Treated plantain peels in diet of broiler chickens
Three hundred (300) one day old Arbor Acre broiler chicks were used in an 8-week study to determine the growth response and nutrient utilization of birds fed varied inclusion of differently treated plantain peel meals (PPM). The birds were randomly assigned to the 10 dietary treatments with three replicates of 10 birds each and arranged in 3x3 factorial layout plus a control. Treatment 1 is the control, diet without inclusion of PPM, Treatment 2, 3, 4 were sundried PPM at 25, 50 and 75% (replacement for maize) respectively; while treatments 5,6,7 and 8,9,10 were sun dried-lye treated and sundried plus phytase supplementation (1g/kg diet). Data were collected on some chemical profile of treated PPM, performance characteristics of broilers and nutrient digestibility of the diet. The results showed that nutrient composition of plantain peel appeared adequate to serve as a feed ingredient in poultry. Increased level of PPM in the diets however, lowered (P<0.05) all the performance traits and digestibility coefficients. Lye treatment and phytase supplementation had most profound effect on repressing the toxic component in PPM. Lye treatment also influenced fibre digestibility positively but depressed (P<0.05) ether extract digestibility. It was concluded that the use of treated PPM in broiler diet did not represent a perfect replacement for maize. However, 25% of lye and enzyme supplemented PPM replacement for maize proved adequate in broilers’ diet. Keywords: plantain peels, anti-metabolic compounds, digestibility, performanc
Face Recognition Using Line Edge Mapping Approach
The research is based on developmeni of an authentication system. Similar to these is the fucial features
authentication method which is a very new and unpopular method of authentication. The method is very unique with
its operation as it doesn't require contact between the individual and the authentication device. The palm and retinal
scanners have motivated the invention of the authentication system Retinal scanners are contactless authentication
methods which scans the venation in the retinal of the individual which is of course unique to human beings. The
technology employed in this work uses picture fuomes from videos, detects fucial features, and or matches the fuce to
the respective individual's face features in the database. Authentication systems are used to identifY or verifY an
individual as well as to distinguish the individual so far identified. This work develops an authentication system that
operates with similar accuracy and speed of the bnman identification
MINDSET OF LIBRARIANS IN THE PROMOTION OF AFRICAN CULTURE VIS-Ă€-VIS NIGERIA AS A NATION
Abstract
This research work focused on the mindset of librarians in the promotion of African Culture Vis – A – Vis Nigeria as a Nation. The culture of a people had been identified as the identity of such people. Taking a cursory look at Nigeria, as a nation in the continent of Africa, the invasion of European world had greatly influenced our ways of life. Libraries established by our colonial masters could not meet our indigenous needs. After independence, efforts were being made to enhance and promote our cultural values. The study unleashed the perception of librarians about our culture with Nigeria as a case study.
The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population for the study consisted of forty – five (45) librarians purposively selected from three (3) university libraries in Nigeria; namely: Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile – Ife; Kenneth Dike Library, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, and the University of Lagos Library, Akoka, Lagos. These university libraries were selected because they are old institutions in the history of Nigeria and they contain resources on cultural artifacts from which generalization was made. Questionnaire was used as instrument for data gathering. Out of forty – Eight (48) questionnaires administered, forty – five (45) were returned valid.
Data gathered were analyzed using simple frequency, percentages and four – point Lickert Scale of Strongly Agreed (SA), Agreed (A), Disagree (D), and Strongly Disagree (SD). A bench mark of 2.5 was set for the weighted mean from which conclusions were drawn.
The result of the findings revealed the perception of Librarians about African culture. The roles they play in its promotion were also identified
Power quality considerations for embedded generation integration in Nigeria: A case study of ogba 33 kV injection substation
The deregulation of the Nigerian power sector has resulted in the quest to explore power generation options for power quality improvement. One of such options is the pattern shift from central power generation to embedded power generation. Network integration of embedded generators (EGs) causes several regulatory, technical and economic issues. This research focuses on power quality challenges that may arise as a result of network integration of embedded generation in a weak electricity networks using Ogba 33 kV injection substation as case study. The embedded generators considered comprised of gas turbine and diesel generators. NEPLAN software was used to perform the load flow analysis with and without EGs connection on the network. This was necessary so as to ascertain the healthiness of the existing distribution network for EGs integration. The power quality issues considered in the study were bus voltage profiles and the total line losses. Simulation results showed that EGs connection improved the voltage profile, for example, bus voltage at PTC 11 kV, improved from 0.881 pu to 0.958 pu while the total active power loss was reduced by 78.16%. The results obtained suggest that the grid is healthy enough to accommodate the EGs with no quality issues
Improving The Thermoplastic Extrusion Process In Cable Manufacturing
Cable manufacturing in a developing country like Nigeria today is faced with a number of problems that affect the
quality of cables produced from extrusion to insulation of conductors. The main cause of the problems is the low and
variable output rate from extruder causing non-uniform conductor diameter which results in insulation surface appearance
defects. These defects manifest in form of pimples, dimples, cracking, air cavity, voids and porosity within the plastics
which are insulation.
The conductor insulation normally used is the Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) which is normally sourced locally or
imported. The locally produced PVC is cheaper in cost than the imported one but at the expense of quality due to
inconsistency in the percentage combination of plasticizers, fillers, stabilizers, lubricants, and other additives required for
producing quality PVC resin for cable applications. If the local manufacturers of PVC are not patronized, it will lead to
employees losing their jobs and most likely their family income with other attending societal ills.
The work in this paper takes a close to look at what should be done to improve the quality of locally produced
PVC at little or no increase in cost. It has been discussed while working with one of the manufacturers that the required
additives to produce an acceptable level of quality PVC resins for cable application are not optimally combined
proportionately. In order to improve the quality oflocal plastics, optimum proportion of the required additives for quality
cable insulation were experimentally determined at a comparable cost and better additive material consumption.
The ratio of weight per charge (Kg/charge) of additives especially plasticizer and chalk gave a good output
comparable in quality to the imported ones. The test results obtained from the analysis of the local plastics with optimum
proportion of additives are comparable to the imported one. The analysis is based on insulation test, cost savings, material
consumption/wastages, viscosity, melt temperature, flows and pressure requirements associated with extrusion process of
thermoplastic
Dwindling Reading Culture In The Internet Era And The Imperative For Lifelong Reading
Abstract
This paper discusses dwindling reading culture in the internet era and presented a succinct imperative for lifelong reading. The paper examined reading, reading culture, lifelong reading, the internet era and its impact on reading culture and the imperative for lifelong reading. There is no doubt that the internet had contributed immensely to education for all. However, the proliferations of the internet and its resources such as social media have brought about shift in concentration from the reading pattern adapted from the inception of civilization to technology freaked society. It emphasized that proliferation of internet and digital media have changed the reading habits and as such it is fast disappearing into the thin air. It also expressed how the internet seems to have reduced the interest in reading of printed materials, vocabulary development, general knowledge and broad mindedness which individuals get from having good reading habits. The paper further identified the format of information resources to read and how to cultivate and sustain life long reading. The paper concluded that right attitude must be inculcated in a child right from infant and parents must encourage their children to read. The study recommended that individual, librarians, book sellers, publishers, teachers, government, mass media and the entertainment industry have distinctive roles to play in restoring our reading culture
Smart Grid Technology Potentials in Nigeria: an Overview
In recent time electricity system in Nigeria has suffered lots
of difficulties that have led to the epileptic electricity supply
without any solution improvement. The poor power system
has affected the economic development of the nation. Despite
all the different strategies of reform embarked on by the
Nigeria government, the energy sector is still not efficient or
reliable. This poor power system is as a result of the
inadequate and inefficient power generation, poor
transmission and distribution facilities, and out worn metering
system used by electricity consumers.
This paper strives to present the way forward for the Nigerian
epileptic electricity by reviewing the power sector as a whole
and smart grid potential. This paper compare the traditional
grid with the smart grid, looking at the smart potentials that
the Nigeria grid can achieve reliability and efficiency.
Several benefits can be achieved by the power supplied to the
Nigeria masses to have a good quality and reliable supply if
the smart grid potentials are considered.
Smart grid is an emerging technology that can lead to the
modernization of the electrical power system, comprising of
communication systems with different storage technology,
distributed generation and loads. The content of this paper is
to manage energy use more efficiently, save money on
electricity, and provide technology and processes that are
integrated into the appliances and devices consumers use in
their everyday lives, all without causing significant disruptio
Blogging Medical Information Sources to Users: the Case of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti Medical Library
The ubiquitous Internet continues to increase sources of information to information seekers in this
present age as information are lodged in different web platforms ranging from digital libraries,
databases, repositories, and lately social media platforms. More often than not, information seekers are
limited in their quest to popular search engines as Google, inadvertently short-changing themselves of
the other many sources that search results may not reveal. So, as we were faced with the need to bring
our databases and other useful electronic resources together, using a Web 2.0 tool, we deployed the
weblog so as to better serve our users and help them gain access to useful information they might have
been missing. In this paper, we describedhow we used weblog to meet the need and create access to
medical information sources and resources for easy retrieval
Preservation and conservation of electronic information resources in university libraries in Southwest, Nigeria
This study examined the preservation and conservation of electronic information resources (EIRs) in private university libraries in South – West, Nigeria. Three objectives were examined for the study namely; causes of deterioration of EIRs in private university libraries in South West, Nigeria; techniques for the preservation of EIRs in private university libraries in South – West, Nigeria and the challenges facing the preservation of EIRs in private university libraries in South West, Nigeria. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Total of (13) private university libraries in South-West Nigeria were selected for the study. A total of 83library staffs were selected. Out of 83 questionnaires distributed, 75 questionnaires were returned and found useful. The study found out that the effect of magnetism, viral attack and natural disaster were to a great extent the causes of deterioration of EIRs, most of the techniques adopted by these private university libraries were refreshing, emulation and technology preservation. Identified challenges to the preservation of EIRs were inadequate funding, lack of trained ICT personnel for preservation process and inadequate ICT infrastructure. Based on the findings the study recommended that Private university libraries must make online subscription to anti–virus software priority, organize constant trainings, allot more funds for the development of EIRs, partner and collaborate with international agencies, and buckle up in the area of disaster preparedness to reduce catastrophic damage and loss of EIRs
PERCEIVED INFLUENCE OF BIBLIOTHERAPY ON THE REHABILITATION OF DRUG ADDICTS IN SOUTH-WEST, NIGERIAN TEACHING HOSPITALS: AN INVESTIGATIVE STUDY
This study investigated perceived influence of bibliotherapy on the rehabilitation of drug addicts in South-west Nigerian teaching hospitals. The study specifically identified the pattern of information utilisation by drug addicts; examined approaches used by medical librarians in administering bibliotherapy and perception of drug addicts on behaviour modification using bibliotherapy. The survey research design was used for the study and the population of the respondents consisted of Forty-Eight (48) drug addicts purposively selected. Questionnaires were used as instrument for data gathering and were pretested for validity and analysed using frequency, percentages and four-point Likert scale. Hypothesis was also tested using spearman’s rank correlation coefficient. Out of 48 questionnaires administered, 45 were returned and found useful representing 94% response rate. The survey revealed that respondents used specific reading materials for information with mean of 2.9; they used novels, short stories, poetry, plays and biographies to improve their psychological wellbeing with mean of 3.1; it was also revealed that they read online books on addiction and recovery with mean of 2.6, among others. It was revealed that bibliotherapy assisted them to recognize when they were likely to relapse; it assisted them to avoid and cope with relapse and encouraged abstinence from addictive substances. The result of the correlation indicated a low positive relationship between pattern of information utilisation and behaviour modification. Hence, the null hypothesis was rejected. It was recommended that health information professionals should work with mental health practitioners in providing access to information that would enhance behaviour modification among drug addicts
