In the cooler regions of Europe, the success of winter pea cultivation depends strongly on proper plant development before winter. Previous research has suggested that plants need to develop short internodes and at least their first two leaves before the arrival of frost. However, this stage of growth is sometimes not reached in the event of late sowing, due to factors such as unpredictable weather conditions or the delayed harvest of a previous crop. An effective solution may be the application of plant growth regulators before the sowing of seeds. The aim of this study was to assess the seedling developmental characteristics of winter pea dependent on biostimulator applications in low temperature conditions (4°C). Seven different winter pea cultivars were treated with three biostimulants: Asahi SL, Kelpak SL, and Primus B. After 21 days of seedling development, basic biometrical characteristics were measured (length and weight of shoots and roots). It was found that ‘Enduro’ and ‘Aviron’ showed greatest root development, regardless of the applied biostimulants. The highest germination was achieved by ‘Aviron’. The efficiency of biostimulators on the cultivars tested was low, although slightly better results were found for Asahi SL in combination with ‘Enduro’ and ‘Aviron’

ROHHAD syndrome (Rapid-onset Obesity with Hypothalamic Dysfunction, Hypoventilation, and Autonomic Dysregulation) is characterised by rapid-onset obesity in young children, hypoventilation, and hypothalamic and autonomic dysfunction. The exact aetiology of the disease remains unknown, and the number of reported cases seems to be underestimated. We present the case of a nine-year-old male patient suspected of ROHHAD due to weight gain since early childhood, decreased height velocity, hypoventilation, hypodipsia, excessive perspiration, and pyrexial episodes. The presented symptoms, and laboratory and imaging findings met the criteria of ROHHAD syndrome. ROHHAD should be considered in differential diagnosis for obesity in children. Early identification of the disease prevents potential complications specific for the syndrome, in particular a life-threatening cardio-pulmonary arrest. Patients with ROHHAD require regular follow-up by a multidisciplinary team. (Endokrynol Pol 2016; 67 (2): 226–231) ROHHAD (Rapid-onset Obesity with Hypothalamic Dysfunction, Hypoventilation and Autonomic Dysregulation) to rzadki zespół charakteryzujący się pojawiającą się we wczesnym dzieciństwie szybko narastającą otyłością, hipowentylacją oraz zaburzeniami funkcji podwzgórza i układu autonomicznego. Przyczyny zespołu pozostają nieznane, a diagnostyka i postawienie ostatecznego rozpoznania nastręcza wielu trudności. Przypuszcza się, że liczba przypadków zespołu jest znacznie niedoszacowana. W pracy zaprezentowano pierwszy w Polsce przypadek 9-letniego pacjenta z otyłością, zwolnieniem szybkości wzrastania, zaburzeniami oddychania, hipodypsją, nadmierną potliwością i epizodami gorączek. Całość obrazu klinicznego, wyniki badań laboratoryjnych i obrazowych spełniają kryteria rozpoznania zespołu ROHHAD u prezentowanego pacjenta. Zespół ROHHAD powinien być brany pod uwagę w diagnostyce różnicowej otyłości u dzieci. Wczesne postawienie rozpoznania może pomóc uniknąć powikłań wpisanych w obraz zespołu i zabezpieczyć pacjenta przed najgroźniejszym z nich — czyli nagłym zatrzymaniem krążenia i oddechu. Pacjenci z zespołem ROHHAD wymagają wielospecjalistycznej opieki i systematycznych badań kontrolnych. (Endokrynol Pol 2016; 67 (2): 226–231)

Composite coatings consisting of a nanocrystalline Ni–W alloy matrix reinforced with ZrO2 particles (average size of 50 nm) were synthesized by electrochemical deposition assisted by an external ultrasonic field. The Ni–W/ZrO2 coatings were deposited from aqueous sulphate–citrate electrolytes containing zirconia nanopowder in suspension on steel substrates in a system with a rotating disk electrode (RDE). The influence of relevant processing parameters (i.e., concentration of zirconia powder in plating bath, current density, hydrodynamic conditions, ultrasonic field frequency) on the composite characteristics was discussed. Based on micromechanical (microhardness, Young’s modulus) and microstructural (morphology, phase composition, crystallite size) properties of the coatings, the conditions for electrodeposition of crack-free, homogeneous Ni–W/ZrO2 nanocomposites with enhanced functional properties have been developed

The main aim of the present work was to determine the optimal conditions for electrodeposition of metallic Ni-Mo coatings of enhanced micromechanical properties. These alloys were electrodeposited on the ferritic steel substrate, under galvanostatic regime in a system with a rotating disk electrode (RDE), from an aqueous citrate complex solution containing nickel and molybdenum salts. The effect of the electrolyte solution pH (adjusted by sulphuric acid or ammonia) on the molybdenum content and on deposit quality as well as on the current efficiency of the electrodeposition process, has been studied. It was established that increase of bath pH is correlated with gradual increase of molybdenum content in deposits up to pH 7, where the maximum concentration of Mo(VI) electroactive citrate complex ions [MoO4(Cit)H]4- (Cit= C6H5O7-3 ) in plating bath was observed. In the selected bath of the optimum pH value, the effect of cathodic current density, as a crucial operating parameter which strongly controls the chemical composition and microstructure parameters (e.g. phase compositions, crystallite size), on the mechanical and tribological properties of the resulting coatings has been determined. It has been shown that - under all investigated current density range - crack-free, well adherent Ni-Mo coatings, characterized by microhardness of 6.5-7.8 GPa, were obtained. Alloys deposited at higher tested current densities (above 3.5 A/dm2) were characterized by compact and uniform microstructure, and thus had the highest wear and friction resistance

This study aimed to determine the effects of plant species on the biological parameters of Tetranychus urticae Koch and the time of mite infestation on plant physiology in Ocimum basilicum L., Melissa officinalis L. and Salvia officinalis L. Mite infestation induced various levels of oxidative stress depending on plant species and the duration of infestation. Host plants affected T. urticae life table parameters. The low level of susceptibility was characteristic of S. officinalis, which appeared to be the least infected plant species and reduced mites demographic parameters. Infested leaves of S. officinalis contained elevated levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) compared to control. In addition, higher membrane lipid peroxidation and higher activity of guaiacol peroxidase (GPX) and lower activity of catalase (CAT) were recorded with a longer mite infestation. In contrast, O. basilicum appeared to be a suitable host on which T. urticae could develop and increase in number. In basil leaves, increasing levels of hydrogen peroxide and MDA with elevated GPX activity and strongly decreased catalase activity were recorded. Knowledge of the differences in mite susceptibility of the tested medicinal plants described in this study has the potential to be applied in breeding strategies and integrated T. urticae pest management in medicinal plant cultivations

Background: Rhodotorula glutinis is capable of synthesizing numerous valuable metabolites with extensive potential industrial usage. This paper reports the effect of initial culture medium pH on growth and protein, lipid, and carotenoid biosynthesis by R. glutinis. Results: The highest biomass yield was obtained in media with pH 4.0–7.0, and the value after 72 h was 17.2–19.4 gd.w./L. An initial pH of the medium in the range of 4.0–7.0 has no significant effect on the protein (38.5–41.3 g/100 gd.w.), lipid (10.2–12.7 g/100 gd.w.), or carotenoid (191.7–202.9 \u3bcg/gd.w.) content in the biomass or on the profile of synthesized fatty acids and carotenoids. The whole pool of fatty acids was dominated by oleic (48.1–53.4%), linoleic (21.4–25.1%), and palmitic acids (13.0–15.8%). In these conditions, the yeast mainly synthesized torulene (43.5–47.7%) and \u3b2-carotene (34.7–38.6%), whereas the contribution of torularhodin was only 12.1–16.8%. Cultivation in medium with initial pH 3.0 resulted in a reduction in growth (13.0 gd.w./L) and total carotenoid (115.8 \u3bcg/gd.w.), linoleic acid (11.5%), and torularhodin (4.5%) biosynthesis. Conclusion: The different values of initial pH of the culture medium with glycerol and deproteinized potato wastewater had a significant effect on the growth and protein, lipid, and carotenoid biosynthesis by R. glutinis
