In the recent times, energy efficiency is an important field in manufacturing and transport sector, mainly due to ecological concerns and ever rising energy prices. Rapid increase in population is causing an energy overload and rise in level of Green House Gases (GHG), which should be dealt in an energy efficient and smart way. We are liv-ing in the information age, where broadband, internet and data center saturates the world of information. Information is available through all possible mediums, wired as well as wireless. Data transmission and data storing capacities of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) infrastructures are growing very fast and continu-ously, which are helpful in developing effectual Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and will reduce various social and environmental problems caused by modern transportation. This thesis is based on evaluating the share of energy consumed by ICT in a smart city for the transportation domain. The use of ICT in the transport sector has been increased for the last few decades where ICT is helping on developing more energy efficient sys-tems. Due to extensive ICT equipment used, it is necessary to calculate the energy con-sumption of the ICT equipment itself to identify, how much energy has been reduced in the consumption. Consecutively, calculating the energy consumption and estimating how much energy efficiency is achieved with ICT equipment in the infrastructure. However, there is not a single widely approved methodology that can be implemented for appropriately estimating the energy consumption of the ICT infrastructure, which can yield correct and fruitful results. Apart from the methodologies followed for the work conducted, this thesis will also look into a number of other energy measurement methodologies. All the entities involved in power consumption for ICT solutions in transportation are calculated and justified with visualizing the data collected. These results will help in evaluating the energy expenditure of the implemented systems and it will be possible to compare these values with the energy savings that are obtained. Finally, a JAVA based energy calculator is developed to accompany the test results collected

An electronically beam-steerable antenna (BSA) is envisioned. The presented BSA is a possible solution to overthrow the limitations inherent to phased antenna arrays. The design consists of a gap coupling inset feed rectangular patch (driven element) and 3 x 1 passive parasitic patches deployed on both sides of the driven patch. Prototype having 20 x 20 mm dimensions is printed on Rogers(R) RT/duroid(R)5870. Four switches are used to load the reactive impedance on parasitic patches, which in turn, change the phases of surface current on parasitic elements and the driven element. Based on the different ON and OFF configuration of switches in parasitic array elements, the main beam is steered along with different directions. The simulated results show that the design can operate between 26.8 and 30.3 GHz a wide impedance bandwidth |S-11|< -10 dB (12.5%) with a peak gain of 8.9 dBi and wide 3-dB scanning angle that is, -37 degrees to 156 degrees in the azimuth plane. The exhibited performance of BSA with favourable characteristics, such as wideband, adequate gain, wide-angle beam switching, and low profile renders the BSA a good candidate for 5G millimetre wave handheld devices. Moreover, to corroborate the performance, the design is fabricated, and experimental measurements were performed. Congruence is observed between the experimentally measured and computationally simulated results. The simulated results of spherical coverage analysis of BSA with the integration of smartphone form factor are also presented

    Get PDF
Over the last decade, the emphasis on improving the education and training of family physicians has increased. World Health Organization has also emphasized the importance of a trained primary care workforce. In 2017, Khyber Medical University (KMU) Peshawar initiated a one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Family Medicine for doctors working in primary care, to upgrade their skills and knowledge as Family Physicians. To justify the allocation of resources, there is a need for research on the impact of such programs. This study explores the impact of Diploma in Family Medicine (DFM) on primary care doctors in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It also identifies the barriers associated with learning and its translation to practice. A mixed-method explanatory study was conducted from February 2019-2020. Forty-five graduates from the DFM program at KMU were invited to participate in this study. The quantitative data was collected through questionnaires (n=30) and the results were then explained further through qualitative focus group interviews (n=24). Descriptive statistics were calculated for the quantitative data and thematic analysis was performed for the qualitative data. The respondents (n=30/45) were satisfied from the course content and delivery. They agreed that the course is useful (93.3%), relevant to their learning needs (86.7%) and they were able apply it to their clinical practice (100%). The qualitative findings also corroborated that the course improved both the clinical and consultation skills of the participants. The learning environment encouraged them to identify their learning needs and attain new competencies. They reported being more patient-centered and evidence-based, which increased patients' satisfaction. The program also resulted in increased career opportunities and other monetary benefits. Despite the blended nature of the program, the participants found it challenging to balance training with the provision of services. One-year Postgraduate Diploma in Family Medicine is focused, practical and relevant to the learning needs of primary healthcare physicians. The policymakers should consider provision of such training opportunities in both public and private-sector. Future research should explore the long-term impact of such programs on healthcare outcomes
