This thesis aims to bring a new understanding of anticonsumption activism. Theliterature on social movements conceptualizes activism as political or cultural actions. In this study, we rely on the convention theory to highlight the underlying rules of anticonsumption activism. Based on ethnographical data and phenomenological interviews, we explain, first, anticonsumption activism through the orders model. Then, we question the competence of activists to criticize the conventions of the orders model. Finally, this critical competence allows us to analyze the rules of a new convention coordinating anticonsumption activism. This activist convention has implication for managers, by giving them knowledge on anticonsumption activism.

Assessing the Societal Impact of Research: The Relational Engagement Approach

    Get PDF
Marketing and policy researchers aiming to increase the societal impact of their scholarship should engage directly with relevant stakeholders. For maximum societal effect, this engagement needs to occur both within the research process and throughout the complex process of knowledge transfer. The authors propose that a relational engagement approach to research impact complements and builds on traditional approaches. Traditional approaches to impact employ bibliometric measures and focus on the creation and use of journal articles by scholarly audiences, an important but incomplete part of the academic process. The authors recommend expanding the strategies and measures of impact to include process assessments for specific stakeholders across the entire course of impact, from the creation, awareness, and use of knowledge to societal impact. This relational engagement approach involves the cocreation of research with audiences beyond academia. The authors hope to begin a dialogue on the strategies researchers can use to increase the potential societal benefits of their research

The micro dynamics of participation in collective market work: The case of Community-Supported Agriculture in France

    No full text
International audienceConsumer and market researchers have studied market shaping as the outcomes of institutional struggles. By focusing on the macro dynamics, scholars have explained how markets change over time. However, they have paid less attention to understand the forces that animate people’s participation in a market and under what conditions this participation persists. To advance the literature, this paper focuses on the micro dynamics of markets. Developing insights from ethnographic research based on three years spent in a Community-Supported Agriculture, we show how personal and historical concerns shape actors’ commitments to and participation in a market. Plus, we explain how actors evaluate their participation in a market, leading to change the micro dynamics of the market. Our findings contribute to existing theorizations of market shaping and have managerial implications
