Best Practices in Knowledge Transfer: Insights from Top Universities
The impact of knowledge transfer induced by universities on economy, society, and culture is widely acknowledged; nevertheless, this aspect is often neglected by university rankings. Here, we considered three of the most popular global university rankings and specific knowledge transfer indicators by U-multirank, a European ranking system launched by the European Commission, in order to answer to the following research question: how do the world top universities, evaluated according to global university rankings, perform from a knowledge transfer point of view? To this aim, the top universities have been compared with the others through the calculation of a Global Performance Indicator in Knowledge Transfer (GPI KT), a hierarchical clustering, and an outlier analysis. The results show that the universities best rated by global rankings do not always perform as well from knowledge transfer point of view. By combining the obtained results, it is possible to state that only 5 universities (Berkeley, Stanford, MIT, Harvard, CALTEC), among the top in the world, exhibit a high-level performance in knowledge transfer activities. For a better understanding of the success factors and best practices in knowledge transfer, a brief description of the 5 cited universities, in terms of organization of technology transfer service, relationship with business, entrepreneurship programs, and, more generally, third mission activities, is provided. A joint reading of the results suggests that the most popular global university rankings probably fail to effectively photograph third mission activities because they can manifest in a variety of forms, due to the intrinsic and intangible nature of third mission variables, which are difficult to quantify with simple and few indicators
Oxidized Alginate Dopamine Conjugate: In Vitro Characterization for Nose‐to‐Brain Delivery Application
Background: The blood–brain barrier (BBB) bypass of dopamine (DA) is still a challenge for supplying it to the neurons of Substantia Nigra mainly affected by Parkinson disease. DA prodrugs have been studied to cross the BBB, overcoming the limitations of DA hydrophilicity. Therefore, the aim of this work is the synthesis and preliminary characterization of an oxidized alginate-dopamine (AlgOX-DA) conjugate conceived for DA nose-to-brain delivery. Methods: A Schiff base was designed to connect oxidized polymeric backbone to DA and both AlgOX and AlgOX-DA were characterized in terms of Raman, XPS, FT-IR, and 1H- NMR spectroscopies, as well as in vitro mucoadhesive and release tests. Results: Data demonstrated that AlgOX-DA was the most mucoadhesive material among the tested ones and it released the neurotransmitter in simulated nasal fluid and in low amounts in phosphate buffer saline. Results also demonstrated the capability of scanning near-field optical microscopy to study the structural and fluorescence properties of AlgOX, fluorescently labeled with fluorescein isothiocyanate microstructures. Interestingly, in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cell line up to 100 μg/mL, no toxic effect was derived from AlgOX and AlgOX-DA in 24 h. Seventy four Reference Sites of the European Innovation
Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA)
have been recognised by the European Commission in
2016 for their commitment to excellence in investing and
scaling up innovative solutions for active and healthy
ageing. The Reference Site Collaborative Network
(RSCN) brings together the EIP on AHA Reference Sites
awarded by the European Commission, and Candidate
Reference Sites into a single forum. The overarching goals
are to promote cooperation, share and transfer good
practice and solutions in the development and scaling up
of health and care strategies, policies and service delivery
models, while at the same time supporting the action
groups in their work. The RSCN aspires to be recognized
by the EU Commission as the principal forum and
authority representing all EIP on AHA Reference Sites.
The RSCN will contribute to achieve the goals of the EIP
on AHA by improving health and care outcomes for
citizens across Europe, and the development of sustainable
economic growth and the creation of jobs
Characterization and evaluation of chitosan nanoparticles for dopamine brain delivery
The aim of this study was to characterize nanoparticles (NPs) composed of chitosan (CS) and evaluate their potential for brain delivery of the neurotransmitter Dopamine (DA). For this purpose, CS based NPs were incubated with DA at two different concentrations giving rise to nanocarriers denoted as DA/CSNPs (1) and DA/CSNPs (5), respectively. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirmed that DA was adsorbed onto the external surface of such NPs. The cytotoxic effect of the CSNPs and DA/CSNPs was assessed using the MTT test and it was found that the nanovectors are less cytotoxic than the neurotransmitter DA after 3 h of incubation time. Transport studies across MDCKII-MDR1 cell line showed that DA/CSNPs (5) give rise to a significant transport enhancing effect compared with the control and greater than the corresponding DA/CSNPs (1). Measurement of reactive oxygen species (ROS) suggested a low DA/CSNPs neurotoxicity after 3 h. In vivo brain microdialysis experiments in rat showed that intraperitoneal acute administration of DA/CSNPs (5) (6-12 mg/kg) induced a dose-dependent increase in striatal DA output. Thus, these CS nanoparticles represent an interesting technological platform for DA brain delivery and, hence, may be useful for Parkinson's disease treatment. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V.
