    Measurement of the electron energy spectrum and its moments in inclusive B -> Xe nu decays

    We report a measurement of the inclusive electron energy spectrum for semileptonic decays of B mesons in a data sample of 52 million Y(4S)-->B(B) over bar decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B-meson factory at SLAC. We determine the branching fraction, first, second, and third moments of the spectrum for lower cutoffs on the electron energy between 0.6 and 1.5 GeV. We measure the partial branching fraction to be B(B-->Xenu,E-e>0.6 GeV)=[10.36+/-0.06(stat.)+/-0.23(sys.)]%

    OBJECTIVE: To characterize the effects of cerebrovascular (CV) risk factors on preclinical memory decline in cognitively normal individuals at 3 levels of genetic risk for Alzheimer disease (AD) based on APOE genotype. METHODS: We performed longitudinal neuropsychological testing on an APOE ε4 enriched cohort, ages 21-97. The long-term memory (LTM) score of the Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) was the primary outcome measure. Any of 4 CV risk factors (CVany), including hypercholesterolemia (CHOL), prior cigarette use (CIG), diabetes mellitus (DM), and hypertension (HTN), was treated as a dichotomized variable. We estimated the longitudinal effect of age using statistical models that simultaneously modeled the cross-sectional and longitudinal effects of age on AVLT LTM by APOE genotype, CVany, and the interaction between the two. RESULTS: A total of 74 APOE ε4 homozygotes (HMZ), 239 ε4 heterozygotes (HTZ), and 494 ε4 noncarriers were included. APOE ε4 carrier status showed a significant quadratic effect with age-related LTM decline in all models as previously reported. CVany was associated with further longitudinal AVLT LTM decline in APOE ε4 carriers (p=0.02), but had no effect in noncarriers. When ε4 HTZ and HMZ were considered separately, there was a striking effect in HMZ (p\u3c0.001) but not in HTZ. In exploratory analyses, significant deleterious effects were found for CIG (p=0.001), DM (p=0.03), and HTN (p=0.05) in APOE ε4 carriers only that remained significant only for CIG after correction for multiple comparisons.     Anti-granulocyte opsonic activity and autoimmune neutropenia.

    Sera from patients with unexplained neutropenia have been assayed for anti-granulocyte opsonic activity using a chemiluminescence technique which measures the metabolic response of human monocytes to antibody-coated granulocytes. This rapid and simple technique was more sensitive than indirect immunofluorescence in the detection of anti-granulocyte antibodies. Anti-granulocyte opsonic activity was detected in sera from 17 of 31 patients, suggesting that their neutropenia may have had an autoimmune basis. The opsonic activity of five of the 17 sera was increased when granulocytes were sensitized in the presence of fresh serum. Four of these sera bound IgM and C3b to granulocytes in the immunofluorescence test. Human IgG when added to the monocyte suspension medium inhibited monocyte response to IgG antibody-opsonized granulocytes. This inhibition was less when granulocytes were opsonized with sera containing IgM and complement granulocyte-binding activity. This observation may be relevant to the selection of neutropenic patients for therapeutic use of intravenous immunoglobulin
