Experiments with embedded system design at UMinho and AIT
Nowadays, embedded systems are central to modern life,
mainly due to the scientific and technological advances of the last decades
that started a new reality in which the embedded systems market has
been growing steadily, along with a monthly or even weekly emergence
of new products with different applications across several domains. This
embedded system ubiquity was the drive for the following question ”Why
should we focus on embedded systems design?” that was answered in [1,
2] with the following points: (1) high and fast penetration in products
and services due to the integration of networking, operating system and
database capabilities, (2) very strategic field economically and (3) a new
and relatively undefined subject in academic environment. Other adja-
cent questions have been raised such as ”Why is the design of embedded
systems special?”. The answer for this last question is based mainly on
several problems raised by the new technologies, such as the need for
more human resources in specialized areas and high learning curve for
system designers. As pointed in [1], these problems can prevent many
companies from adopting these new technologies or force them not to
respond timely in mastering these technological and market challenges.
In this paper, it is described how staff at ESRG-UMinho

faced the embedded systems challenges at several levels. It starts to de-
scribe the development of the educational context for the new technolo-
gies and show how our Integrated Master Curriculum in Industrial Elec-
tronics and Computer Engineering has been adapted to satisfy the needs
of the major university customers, the industry
Sleep quality and chronic pain in community dwelling older adults: preliminary results
Background: The natural process of human aging causes biopsychosocial alterations, which can trigger chronic pain and poor sleep quality in older adults. Considering the high prevalence and possible association between these two clinical conditions, special attention from public health policies is necessary to provide quality aging.
Objective: To verify if there is an association between chronic pain and sleep quality among older adults in the community.
Methods: A quantitative, cross-sectional study on the association of chronic pain with the sleep quality among older people in the community. Participants were evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI); Visual Analog Pain scale; questionnaires of sociodemographic and clinical data, assessment of cognitive impairment through the Mini Mental State Examination, and anthropometric assessments. The data were submitted to descriptive statistics. The means between the groups of older people with and without chronic pain were compared using the Student's t test for independent samples and Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) was used to analyze the association of PSQI with pain intensity.
Results: In total, 51 older women were included, with a mean age of 70 ± 8 years. The majority had a low level of education (52.9%), low financial income (64.7%), and chronic pain (56.9%). It was found that the older adults with chronic pain presented worse sleep quality when compared those without chronic pain and a moderate (r=0.595) and significant (p<0.01) correlation between sleep quality and the intensity of chronic pain was observed.
Conclusion: Older adults in the community with chronic pain present worse sleep quality when compared to the older adults without pain. There is a strong correlation between the intensity of chronic pain and sleep quality in older adults; the greater the intensity of pain, the worse the sleep quality
Genotoxic and Cytotoxic Safety Evaluation of Papain (Carica papaya L.) Using In Vitro Assays
Papain, a phytotherapeutic agent, has been used in the treatment of eschars and as a debriding chemical agent to remove damaged or necrotic tissue of pressure ulcers and gangrene. Its benefits in these treatments are deemed effective, since more than 5000 patients, at the public university hospital at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, have undergone papain treatment and presented satisfactory results. Despite its extensive use, there is little information about toxic and mutagenic properties of papain.
This work evaluated the toxic and mutagenic potential of papain and its potential antioxidant activity against induced-H2O2 oxidative stress in Escherichia coli strains.
Cytotoxicity assay, Growth inhibition test, WP2-Mutoxitest and Plasmid-DNA treatment, and agarose gel electrophoresis were used to investigate if papain would present any toxic or mutagenic potential as well as if papain would display antioxidant properties.
Papain exhibited negative results for all tests. This agent presented an activity protecting cells against H2O2-induced mutagenesis
Development and Characterization of Aloe vera Mucilaginous-Based Hydrogels for Psoriasis Treatment
The Aloe vera (L.) Burman f. pulp extract (AE), obtained from the inner parts of Aloe vera leaves, is rich in polysaccharides, including glucomannans, acemannans, pectic compounds, cellulose, and hemicelluloses; acemannan and glucomannan are considered the two main components responsible for most of the plant’s therapeutical properties. Besides having anti-inflammatory activity, these polysaccharides accelerate wound healing and promote skin regeneration, thus they can be utilized in healing products. The objective of this study was to develop Aloe vera mucilaginous-based hydrogels for topical use in psoriasis treatment. The hydrogels were prepared with 80% w/w of A. vera mucilaginous gel, evaluating two distinct polymers as the gelling agent: 1% carbopol 940 (FC1 and FC2) or 2% hydroxyethylcellulose (FH3 and FH4). FC1, FC2, FH3 and FH4 were evaluated for their organoleptic characteristics, rheological properties, pH and glucomannan content. Polysaccharide fractions (PFs) were extracted from the AE and used as a group of chemical markers and characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (H NMR). The quantification of these markers in the raw material (AE) and in the hydrogels was carried out using spectrophotometric techniques in the UV-VIS region. The hydrogels-based hydroxyethylcellulose (FH3 and FH4) had glucomannan contents of 6.76 and 4.01 mg/g, respectively. Formulations with carbopol, FC1 and FC2, had glucomannan contents of 8.69 and 9.17 mg/g, respectively, an ideal pH for application on psoriasis, in addition to good spreadability and pseudoplastic and thixotropic behavior. Considering these results, hydrogel FC1 was evaluated for its keratolytic activity in a murine model of hyperkeratinization. For that, 0.5 mL of test formulations FC1 and FPC (0.05% clobetasol propionate cream) were topically applied to the proximal region of adult rats daily for 13 days. After euthanasia, approximately 2.5 cm of the proximal portion of each animal’s tail was cut and placed in 10% buffered formalin. Then, each tail fragment was processed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (HE), and the results obtained from the histological sections indicated a 61% reduction in stratum corneum for animals treated with the A. vera hydrogel (FC1G) and 66% for animals treated with clobetasol propionate (PCG), compared to the group of animals that did not receive treatment (WTG). This study led to the conclusion that compared to the classic treatment (clobetasol propionate), the 80% A. vera hydrogel showed no significant difference, being effective in controlling hyperkeratinization

POLIMORFISMO GENÉTICO DA αS1-CASEÍNA EM CABRAS DO SEMIÁRIDO DO NORDESTE BRASILEIRO
The population of native and mixed-breeds (MB) goats from the Northeast of Brazil is little characterized, despite the importancegiven to studies of genetic resources in domestic animals. With the objective of studying the polymorphism of the αS1-casein gene in genomic DNA of Moxotó and mixed-breed goats from the semi-arid of Brazilian Northeast, by the PCR-RFLP (Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Lenght Polymorfism) technique,215 Moxotó and mixed-breeed goats, which came from the Brazilian states of Pernambuco, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará, were used. Based on the allelic frequency from the breeds studied, there was no significant difference (p> 0.05) among the populations of each studied state and between Moxotó and mixed-breed animals. In face of the detection of a highest presence of allele B (strong) from the αS1-casein gene in the animals studied, it is admitted the possibility that, phenotypically, these animals present the characteristic of a strong production of proteins, an important feature for the milk destined to cheese production, favoring the goat raising in the region
Identification of phlebotomine sand fly (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Atlantic forest fragments and their dispersal to urban area
Abstract The geographical distribution of sand flies in Brazil has been the subject of some studies, yet there is no information about the phlebotomine fauna in João Pessoa, State of Paraíba, Brazil. The aim of this work is to evaluate the occurrence and distribution of sand flies in the Atlantic forest fragments and to evaluate a possible dispersion in 06 nearby districts. Light traps were used during three consecutive nights, supplemented by an aspirator during the dry period and rainy season. A total of 222 sand flies were found, 143 (130 males and 13 females) in the Atlantic forest, and 79 in urban areas. During the entire dry season, three species of phlebotomine sand flies were recorded in 11 forest fragments, Lutzomyia longipalpis, Lu. migonei and Lu. whitmani. During the rainy season, only Lu. longipalpis was found. This was the only species identified in the studied neighborhoods during both seasons. The differences in diversity of sand flies encountered between natural habitats and urban areas may thus be correlated mostly with adaptations to particular habitats and availability of food. One species (Lu. longipalpis) appears to be rapidly adapting to urban areas because of deforestation
