Towards a Graphene-Based Quantum Impedance Standard
Precision measurements of the quantum Hall resistance with alternating
current (ac) in the kHz range were performed on epitaxial graphene in order to
assess its suitability as a quantum standard of impedance. The quantum Hall
plateaus measured with alternating current were found to be flat within one
part in 10^7. This is much better than for plain GaAs quantum Hall devices and
shows that the magnetic-flux-dependent capacitive ac losses of the graphene
device are less critical. The observed frequency dependence of about
-8x10^-8/kHz is comparable in absolute value to the positive frequency
dependence of plain GaAs devices, but the negative sign is attributed to stray
capacitances which we believe can be minimized by a careful design of the
graphene device. Further improvements thus may lead to a simpler and more
user-friendly quantum standard for both resistance and impedance
Rayleigh-B\'{e}nard convection in a homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystal
We report experimental results for convection near onset in a thin layer of a
homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystal heated from below as a function
of the temperature difference and the applied vertical magnetic
field and compare them with theoretical calculations. The experiments cover
the field range 8 \alt h \equiv H/ H_{F} \alt 80 ( is the
Fr\'eedericksz field). For less than a codimension-two field the bifurcation is subcritical and oscillatory, with travelling- and
standing-wave transients. Beyond the bifurcation is stationary and
subcritical until a tricritical field is reached, beyond which it
is supercritical. The bifurcation sequence as a function of found in the
experiment confirms the qualitative aspects of the theoretical predictions.
However, the value of is about 10% higher than the predicted value and
the results for are systematically below the theory by about 2% at small
and by as much as 7% near . At , is continuous within
the experimental resolution whereas the theory indicates a 7% discontinuity.
The theoretical tricritical field is somewhat below the
experimental one. The fully developed flow above for is
chaotic. For the subcritical stationary bifurcation also
leads to a chaotic state. The chaotic states persist upon reducing the Rayleigh
number below , i.e. the bifurcation is hysteretic. Above the tricritical
field , we find a bifurcation to a time independent pattern which within
our resolution is non-hysteretic.Comment: 15 pages incl. 23 eps figure
Effect of the Centrifugal Force on Domain Chaos in Rayleigh-B\'enard convection
Experiments and simulations from a variety of sample sizes indicated that the
centrifugal force significantly affects rotating Rayleigh-B\'enard
convection-patterns. In a large-aspect-ratio sample, we observed a hybrid state
consisting of domain chaos close to the sample center, surrounded by an annulus
of nearly-stationary nearly-radial rolls populated by occasional defects
reminiscent of undulation chaos. Although the Coriolis force is responsible for
domain chaos, by comparing experiment and simulation we show that the
centrifugal force is responsible for the radial rolls. Furthermore, simulations
of the Boussinesq equations for smaller aspect ratios neglecting the
centrifugal force yielded a domain precession-frequency
with as predicted by the amplitude-equation model for domain
chaos, but contradicted by previous experiment. Additionally the simulations
gave a domain size that was larger than in the experiment. When the centrifugal
force was included in the simulation, and the domain size closely agreed
with experiment.Comment: 8 pages, 11 figure

Scaling of thermal conductivity of helium confined in pores
We have studied the thermal conductivity of confined superfluids on a
bar-like geometry. We use the planar magnet lattice model on a lattice with . We have applied open boundary conditions on the bar
sides (the confined directions of length ) and periodic along the long
direction. We have adopted a hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm to efficiently deal
with the critical slowing down and in order to solve the dynamical equations of
motion we use a discretization technique which introduces errors only
in the time step . Our results demonstrate the
validity of scaling using known values of the critical exponents and we
obtained the scaling function of the thermal resistivity. We find that our
results for the thermal resistivity scaling function are in very good agreement
with the available experimental results for pores using the tempComment: 5 two-column pages, 3 figures, Revtex
Boundary Limitation of Wavenumbers in Taylor-Vortex Flow
We report experimental results for a boundary-mediated wavenumber-adjustment
mechanism and for a boundary-limited wavenumber-band of Taylor-vortex flow
(TVF). The system consists of fluid contained between two concentric cylinders
with the inner one rotating at an angular frequency . As observed
previously, the Eckhaus instability (a bulk instability) is observed and limits
the stable wavenumber band when the system is terminated axially by two rigid,
non-rotating plates. The band width is then of order at small
() and agrees well with
calculations based on the equations of motion over a wide -range.
When the cylinder axis is vertical and the upper liquid surface is free (i.e.
an air-liquid interface), vortices can be generated or expelled at the free
surface because there the phase of the structure is only weakly pinned. The
band of wavenumbers over which Taylor-vortex flow exists is then more narrow
than the stable band limited by the Eckhaus instability. At small
the boundary-mediated band-width is linear in . These results are
qualitatively consistent with theoretical predictions, but to our knowledge a
quantitative calculation for TVF with a free surface does not exist.Comment: 8 pages incl. 9 eps figures bitmap version of Fig
Square patterns in Rayleigh-Benard convection with rotation about a vertical axis
We present experimental results for Rayleigh-Benard convection with rotation
about a vertical axis at dimensionless rotation rates in the range 0 to 250 and
upto 20% above the onset. Critical Rayleigh numbers and wavenumbers agree with
predictions of linear stability analysis. For rotation rates greater than 70
and close to onset, the patterns are cellular with local four-fold coordination
and differ from the theoretically expected Kuppers-Lortz unstable state. Stable
as well as intermittent defect-free square lattices exist over certain
parameter ranges. Over other ranges defects dynamically disrupt the lattice but
cellular flow and local four-fold coordination is maintained.Comment: ReVTeX, 4 pages, 7 eps figures include
Influence of the Dufour effect on convection in binary gas mixtures
Linear and nonlinear properties of convection in binary fluid layers heated
from below are investigated, in particular for gas parameters. A Galerkin
approximation for realistic boundary conditions that describes stationary and
oscillatory convection in the form of straight parallel rolls is used to
determine the influence of the Dufour effect on the bifurcation behaviour of
convective flow intensity, vertical heat current, and concentration mixing. The
Dufour--induced changes in the bifurcation topology and the existence regimes
of stationary and traveling wave convection are elucidated. To check the
validity of the Galerkin results we compare with finite--difference numerical
simulations of the full hydrodynamical field equations. Furthermore, we report
on the scaling behaviour of linear properties of the stationary instability.Comment: 14 pages and 10 figures as uuencoded Postscript file (using uufiles
Karhunen-Lo`eve Decomposition of Extensive Chaos
We show that the number of KLD (Karhunen-Lo`eve decomposition) modes D_KLD(f)
needed to capture a fraction f of the total variance of an extensively chaotic
state scales extensively with subsystem volume V. This allows a correlation
length xi_KLD(f) to be defined that is easily calculated from spatially
localized data. We show that xi_KLD(f) has a parametric dependence similar to
that of the dimension correlation length and demonstrate that this length can
be used to characterize high-dimensional inhomogeneous spatiotemporal chaos.Comment: 12 pages including 4 figures, uses REVTeX macros. To appear in Phys.

Compassion, Dominance/Submission, and Curled Lips: A Thematic Analysis of Dacryphilic Experience
Paraphilias are often discussed in the psychological literature as pathological problems, yet relatively little research exists that looks into non-pathological paraphilias (i.e., non-normative sexual interests). Empirical evidence suggests that many individuals incorporate a range of non-normative sexual interests into their sexual lifestyles. Dacryphilia is a non-normative sexual interest that involves enjoyment or arousal from tears and crying, and to date has never been researched empirically. The present study set out to discover the different interests within dacryphilia and explore the range of dacryphilic experience. A set of online interviews was carried out with individuals with dacryphilic preferences and interests (six females and two males) from four countries. The data were analysed for semantic and latent themes using thematic analysis. The respondents' statements focused attention on three distinct areas that may be relevant to the experience of dacryphilia: (i) compassion; (ii) dominance/submission; and (iii) curled-lips. The data provided detailed descriptions of features within all three interests, which are discussed in relation to previous quantitative and qualitative research within emotional crying and tears, and the general area of non-normative sexual interests. The study suggests new directions for potential research both within dacryphilia and with regard to other non-normative sexual interests
