    Two Particle Azimuthal Correlations in 4.2A GeV C+Ta Collisions

    Two particle azimuthal correlations are studied in 4.2A GeV C+Ta collisions observed with the 2-m propane bubble chamber exposed at JINR Dubna Synchrophasotron. The correlations are analyzed both for protons and negative pions, and their dependence on the collision centrality, rapidity and rapidity difference is investigated. It is found that protons show a weak back-to-back correlations, while a side-by-side correlations are observed for negative pions. Restricting both protons to the target or projectile fragmentation region, the side-by-side correlations are observed for protons also. Using the two particle correlation function, the flow analysis is performed and intensity of directed flow is determined without event-by event estimation of the reaction plane.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    In-medium effects on K-0 mesons in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

    We present the transverse momentum spectra and rapidity distributions of pi(-) and K-S(0) in Ar + KCl reactions at a beam kinetic energy of 1.756 A GeV measured with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES). The reconstructed K-S(0) sample is characterized by good event statistics for a wide range in momentum and rapidity. We compare the experimental pi(-) and K-S(0) distributions to predictions by the Isospin Quantum Molecular Dynamics (IQMD) model. The model calculations show that K-S(0) at low transverse momenta constitute a particularly well-suited tool to investigate the kaon in-medium potential. Our K-S(0) data suggest a strong repulsive in-medium K-0 potential of about 40 MeV strength.We gratefully acknowledge the useful discussions with J. Aichelin and H. Oeschler.     A versatile method for simulating pp -> ppe+e- and dp -> pne+e-p_spec reactions

    We have developed a versatile software package for the simulation of di-electron production in pppp and dpdp collisions at SIS energies. Particular attention has been paid to incorporate different descriptions of the Dalitz decay Δ→Ne+e−\Delta \to N e^+e^- via a common interface. In addition, suitable parameterizations for the virtual bremsstrahlung process NN→NNe+e−NN \to NN e^+e^- based on one-boson exchange models have been implemented. Such simulation tools with high flexibility of the framework are important for the interpretation of the di-electron data taken with the HADES spectrometer and the design of forthcoming experiments

    Inclusive Charged Hadron Elliptic Flow in Au + Au Collisions at √ˢᴺᴺ = 7.7-39 GeV

    A systematic study is presented for centrality, transverse momentum pT, and pseudorapidity (η) dependence of the inclusive charged hadron elliptic flow v2 at midrapidity (|η| \u3c 1.0) in Au + Au collisions at √ˢᴺᴺ = 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, and 39 GeV. The results obtained with different methods, including correlations with the event plane reconstructed in a region separated by a large pseudorapidity gap and four-particle cumulants (v2{4}), are presented to investigate nonflow correlations and v2 fluctuations. We observe that the difference between v2{2} and v2{4} is smaller at the lower collision energies. Values of v2, scaled by the initial coordinate space eccentricity, v2/ϵ, as a function of pT are larger in more central collisions, suggesting stronger collective flow develops in more central collisions, similar to the results at higher collision energies. These results are compared to measurements at higher energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider √ˢᴺᴺ = 62.4 and 200 GeV) and at the Large Hadron Collider (Pb + Pb collisions at √ˢᴺᴺ = 2.76 TeV). The v2(pT) values for fixed pT rise with increasing collision energy within the pT range studied (\u3c2 GeV/c). A comparison to viscous hydrodynamic simulations is made to potentially help understand the energy dependence of v2(pT). We also compare the v2 results to UrQMD and AMPT transport model calculations, and physics implications on the dominance of partonic versus hadronic phases in the system created at beam energy scan energies are discussed

    Precision Measurement of the Longitudinal Double-Spin Asymmetry for Inclusive Jet Production in Polarized Proton Collisions at √s= 200GeV

    We report a new measurement of the midrapidity inclusive jet longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, ALL, in polarized pp collisions at center-of-mass energy √s = 200 GeV. The STAR data place stringent constraints on polarized parton distribution functions extracted at next-to-leading order from global analyses of inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), semi-inclusive DIS, and RHIC pp data. The measured asymmetries provide evidence at the 3σ level for positive gluon polarization in the Bjorken-x region x \u3e 0.05

    Beam Energy Dependence of Moments of the Net-Charge Multiplicity Distributions in Au + Au Collisions at RHIC

    We report the first measurements of the moments-mean (M), variance (σ2), skewness (S), and kurtosis (κ)-of the net-charge multiplicity distributions at midrapidity in Au + Au collisions at seven energies, ranging from √ˢᶰᶰ = 7.7 to 200 GeV, as a part of the Beam Energy Scan program at RHIC. The moments are related to the thermodynamic susceptibilities of net charge, and are sensitive to the location of the QCD critical point. We compare the products of the moments, σ2/M, Sσ, and κσ2, with the expectations from Poisson and negative binomial distributions (NBDs). The Sσ values deviate from the Poisson baseline and are close to the NBD baseline, while the κσ2 values tend to lie between the two. Within the present uncertainties, our data do not show nonmonotonic behavior as a function of collision energy. These measurements provide a valuable tool to extract the freeze-out parameters in heavy-ion collisions by comparing with theoretical models. © American Physical Societ

    Directed and Elliptic Flow of Charged Particles in Cu + Cu Collisions at √ˢᶰᶰ =22.4 GeV

    This paper reports results for directed flow v1 and elliptic flow v2 of charged particles in Cu + Cu collisions at √ˢᶰᶰ = 22.4 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The measurements are for the 0-60% most central collisions, using charged particles observed in the STAR detector. Our measurements extend to 22.4-GeV Cu + Cu collisions the prior observation that v1 is independent of the system size at 62.4 and 200 GeV and also extend the scaling of v1 with η/ybeam to this system. The measured v2pT in Cu + Cu collisions is similar for root √ˢᶰᶰ throughout the range 22.4 to 200 GeV. We also report a comparison with results from transport model (ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics and multiphase transport model) calculations. The model results do not agree quantitatively with the measured v1(η), v2pT, and v2(η)

    Enabling comparison of UrQMD with Geant4 hadronic models

    Geant4 has an abundant set of physics models that handle the diverse interaction of particles with matter across a wide energy range. However, there are also many well established reaction codes currently used in the same fields where Geant4 is applied. One such code is the Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model. In order to take advantage of the UrQMD code, we create a tool to enable comparisons among UrQMD and Geant4 hadronic models. This tool allows a user to process the output file of UrQMD through Geant4 toolkit, while at the same time, can choose among different Geant4 hadronic model generators. As an example, the UrQMD model is compared with the HARP-CDP experimental data and with the Binary and FRITIOF generators, in the framework of Geant4. It is shown that the UrQMD model can better reproduce charged pion production for p+Cu and Pb interactions at 3, 8 and 15 GeV/c, and is a good candidate for Geant4 hadronic models.Comment: 17 pages, 5 Figure

    J/ψ Production at Low Pᵀ in Au + Au and Cu + Cu Collisions at √ˢᴺᴺ = 200 GeV With the STAR Detector

    The J/ψ pT spectrum and nuclear modification factor (RAA) are reported for pT \u3c 5 GeV/c and |y| \u3c 1 from 0% to 60% central Au + Au and Cu + Cu collisions at √ˢᴺᴺ = 200 GeV at STAR. A significant suppression of pT - integrated J/ψ production is observed in central Au + Au events. The Cu + Cu data are consistent with no suppression, although the precision is limited by the available statistics. RAA in Au + Au collisions exhibits a strong suppression at low transverse momentum and gradually increases with pT. The data are compared to high-pT STAR results and previously published BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider results. Comparing with model calculations, it is found that the invariant yields at low pT are significantly above hydrodynamic flow predictions but are consistent with models that include color screening and regeneration
