Since independence of the Republic of Indonesia, Muslims, as the majority population, have established diverse Islamic political parties. The nature of such parties has changed from the days of the Old Order to the New Order and Reformasi eras. Despite similar anatomies between Islamic parties of the Old Order and those of Reformasi, Islamic political parties profess different ideological missions. While the beginning of Old Order saw the confederation of Islamic political parties, Masyumi, seeking to promote the establishment of an Islamic State, none of the Islamic political parties which mushroomed during Reformasi era expressly struggled for the establishment of an Islamic state. However, the Islamic political parties had to weather similar problems of internal conflict and fragmentation. Different ideological strands, policy stances and leadership styles are believed to be amongst the pivotal root causes of their domestic troubles. With their popular votes and parliamentary seats significantly reduced, they prove to be no competition to the nationalist political parties

A CRITICAL APPRAISAL OF PARTI ISLAM SEMALAYSIA (PAS) OPPOSITION-BASED STRUGGLE FOR AN ISLAMIC STATE (UNTIL 2008)

The shattering defeat of PAS in the 2004 general elections, while holding on to the reins of government in the state of Kelantan by a tiny majority, heralded an era of introspection for party leaders and strategists. PAS had misread popular sentiment for justice and good governance, which had propelled it into recording massive gains at the expense of its arch-rival UMNO in 1999, as an endorsement of its Islamic state agenda. Its adamant retention of this agenda, costing it an alliance with the Democratic Action Party (DAP) in the Barisan Alternatif (BA) coalition, was most vividly displayed by its revelation of the Islamic State Document (ISD) in late 2003. While PAS does not claim to have disavowed the ISD, deliberations on the ISD seem to have stalled in preference for internal party reforms. Prodding for the reforms are the young professionals whose influx into the party in the mid-1990s transformed the landscape of PAS which in the 1960s was closely identified with the Malay peasantry class. Clearly, the impact of globalization and the rise of the middle class during the era of Dr. Mahathir Mohamad’s Premiership have not eluded PAS. This paper traces such changes, focusing on the realms of political economy and ideological modernization. Internal pressures for changes have accelerated since the electoral setback of 2004 and a string of by-election defeats, at the risk of alienating grassroots party activists who hold the conservative ulama leadership in high esteem. This paper contends that any structural transformation in PAS will necessarily take a long time. Internal fissures are not automatically solved by electoral success, as experienced by PAS in the March 2008 elections, when PAS not only retained the state of Kelantan, but also shared the spoils of power in Kedah, Perak, Selangor and Penang as a component party of the newly assembled People’s Pact (PR: Pakatan Rakyat) coalition

The millennial advent of a Global War on Terrorism (GWOT), pursued by the United States of America (USA) in the wake of devastating terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon on 11 September 2001 (hereafter 9111), cast gloom on the prospects of inter-cultural and inter-religious dialogue in an increasingly interdependent world. The USA's conduct of GWOT has been subjected to various censures by analysts for being over-militaristic, neglecting ideological warfare and uncritically aggregating disparate trends of terrorism

The misconception of political lessons : how UMNO perceives the fall of LDP in Japan

2012 marks the thirtieth anniversary of Malaysia’s Look East Policy (LEP). This article argues that the strong relationship between Malaysia and Japan is stimulated by symbiotic ties binding together both countries’ respective major political parties, viz. the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) and the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). UMNO, especially under the leadership of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad (1981-2003), derived political lessons from developments affecting LDP in Japan. Two forms of lessons may be discerned. First, emulation of Japan’s success in economic development, which become the basis of LEP launched in 1981. Second, on which our article focuses, lessons from the failure of LDP to retain power twice in 1993 and 2009. Since 1993, DP’s defeat has been a poignant reminder for UMNO to be in alert mode in facing any electoral possibility. When LDP was again ousted from power in 2009, UMNO was a most psychologically affected party owing to the unprecedented setback it suffered at Malaysia’s Twelfth General Elections (GE) of 2008. Yet, although LDP’s reversal of fortunes served as a landmark for UMNO in situating changes to its trajectory since 1999, the analogical reasoning and political lessons applied by UMNO leaders were, to a large extent, flawed. Arguably, politicians frequently do misjudge in analogising between different situations which at a glance seem to be comparable

Lean is a set of operating philosophies and methods that can help patients create maximum value by reducing waste and waiting time. Longer waiting times are associated with increased levels of discomfort experienced by patients that may affect the patient’s mental health, leads to depression, anxiety disorder and psychological distress. The waiting time of clinic is considered one of the crucial aspects of patient satisfaction which is a key indicator of service delivery. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to implement lean techniques towards reducing waiting time at outpatient department in one of the public healthcare centres in Kedah. This study had collected the data for three days at the outpatient department by using qualitative method through interview and observation. Data was collected through a record phenomenon with instrument and observing the service time of patients in the process flow throughout the treatment period from the moment they arrived at the healthcare until treatment is provided and the patient leaves the outpatient department. Arena simulation software designed for data analysis was used to simulate the modeled process in the simulation software. The simulation system can help to produce more accurate decision for an efficient flow of the patient’s in and out of the treatment process and reduce the waiting time. The results showed the total average processing time for each patient through all the process had reduced by 7.21 minutes (15.20%) after the waste was eliminated and improvement process had been made. This can lead to an increase in the number of patients in and out in daily operation at the outpatient department

Previous studies indicated that the autonomous maintenance barrier factors are affected the maintenance efficiency. However, most of these studies were conducted in the service industry but not in the manufacturing industry. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to identify the most critical barrier factors towards maintenance efficiency and also to identify the relationship between autonomous maintenance barrier factors and maintenance efficiency in manufacturing industries. Five research hypotheses were examined while considering the autonomous maintenance barrier factors which including lack of top management commitment, lack of training, lack of maintenance knowledge, resistance by employees, and lack of tools and instrument. The findings of this study revealed that lack of tools and instrument is the most critical barrier factor. This quantitative case study is crucial to the manufacturing industry in Malaysia because it provides a broad insight into the correlation between the autonomous maintenance barrier factor and maintenance efficiency

Innovator-Firm Collaboration: The Moderating Role of Transactional Capacity (TC)

Product innovations success at research and development level, does not guarantee that it will lead to the success in commercialization stage. Despite the enormous research efforts, the commercialization rates of product innovation are still at an alarming level in many countries including Malaysia. While collaboration has been acknowledged as pertinent to the success of innovation product commercialization, the collaborative effort between innovation recipient firm and the innovators remains limited. Besides, one of the central questions is how and under what condition the two parties are more likely to engage in a resilient collaborative effort, from the perspective of innovation recipient firms remain unclear. This new perspective requires an understanding of the relationship between collaboration and commercialization performance and the moderating effect of TC from firms perspective. Based on the response of 104 product innovation recipient firms, the findings show that collaboration positively affects firms market performance and innovation survival. In addition, transactional capacity gives medium effect to collaboration, leading to better firms innovation survival. This study contributes to the literature by exploring how close collaboration between firm and innovator initiates to enhance the firms market performance and innovation survival. It also increases our understanding of how TC relate to collaboration and market performance and innovation survival
