    A Long-Run Dynamic Analysis of FDI, Growth and Oil Export in GCC Countries: An Evidence from VECM Model

    This study investigates a long-run dynamic relationship of GDP, crude oil export and FDI inflows in GCC countries; The United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait. The methodology adopted is based on Error Correction Model (VECM) which involves 195 stationary balanced observations over the period 2000-2010. Two major objectives were tested, which are; Impulse response function and Variance Decomposition method. The empirical analysis shows that a shock of FDI inflows will cause a parallel negative influence on the oil export and GDP.  As well as FDI inflows are highly linked to GDP compared to oil export.

    A New Log Lindley Distribution with Applications

    This paper introduces a new generalization of the Lindley distribution introduced by [1], using the basic idea of [2] and along the lines of [3]. The new distribution is a compound of the Lindley and logarithmic distributions. We refer to the new model as the logarithmic-Lindley (Log-L) distribution. This model is capable of modeling various shapes of aging and failure criteria. The properties of the Log-L model are discussed, and the maximum likelihood estimation method is used to evaluate the parameters involved. Finally, the usefulness of the new model for modeling reliability data is illustrated using a two real data sets with simulation study

    Different inflammatory mechanisms in lungs of severe and mild asthma: crosstalk of NF-kappa-B, TGFâ1, Bax, Bcl-2, IL-4 and IgE

    Objective: To examine differences in the apoptotic, inflammatory, allergic and immunological features in the lungs of adults with asthma. Material and methods: Thirty‐six patients with mild asthma (MA), 16 with severe asthma (SA) and 20 healthy volunteers (HVs) were enrolled. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was processed into cell‐free fluid for enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay detecting soluble TGFβ1, IL‐4 and IgE and BALF lymphocytes for immunocytochemical staining of cellular Bax, Bcl‐2 and nuclear factor‐Kappa‐B (NFκB). Results: Cellular NFκB expression was higher in SA than in MA and HVs, while extracellular TGFβ1 was high in both the SA and MA groups but low in the HVs. Bcl‐2/Bax ratio was higher in SA than in MA and in MA than in HV groups and correlated significantly with NFκB level. Interestingly, the levels of IgE and, to a lesser extent, IL‐4 were higher in MA than in SA and both were much higher than in HVs, and were inversely correlated with NFκB level in the SA group and with TGFβ1 level in the MA group. Conclusions: NFκB has a central role in the perpetuation of persistent inflammation in SA and might induce apoptosis via Bcl‐2. The SA group appears not associated much with allergen‐based IgE and IL‐4 reactions as efficiently as in MA. This was supported by the lower levels of IgE and IL‐4 in SA compared to MA.     The association of Streptococcus bovis/gallolyticus with colorectal tumors: The nature and the underlying mechanisms of its etiological role

    Streptococcus bovis (S. bovis) bacteria are associated with colorectal cancer and adenoma. S. bovis is currently named S. gallolyticus. 25 to 80% of patients with S. bovis/gallolyticus bacteremia have concomitant colorectal tumors. Colonic neoplasia may arise years after the presentation of bacteremia or infectious endocarditis of S. bovis/gallolyticus. The presence of S. bovis/gallolyticus bacteremia and/or endocarditis is also related to the presence of villous or tubular-villous adenomas in the large intestine. In addition, serological relationship of S. gallolyticus with colorectal tumors and direct colonization of S. gallolyticus in tissues of colorectal tumors were found. However, this association is still under controversy and has long been underestimated. Moreover, the etiological versus non-etiological nature of this associationis not settled yet. Therefore, by covering the most of up to date studies, this review attempts to clarify the nature and the core of S. bovis/gallolyicus association with colorectal tumors and analyze the possible underlying mechanisms

    Novel approach of using a cocktail of designed bacteriophages against gut pathogenic E. colifor bacterial load biocontrol

    BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to explore new approaches of animal biocontrol via biological control feed. METHOD: White rats were subjected to 140 highly lytic designed phages specific against E. coli. Phages were fed via drinking water, oral injection, and vegetable capsules. Phage feeding was applied by 24 h feeding with 11d monitoring and 20d phage feeding and monitoring. Group of rats received external pathogenic E. coli and another group did not, namely groups A and B. RESULTS: Phage feeding for 20d via vegetable capsules yielded the highest reduction of fecal E. coli, 3.02 and 4.62 log, in rats group A and B respectively. Second best, feeding for 20d via drinking water with alkali yielded 2.78 and 4.08 log in rats groups A and B respectively. The peak reduction in E. coli output was 5–10 d after phage feeding. Phage control declined after 10(th) day of feeding. CONCLUSIONS: The use of cocktail of designed phages succeeded in suppressing flora or external E. coli. The phage feed biocontrol is efficient in controlling E. coli at the pre-harvest period, precisely at the 6(th)-8(th) day of phage feeding when the lowest E. coli output found

    Molecular detection, quantification, and isolation of Streptococcus gallolyticus bacteria colonizing colorectal tumors: inflammation-driven potential of carcinogenesis via IL-1, COX-2, and IL-8

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Colorectal cancer (CRC) has long been associated with bacteremia and/or endocarditis by <it>Streptococcus gallolyticus </it>member bacteria (SGMB) but the direct colonization of SGMB along with its molecular carcinogenic role, if any, has not been investigated. We assessed the colonization of SGMB in CRC patients with history of bacteremia (CRC-w/bac) and without history of bacteremia (CRC-wo/bac) by isolating SGMB from feces, mucosal surfaces of colorectum, and colorectal tissues and detecting SGMB DNA, via PCR and in situ hybridization (ISH) assays targeting <it>SodA </it>gene in colorectal tissues. Moreover, mRNA of IL1, IL-8, COX-2, IFN-γ, c-Myc, and Bcl-2 in colorectal tissues of studied groups was assessed via ISH and RT-PCR.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>SGMB were found to be remarkably isolated in tumorous (TU) and non-tumorous (NTU) tissues of CRC-w/bac, 20.5% and 17.3%, and CRC-wo/bac, 12.8% and 11.5%, respectively while only 2% of control tissues revealed SGMB (P < 0.05); such contrast was not found in mucosal and fecal isolation of SGMB. The positive detection of SGMB DNA in TU and NTU of CRC-w/bac and CRC-wo/bac via PCR, 48.7%, 35.9%, 32.7%, and 23%, respectively, and ISH, 46.1%, 30.7%, 28.8%, and 17.3%, respectively, was higher than in control tissues, 4 and 2%, respectively (P < 0.05). SGMB count measured via quantitative PCR of SGMB DNA in terms of copy number (CN), in TU and NTU of CRC-w/bac and CRC-wo/bac, 2.96-4.72, 1.29-2.81, 2.16-2.92, and 0.67-2.07 log<sub>10 </sub>CN/g respectively, showed higher colonization in TU than in NTU and in CRC-w/bac than in CRC-wo/bac (P < 0.05). The PCR-based mRNA ratio and ISH-based percentage of positively stained cells of IL-1, 1.77 and 70.3%, COX-2, 1.63 and 44.8%, and IL-8, 1.73 and 70.3%, respectively, rather than IFN-γ, c-Myc, and Bcl-2, were higher in SGMB positive patients than in control or SGMB negative patients (P < 0.05).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The current study indicated that colorectal cancer is remarkably associated with SGMB; moreover, molecular detection of SGMB in CRC was superior to link SGMB with CRC tumors highlighting a possible direct and active role of SGMB in CRC development through most probably inflammation-based sequel of tumor development or propagation via, but not limited to, IL-1, COX-2, and IL-8.</p

    Comprehensive pineapple segmentation techniques with intelligent convolutional neural network

    This paper proposes an intelligent segmentation technique for pineapple fruit using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Cascade Object Detector (COD) method is used to detect the position of the pineapple from the captured image by returning the bounding box around the detecting pineapple. Image background such as ground, sky and other unwanted objects have been removed using Hue value, Adaptive Red and Blue Chromatic Map (ARB) and Normalized Difference Index (NDI) methods. However, the ARB and NDI methods are still producing misclassified error and the edge is not really smooth. In this case Template Matching Method (TMM) has been implemented for image enhancement process. Finally, an intelligent CNN is developed as a decision maker to select the best segmentation image ouput from ARB and NDI. The results obtained show that the proposed intelligent method has successfully verified the fruit from the background with high accuracy as compared to the conventional method

    Assessing the competitiveness and comparative advantage of broiler production in Johor using policy analysis matrix

    Malaysian poultry policy aims to provide remunerative prices for producers and to guarantee a steady supply of poultry products at stable and affordable prices to consumers. Broiler meat is the most important and the cheapest protein source in Malaysia and trade protection could stimulate the local industry and enhance food security. The study attempts to evaluate the competitiveness and comparative advantage of three different scales of broiler production in Johor using policy analysis matrix (PAM). The existing protection and the level of comparative advantage are ascertained through PAM indicators. The results show that Malaysia has strong competitiveness position in every scale of broiler production especially the largest scale. But, the protection through import curtailment resulted in higher domestic prices than the world price. To increase competitiveness, the broiler industry should reduce the dependence on expensive and unstable cost of corn based feed

    Detection of Vibrio cholerae in raw cockles (Anadara granosa) by polymerase chain reaction

    Aimed of this study was to determine the presence of Vibrio cholerae in cockles (Anadara granosa) from different coasts in Malaysia and to measure the biosafety of V. cholerae in raw cockles at wet market in Malaysia using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in combination with the most probable number (MPN) method. A total of 100 samples from 4 different wet markets in the West and East were examined for the presence of V. cholerae. The prevalence of V. cholerae between the two coasts was not significant different. In fact, the 74% of samples from West coast area was found positive while the 69% for samples collected in the East coast. West coast samples showed a prevalence of 60% for the wet market A=, 64% for B=, 88% for C= and 84% for the market D); East coast samples showed the same percentage with 72% for the wet markets E, F and H, followed by wet market G with 60%.With the MPN-PCR method, using 80 samples of raw cockles obtained from 4 wet markets, the occurrence of V. cholerae detected was of 95%. The frequency of V. cholerae in raw cockles obtained from wet market I and L was higher (100%) compared to other wet market (Wet market B=, 90%; Wet market C=, 95%).The density of V. cholerae detected in all samples ranged from 24000 MPN/g, but most of the samples (24 samples) were in category >24000 MPN/g concentration. V. cholerae was present in raw cockles in higher number. Hence, these results demonstrate the presence of pathogenic V.cholerae in cockles harvested and reveal the potential risk of illness associated with their consumption. This study will be the first biosafety assessment of V. choleare in raw cockles in Malaysia and it will provide significant insights about Malaysian scenario
