Diversity of selective and non-selective fishing gear and their impact on inland fisheries in Bangladesh
The paper describes the wide range of traditional fishing gear used by subsistence and professional fishers in the inland waters in Bangladesh as well as their impact on the fisheries and the environment. The negative impacts indicate the need for regulation of specific types of fishing gear at particular times of the year. An awareness/training program should be extended to the fishermen to create awareness of the long-term effects of their fishing practices and to impart knowledge of fishing laws
Culture feasibility of african catfish (Clarias gariepinus Lin.) fry in glass tank and synthetic hapa system using supplemental diets
An experiment was carried out with 1 0 days old Clarias gariepinus fry over a period of 42 days to determine the effects of different feeds on growth and survival of African catfish fry in glass tanks. The experiment was designed into four treatments each having three replications. Thus treatment 1 (T1) was named as Tank Tubifex (TT) and treatment 2 (T2) as Tank Sabinco (TS), treatment 3 as Pond Tubifex (PT), and treatment 4 (T4) as Pond Sabinco (PS). Live Tubifex (protein levels 64.48%) was supplied to treatments 1 and 3 and rest of the treatments were supplied Sabinco starter-1 (protein levels 40.13%). The highest and the lowest growth in total length and weight were 12.90cm, 18.77g and 6.17cm, 4.04g recorded from the treatments 3 and 2, respectively. Growth of catfish fry under treatment 3 in terms of both length and weight were significantly higher (P<0.01) than those of the other treatments. However treatment 2 showed the significantly lowest (P<0.01) growth performance among the various treatments. The highest survival rate (92%) was also obtained with treatment 3. Tubifex proved to be the best larval feed in respect of growth and survival rate
Estimating the Population Standard Deviation with Confidence Interval: A Simulation Study under Skewed and Symmetric Conditions
This paper investigates the performance of ten methods for constructing a confidence interval estimator for the population standard deviation by a simulation study. Since a theoretical comparison among the interval estimators is not possible, a simulation study has been conducted to compare the performance of the selected interval estimators. Data were randomly generated from several distributions with a range of sample sizes. Various evaluation criterions are considered for performance comparison. Two health related data have been analyzed to illustrate the application of the proposed confidence intervals. Based on simulation results, some intervals with the best performance have been recommended for practitioners
A Comparison of Some Robust Bicariate Control Charts for Individual Observations
This paper proposed and considered some bivariate control charts to monitor individual observations from a statistical process control. Usual control charts which use mean and variance-covariance estimators are sensitive to outliers. We consider the following robust alternatives to the classical Hoteling’s T2: T2MedMAD, T2MCD, T2MVE A simulation study has been conducted to compare the performance of these control charts. Two real life data are analyzed to illustrate the application of these robust alternatives
Energy management and sizing of a stand-alone hybrid renewable energy system for community electricity, fresh water, and cooking gas demands of a remote island
Research into the off-grid hybrid energy system to provide reliable electricity to a remote community has extensively been done. However, simultaneous meeting electric, freshwater, and gas demands from the off-grid hybrid energy sources are very scarce in literature. Power- to-X (PtX) is gaining attention in recent days in the energy transition scenarios to generate green hydrogen, the primary product of the process as an energy carrier, which is deemed to replace conventional fuels to reach absolute carbon neutrality. In this study, renewable–based hybrid energy is developed to simultaneously meet the electricity, freshwater, and gas (cooking gas via methanation process) demands for a remote Island in Bangladesh. In this process, an energy management strategy has been developed to use the excess energy to generate both freshwater and the hydrogen, where hydrogen is then converted to natural gas via methanation process. The PV, wind turbine, diesel generator, battery, and fuel cell have been optimized using non-dominating sorting algorithm-II (NSGA-II) to offer reliable, cost-effective solutions of electricity, freshwater, and cooking gas for the end users. Results reported that the PV/WT/DG/Batt configuration has been found the most economic configuration with the lowest COE (0.1724 /m3 and 3.978 $/m3, respectively
Reliability analysis of the new exponential inverted topp–leone distribution with applications
The inverted Topp–Leone distribution is a new, appealing model for reliability analysis. In this paper, a new distribution, named new exponential inverted Topp–Leone (NEITL) is presented, which adds an extra shape parameter to the inverted Topp–Leone distribution. The graphical representations of its density, survival, and hazard rate functions are provided. The following properties are explored: quantile function, mixture representation, entropies, moments, and stress– strength reliability. We plotted the skewness and kurtosis measures of the proposed model based on the quantiles. Three different estimation procedures are suggested to estimate the distribution parameters, reliability, and hazard rate functions, along with their confidence intervals. Additionally, stress–strength reliability estimators for the NEITL model were obtained. To illustrate the findings of the paper, two real datasets on engineering and medical fields have been analyzed
A comparison of some confidence intervals for estimating the population coefficient of variation: a simulation study
This paper considers several confidence intervals for estimating the population coefficient of variation based on parametric, nonparametric and modified methods. A simulation study has been conducted to compare the performance of the existing and newly proposed interval estimators. Many intervals were modified in our study by estimating the variance with the median instead of the mean and these modifications were also successful. Data were generated from normal, chi-square, and gamma distributions for CV = 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5. We reported coverage probability and interval length for each estimator. The results were applied to two public health data: child birth weight and cigarette smoking prevalence. Overall, good intervals included an interval for chi-square distributions by McKay (1932), an interval estimator for normal distributions by Miller (1991), and our proposed interval
Translation and Validation of Enhanced Asian Rome III Questionnaires in Bengali Language for Diagnosis of Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders
Background/AimsFunctional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), diagnosed by symptom-based criteria due to lack of biomarkers, need translated-validated questionnaires in different languages. As Bengali, the mother tongue of Bangladesh and eastern India, is the seventh most spoken language in the world, we translated and validated the Enhanced Asian Rome III questionnaire (EAR3Q) in this language.MethodsThe EAR3Q was translated in Bengali as per guideline from the Rome Foundation. The translated questionnaire was validated prospectively on Bengali-speaking healthy subjects (HS, n = 30), and patients with functional dyspepsia (FD, n = 35), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS, n = 40) and functional constipation (FC, n = 12) diagnosed by clinicians using the Rome III criteria. The subjects were asked to fill-in the questionnaire again after 2 weeks, to check for its reproducibility.ResultsDuring translation, the original and the backward translated English versions of the questionnaire demonstrated high concordance. Sensitivity of the Bengali questionnaire to diagnose patients with FD, IBS, FC, and HS was 100%, 100%, 75%, and 100%, respectively, considering diagnosis by the clinicians as the gold standard. On test-retest reliability analysis, Kappa values for FD, IBS, FC, and HS were 1.0, 1.0, 0.83, and 1.0, respectively. The Bengali questionnaire detected considerable overlap of FD symptoms among patients with IBS, IBS among patients with FD, and FD among patients with FC, which were not detected by the clinicians.ConclusionsWe successfully translated and validated the EAR3Q in Bengali. We believe that this translated questionnaire will be useful for clinical evaluation and research on FGIDs in the Bengali-speaking population
A simulation study on some confidence intervals for the population standard deviation
In this paper a robust estimator against outliers along with some other existing interval estimators are considered for estimating the population standard deviation. An extensive simulation study has been conducted to compare and evaluate the performance of the interval estimators. The exact and the proposed robust method are easy to calculate and are not overly computer-intensive. It appears that the proposed robust method is performing better than other confidence intervals for estimating the population standard deviation, specifically in the presence of outliers and/or data are from a skewed distribution. Some real-life examples are considered to illustrate the application of the proposed confidence intervals, which also supported the simulation study to some extent
Stigma and its associated factors among patients with COVID-19 in Dhaka City: evidence from a cross-sectional investigation
Background:
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a significant disease pandemic. Dhaka City alone has contributed about one-third to the total COVID-19 cases in Bangladesh. Globally, patients with infectious diseases, including COVID-19, experience stigma. There was no quantitative estimate of stigma experienced by patients with COVID-19 in the country. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of stigma and its associated factors among patients with COVID-19 in Dhaka.
Methods:
A cross-sectional study was conducted among 384 respondents aged 18 years or older who had been hospitalized or had stayed at home and were tested negative 15 days to 6 months before the day of data collection. Data collection was done through in-person and telephone interviews using a semi-structured survey questionnaire. A 15-item COVID-19-related stigma scale questionnaire was used to assess stigma. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the predictors of stigma.
Results:
More than half (53.1%) of the respondents experienced stigma when they were COVID-19 positive. Females were at a 3.24 times higher risk of experiencing stigma than their male counterparts. Respondents from the 60+ age group and 40–59 age group were 63.0% and 48.0% less likely to experience stigma than those from the 18–39 age group. Non-hospitalised patients had 1.67 times higher odds of facing stigma than those hospitalised.
Conclusions:
This study reported a high prevalence of stigma among the patients with COVID-19 in Dhaka City. The current evidence base of stigma experience among patients with COVID-19 offers a solid foundation for creating effective strategies and policies and designing appropriate interventions to counter stigma, which will improve the psychological well-being of patients with COVID-19 in Bangladesh
