Bakti Tangerang. The research questions were: how was the teaching process in English class?; how was the learning process in English class?; what are the advantages and disadvantages of teaching and learning process in Nature School setting. Data collection techniques used by researchers are observation, documentation, and interviews. The researchers used a triangulation method. The results showed that: the teachers applied three stages (pre-instructional stage, instructional stage, and follow-up phase); students experienced three stages in their learning process (receiving information, Information storage, and recalling information); there are some advantages and disadvantages found during the teaching and learning process in Nature School setting
