Classroom behavior management practices in kindergarten classrooms: An observation study.
The main purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the types of management practices that teachers use when disturbing behaviors occur in their classrooms. Teachers and children were observed in 14 kindergartens during daily classroom activities. Data was collected through the use of observation checklists, documents, and teacher’s short interviews. The present study distinguishes the classroom management practices into two broad categories: positive non - punitive practices and negative punitive practices. The results showed that teachers combine most of the non - punitive practices such as, establishing and re-establishing rules, encouraging children to be responsible, promoting students to discuss a topic involving behavior, emotions or situations of concern, etc.,  with punitive practices such as verbal reprimand, intervention by yelling etc. Research has yielded important information that has practical implications for the improvement of classroom behavior management practices
Effective teaching
In this paper I intend to support the hypothetical statement attributed to Socrates in Murray\u27s (1994) article, namely that \u27Excellent teaching is that which produces learning and understanding.\u27 If I am wrong in what I say it is your business to take up the argument and refute me
mista, isto é, combinando abordagens quantitativas e qualitativas.
This thesis is focused on the learning of Statistics in the 3rd cycle of basic
education and deals, in particular, with the learning of the theme Boxplots on the
8th grade. The study was developed in three stages: diagnosis, implementation
and evaluation, and employed mixed approach combining quantitative and
qualitative methods. The diagnosis stage studied the responses, given by 332
students of 18 8th grade classes, to a diagnosis test of questions on Functions
and Statistics which were formulated in graphical and tabular contexts. During
this stage, the existence of possible relations between the students’ difficulties
in the two themes Functions and Statistics was studied, also proceeding with a
semiotic analysis of the students’ responses. This group of students also
answered to an attitude scale, adapted from Estrada’s scale (2002), with the
objective of evaluating theirs attitudes towards Statistics. The adapted scale was
also applied on the studied 8th grade class. On the implementation stage, the
research was focused on the studied class. This class was subject to a teaching
intervention on the topic Boxplots privileging the resort to everyday problemsituations,
in a graphical or tabular context, and including worksheets, pair works
and students’ classroom autonomy. During this second stage, a descriptive
analysis was performed on the students’ responses about Boxplots. In the third
stage, an assessment of the teaching intervention was executed. Concretely, the
students’ knowledge and attitude before and after the implementation of the
teaching intervention were compared, and the intervention’s didactic suitability,
a priori and a posteriori, was analyzed recurring to theoretical tools of the
Ontossemiotic Focus of knowledge and Mathematics teaching.
On the totality of the three aforementioned stages of the study, the following
questions were formulated:
1. Do the difficulties of 8th grade students in graphical and tabular
interpretation of functions have repercussions on their difficulties on Statistics
contents?
2. Which are the 8th grade students’ attitudes towards Statistics during
diagnoses phase?
3. Does a teaching intervention highlighting graphical and tabular
representation of everyday situations’ data help the learning of Statistics in the
8th grade?
4. Do 8th grade students’ difficulties in interpreting and analyzing graphical
and tabular representations of localization measures have repercussions on
their difficulties on constructing, interpreting and analyzing Boxplots? From a global analysis, it stands out that: i) there is association between the
difficulties of the students in Functions and Statistics and in Statistics concepts
but it is not strong; ii) the adapted scale of attitudes revealed to have good
psychometric characteristics and to be 4-dimensional with the factors:
Discernment and Statistics Conception (DCE), Disposition and Valorization of
Statistics (DVE), Behavior and Utility of Statistics (CUE) and Aptitude in the
Study of Statistics (AEE);
iii) the teaching strategy revealed itself profitable seeing as the gotten results, in
comparison to those gotten during diagnosis, were globally superior, with a
register of less incidence in semiotic conflicts, also making for a noticeably larger
predisposition to the learning of Statistics, according to results gotten in the
application of the attitudes scale, before and after the teaching intervention; ; iv)
after the teaching intervention, students’ difficulties, in terms of interpreting and
analyzing localization measures of data collections provided by graphical and
tabular representations, lowered in a notorious way. Nevertheless, the same did
not happen in the case of the boxplots, stating that the difficulties in constructing
this type of representation reside in the analysis of dispersion and symmetry and
are related with a poor choice for the scale accuracy and lack of rigor in its
construction. Finally, in the responses’ analysis, conceptual errors and failures
in the procedures and language were detected.
Emerging recommendations of the study point towards the necessity of
increasing the importance given to the teaching of the boxplot theme, based on
the exploration of more problem-situations involving implied concepts. It is also
recommended a special attention to the predisposition to the learning of
Statistics, as a consequence it can influence the learning of Statistics concepts
