The theory and method of comparative area studies
Though many now downplay the tension between area studies and disciplinary political science, there has been little substantive guidance on how to accomplish complementarity between their respective approaches. This article seeks to develop the idea of comparative area studies (CAS) as a rubric that maintains the importance of regional knowledge while contributing to general theory building using inductive intra-regional, cross-regional, inter-regional comparison. Treating regions as theoretically-grounded analytical categories, rather than inert or innate geographical entities, can help inform both quantitative and qualitative attempts to build general theory.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline
Concepts and description in Gerring's social science methodology, 2nd ed.
In the Jorge Luis Borges' short story "Funes, the Memorious," the eponymous Funes is blessed with astounding powers of recall and observation. So powerful is his memory he insists on creating a new language, with unique signifiers for every aspect of existence: "Not Only was it difficult for him to see [that] the generic symbol 'dog' took in all dissimilar individuals of all shapes and sizes, it irritated him that 'dog' of three-fourteen in the afternoon, seen in profile, should be indicated by the same noun as the dog of three-fifteen, seen frontally." Ultimately, Borges' narrator concludes, Funes was "not very capable of thought. To think is to forget a difference, to generalize, to abstract. In the overly replete world of Funes there was nothing but details, almost contiguous details" (Borges 2000)

Strategic Rhetorical Balancing and the Tactics of Justification in Afghanistan, Libya and Beyond
The Journal of Intervention and Statebuilding celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. This special volume opens up with a selection of nine of the most influential articles published in the journal. JISB's editorial team has asked the authors for their reflections on their original articles, telling us more about the writing process at that time, what they would do differently (with hindsight), or how they see their articles contributing to current debates on intervention and statebuilding. We have selected one article per volume, and we have ordered the contribution starting from volume 1 (2007) to volume 9 (2015). The articles will be made open access for the year, and we highly recommend (re-)reading the original articles along with the comments from the authors
