Influence of Exogenously Supplemented Caffeine on Cell Division, Germination, and Growth of Economically Important Plants

Caffeine is a plant secondary metabolite of antiherbivory, allelopathic, and antibacterial activity. In our previous study, caffeine was shown to be an effective agent toward plant pathogenic bacteria causing high economic losses in crop production worldwide. Current study indicated that growth media supplementation with soil or plant extract did not interfere with antibacterial action of caffeine against Clavibacter michiganensis, Dickeya solani, Pectobacterium atrosepticum, Pectobacterium carotovorum, Pseudomonas syringae, Ralstonia solanacearum, and Xanthomonas campestris. The impact of caffeine on plant cell division, seed germination and growth of economically important plants was evaluated to assess possible applicability of caffeine in plant protection field. Caffeine impaired plant cell division process and inhibited in vitro germination of tomato and lettuce. Regeneration of potato explants was also negatively affected by the addition of caffeine. However, caffeine spraying or watering of tomato, lettuce and cabbage grown in soil did not impair plant development. Although the tested plants accumulated caffeine, its inner quantity was reduced by peeling and/or cooking. According to the results, caffeine warrants additional attention as a useful, natural compound designated for the control of bacterial plant pathogens. Proposed treatment seems promising especially in the case of providing protection for overwinter-stored table potato tubers

Fermented juices as reducing and capping agents for the biosynthesis of size-defined spherical gold nanoparticles

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are of scientific and industrial significance; however, the traditional synthesis methods employ toxic compounds. Hence, non-toxic and environmentally friendly AuNPs synthesis methods are of special interest. Here, AuNPs were produced using four solutions of fermented grape juices. UV/Vis absorption spectrophotometry and transmission electron microscopy indicated that AuNPs synthesized with a solution based on semi-sweet red grapes were mostly spherical with narrow size distribution (average diameter of 82.1 ± 36.2 nm). AuNPs of similar spherical morphology but smaller size were obtained using a solution based on semi-dry red grapes (57.1 ± 16.4 nm). A large variety of AuNPs shapes and broader size distribution were produced when solutions based on semi-sweet or dry white grapes were applied. In this case, the average sizes of the AuNPs were 271.6 ± 130.2 nm and 76.0 ± 47.2 nm, respectively. Using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Au, C, and O were detected, confirming formation of biogenic AuNPs in all cases. Mie theory calculations for AuNPs synthesized with the aid of solutions based on red grapes suggest that their optical properties are different and best suited for distinct downstream applications. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the Folin-Ciocalteu assay, and the Bertrand's method were used to examine bioactive compounds present in the solutions applied for synthesis. Phenolics, and to a lesser extent reducing sugars, were identified as likely playing a significant role in reduction and stabilization of the AuNPs. These results display the great potential of these solutions for green synthesis of size defined AuNPs, and illustrate that different grape varieties may be used to obtain AuNPs with unique properties. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki blisko dziesięcioletnich badań hydrodynamicznych i hydrochemicznych skutków likwidacji kopalni rud cynku i ołowiu „Trzebionka” w rejonie chrzanowskim. The paper presents results of almost 10-year observation of hydrodynamic and hydrochemistry changes in the Triassic aquifer, after the closure of the Zn-Pb “Trzebionka” mine (Chrzanów area). Recovery of the natural hydrodynamic pressure in the rocks and associated chemical processes adversely affected the groundwater quality of the Triassic aquifer and resulted in the appearance of water on the surface. It leads to new challenges for local authorities, entrepreneurs and residents of the area

Changes in the chemical composition of groundwater in Quaternary aquifer in Old Krakow, Poland (years 2002-2012)

The chemical composition of the Quaternary aquifer in Old Krakow was studied. Thirty water samples were collected from wells in the years 2002, 2009 and 2012. The water chemistry of groundwater in Old Krakow is associated mainly with anthropogenic impact. The water samples represent manly five-ion type: Ca-Na-Cl-HCO3-SO4, Ca-Na-Cl-SO4-HCO3 and Ca-Na-HCO3-SO4-Cl, the multi-ion water type is typical for polluted water. The results of groundwater studies in Krakow between 2002 and 2012 showed that the chemical composition of water is being constantly affected by ancient human activities. The predominance of chloride and nitrate ions can be connected with a large number of the contamination sources. The main sources of contamination are accumulations of the anthropogenic soils and the cultural deposits containing organic, communal waste and sewage which were gathered in the oldest parts of Krakow
