The Alleviation of Slum Poverty in the Philippines: A Critical Examination of Poverty Reduction Programs

My study aims to analyze the dynamics of slum poverty in the Philippines, as well as the success and failures of federal government poverty reduction strategies. This will be achieved by connecting theory and practice through an analysis of various development theories that are related to the outcomes of current federal poverty reduction strategies. Based on original field research conducted in the Philippines, the findings indicate that federal poverty reduction programs have not been effectively implemented due to institutional failures rooted in extractive political and economic institutions. The study concludes with policy recommendations that argue for a more comprehensive ‘capabilities’ approach which focuses on institutional reform and the expansion of political and civil liberties. Unless federal poverty reduction strategies address the underlying causes of poverty as rooted in institutional failures, efforts to alleviate it will not be effective over the long-term

The author seeks to give importance to production and cultural knowledge dedicating his gaze to that object often overlooked and undervalued by the "intellectual strata" of society.“Versos Quentes e Baiões de Viola: Cantorias e Cantadores do/no Nordeste Brasileiro no Século XX” (EDUFCG, 279 páginas) do historiador e Pós-doutor em etnomusicologia Francisco José Gomes Damasceno, traz uma reflexão panorâmica e aprofundada sobre o aspecto da cantoria de viola no nordeste brasileiro durante o século vinte, dialogando com importantes nomes da cultura popular nordestina como, Câmara Cascudo, Leonardo Mota, Elba Braga Ramalho, entre outros. O autor busca dar importância à produção e ao saber cultural dedicando seu olhar a esse objeto muitas vezes esquecido e desvalorizado pelas “camadas intelectuais” da sociedade

The use of alternative foods to replace traditionally used foods can be a viable alternative to reduce costs in the formulation of fish feed. Babassu (Orbygnia speciosa) has emerged as an alternative to replace some ingredients that burden the diet. The objective was to evaluate the economic viability of the inclusion of babassu meal in replacement of soybean meal in the diet for Nile tilapia. 240 Nile tilapia fingerlings were used, which were distributed in 16 water tanks of 500 liters, in a completely randomized design, with 4 treatments and 4 replications. The treatments were represented by the inclusion of babassu in the diet: T1 with 0% (not including babassu); T2 with 2.5% (25% inclusion), T3 with 5% (50% inclusion), and T4 with 7.5% (75% inclusion). The experiment lasted 60 days. There were no statistical differences (p>0.05) in relation to the economic variables. However, it was observed that the price per kg of the ration of the treatment without the inclusion of babassu is equal to the treatment with the inclusion of 7.5% of babassu. Demonstrating that the replacement of babassu by soybean meal is economically viable, considering the large-scale feed production. It is concluded that the use of 75% inclusion of babassu meal in replacement of soybean meal in diets for tilapia up to 60 days of cultivation was economically viable.

Learning from natural sediments to tackle microplastics challenges: A multidisciplinary perspective

    Get PDF
Although the study of microplastics in the aquatic environment incorporates a diversity of research fields, it is still in its infancy in many aspects while comparable topics have been studied in other disciplines for decades. In particular, extensive research in sedimentology can provide valuable insights to guide future microplastics research. To advance our understanding of the comparability of natural sediments with microplastics, we take an interdisciplinary look at the existing literature describing particle properties, transport processes, sampling techniques and ecotoxicology. Based on our analysis, we define seven research goals that are essential to improve our understanding of microplastics and can be tackled by learning from natural sediment research, and identify relevant tasks to achieve each goal. These goals address (1) the description of microplastic particles, (2) the interaction of microplastics with environmental substances, (3) the vertical distribution of microplastics, (4) the erosion and deposition behaviour of microplastics, (5) the impact of biota on microplastic transport, (6) the sampling methods and (7) the microplastic toxicity. When describing microplastic particles, we should specifically draw from the knowledge of natural sediments, for example by using shape factors or applying methods for determining the principal dimensions of non-spherical particles. Sediment transport offers many fundamentals that are transferable to microplastic transport, and could be usefully applied. However, major knowledge gaps still exist in understanding the role of transport modes, the influence of biota on microplastic transport, and the importance and implementation of the dynamic behaviour of microplastics as a result of time-dependent changes in particle properties in numerical models. We give an overview of available sampling methods from sedimentology and discuss their suitability for microplastic sampling, which can be used for creating standardised guidelines for future application with microplastics. In order to comprehensively assess the ecotoxicology of microplastics, a distinction must be made between the effects of the polymers themselves, their physical form, the plastic-associated chemicals and the attached pollutants. This review highlights areas where we can rely on understanding and techniques from sediment research - and areas where we need new, microplastic-specific knowledge - and synthesize recommendations to guide future, interdisciplinary microplastic research
