    O efeito da raça, idade, número de partos e fase da lactação na incidência de mastites clínicas em caprinos leiteiros

    Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Medicina VeterináriaA mastite é uma inflamação da glândula mamária caracterizada por alterações físicas, químicas e bacteriológicas no leite e por alterações patológicas no úbere dos animais. A mastite é uma das doenças com maior impacto económico e que pode resultar em grandes perdas financeiras se não detetada e tratada, uma vez que pode conduzir à morte de alguns animais e à diminuição da produção e qualidade do leite. A prevalência anual da mastite é influenciada por vários fatores relacionados com o animal, o agente patogénico e o meio ambiente. O objetivo deste estudo foi perceber o efeito da raça, idade dos animais e número de partos na incidência de mastites clínicas e estudar a sua distribuição de acordo com a fase da lactação no ano de 2016 numa determinada exploração de caprinos leiteiros. O estudo envolveu no total cerca de 1091 animais cuja informação relativa a cada um dos parâmetros a analisar foi fornecida pelo software de gestão da exploração. Nem todos os animais foram elegíveis para as diferentes análises, sendo que para a avaliação da idade foram englobados 846 animais, para o número de partos 726 animais e para a fase da lactação apenas 48 animais. Para o estudo do efeito da raça foram englobados os 1091 animais. Foi realizada uma regressão linear para determinar a média, desvio-padrão e valor-p para a raça, idade e número de partos. Foram observadas diferenças na incidência de mastites clínicas entre animais da raça Alpina e da raça Saanen, sendo mais incidente na raça Alpina (p ≈0,04); entre animais com um ano de idade e animais com 3, 4 e 5 anos de idade (p ≈0,011), sendo mais incidente em animais com 1 ano de idade; e entre fêmeas primíparas e multíparas (p ≈0,015), em que a incidência de mastites clínicas foi maior em fêmeas primíparas. Para a fase da lactação foi somente calculada a percentagem de casos de mastite clínica nas diferentes fases de lactação, tendo-se verificado que 52% dos animais apresentaram mastite clínica no primeiro terço da lactação.ABSTRACT - Mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary gland being characterized by physical, chemical and bacteriological changes in milk and by pathological changes in the udder of animals. Mastitis is one of the diseases with greatest economic impact and can result in large financial losses if not detected and treated promptly, as it can lead to the death of some animals and a decrease in milk quality and production. The annual prevalence of mastitis is influenced by several factors which are related to the animal, the pathogen and the environment. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of breed, age and parity on the incidence of clinical mastitis, as well as to study the distribution of clinical mastitis according to the lactation stage in 2016 of dairy goats on a given farm. The study involved a total of 1091 animals, the information on each of the parameters to be analysed was provided by the farm. Not all animals were eligible for the different analyses. For the evaluation of the age, 846 animals were included, 726 animals for parity and only 48 animals were included for the lactation stage. To study the effect of the breed all animals were included. A linear regression analysis determined the mean, standard deviation and p-value for breed, age and parity. Significant differences were observed between Alpine and Saanen goats, being more prevalent in Alpine goats (p ≈0.04); between the age of the animals, being more prevalent in goats with 1 year-old when compared with 3, 4 and 5 year-old goats (p ≈0.011); and amongst primiparous and multiparous goats, being more prevalent in primiparous goats (p ≈0,015), For the lactation stage, only the percentage of cases of clinical mastitis in the different stages of lactation was calculated. We concluded that in the year of 2016 the incidence of mastitis occurred mostly in the first third of lactation.N/

    Assessment of Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Field Exposure Induced by Base Stations in Several Micro-Environments in France

    Recently, the monitoring of the radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) exposure induced by cellular networks has received a great deal of attention. In this work, a set of 70 microenvironments (MEs) located in urban and rural areas are selected in France under, on the one hand, the French Beyond5G project, and on the other hand, the 5G expOsure, causaL effects and rIsk perception through citizen engagement (GOLIAT) EU project. The purpose of this study is to assess the RF-EMF DL exposure in residential areas, downtowns, business areas, train stations, and public transport rides. For that, we employ the personal ExpoM-RF4 dosimeter placed inside a backpack to perform the measurements in different MEs. To take into consideration the effect of the presence of the human body near the dosimeter, we propose a correction approach that is mainly based on comparing the measurements given by ExpoM-RF4 to the ones provided by a reference system using the Tektronix real-time spectrum analyzer (RTSA) far from the body. Then, we use metrics, such as the quadratic mean, standard deviation, and median of the electric (E) field to carry out a comparative study between different MEs with different RF bands. It was found that the RF-EMF exposure levels for all MEs are well below the maximum allowable exposure limit prescribed by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). In addition, we perform clustering analyses using the K-Means technique to group the MEs with comparable exposure levels. The results show that the exposure level is low, but generally higher in MEs located in Paris than in the other considered areas (i.e., Massy and three villages, namely Igny, Bures-sur-Yvette and Gif-Sur-Yvette). For example, we observe that outdoor MEs can be grouped into three clusters, where the average total E fields (ATEFs) are 0.77 V/m, 0.35 V/m, and 0.08 V/m for the MEs belonging to the first, second and third clusters, respectively. Note that the first cluster here mainly contains the MEs located in Paris. This can be explained by the important number of antennas deployed in that area to serve the huge amount of users. We also observe few locations with exceptions confirming the presence of heterogeneous environments in the vicinity of some areas.</p

    Seasonal variations in air concentrations of 27 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and 25 current-use pesticides (CUPs) across three agricultural areas of South Africa

    For decades pesticides have been used in agriculture, however, the occurrence of legacy organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and current-use pesticides (CUPs) is poorly understood in Africa. This study investigates air concentrations of OCPs and CUPs in three South African agricultural areas, their spatial/seasonal variations and mixture profiles. Between 2017 and 2018, 54 polyurethane foam-disks passive air-samplers (PUF-PAS) were positioned in three agricultural areas of the Western Cape, producing mainly apples, table grapes and wheat. Within areas, 25 CUPs were measured at two sites (farm and village), and 27 OCPs at one site (farm). Kruskal-Wallis tests investigated area differences in OCPs concentrations, and linear mixed-effect models studied differences in CUPs concentrations between areas, sites and sampling rounds

    Pesticide Research on Environmental and Human Exposure and Risks in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Literature Review

    On the African continent, ongoing agriculture intensification is accompanied by the increasing use of pesticides, associated with environmental and public health concerns. Using a systematic literature review, we aimed to map current geographical research hotspots and gaps around environmental and public health risks research of agriculture pesticides in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Studies were included that collected primary data on past and current-used agricultural pesticides and assessed their environmental occurrence, related knowledge, attitude and practice, human exposure, and environmental or public health risks between 2006 and 2021. We identified 391 articles covering 469 study sites in 37 countries in SSA. Five geographical research hotspots were identified: two in South Africa, two in East Africa, and one in West Africa. Despite its ban for agricultural use, organochlorine was the most studied pesticide group (60%; 86% of studies included DDT). Current-used pesticides in agriculture were studied in 54% of the study sites (including insecticides (92%), herbicides (44%), and fungicides (35%)). Environmental samples were collected in 67% of the studies (e.g., water, aquatic species, sediment, agricultural produce, and air). In 38% of the studies, human subjects were investigated. Only few studies had a longitudinal design or assessed pesticide&rsquo;s environmental risks; human biomarkers; dose-response in human subjects, including children and women; and interventions to reduce pesticide exposure. We established a research database that can help stakeholders to address research gaps, foster research collaboration between environmental and health dimensions, and work towards sustainable and safe agriculture systems in SSA

    Child exposure to organophosphate and pyrethroid insecticides measured in urine, wristbands, and household dust and its implications for child health in South Africa: A panel study

    BACKGROUND: Children in agricultural areas are exposed to organophosphate (OP) and pyrethroid (PYR) insecticides. This explorative study investigated child exposure to OPs and PYRs, comparing temporal and spatial exposure variability within and among urine, wristbands, and dust samples. METHODS: During spraying season 2018, 38 South African children in two agricultural areas (Grabouw/Hex River Valley) and settings (farm/village) participated in a seven-day study. Child urine and household dust samples were collected on days 1 and 7. Children and their guardians were wearing silicone wristbands for seven days. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) evaluated temporal agreements between repeated urine and dust samples, Spearman rank correlations (Rs) evaluated the correlations among matrices, and linear mixed-effect models investigated spatial exposure predictors. A risk assessment was performed using reverse dosimetry. RESULTS: Eighteen OPs/PYRs were targeted in urine, wristbands, and dust. Levels of chlorpyrifos in dust (ICC = 0.92) and diethylphosphate biomarker in urine (ICC = 0.42) showed strong and moderate temporal agreement between day 1 and day 7, respectively. Weak agreements were observed for all others. There was mostly a weak correlation among the three matrices (Rs = -0.12 to 0.35), except for chlorpyrifos in dust and its biomarker 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol in urine (Rs = 0.44). No differences in exposure levels between living locations were observed. However, 21% of the urine biomarker levels exceeded the health-risk threshold for OP exposure. CONCLUSIONS: Observed high short-term variability in exposure levels during spraying season highlights the need for repeated sampling. The weak correlation between the exposure matrices points to different environmental and behavioral exposure pathways. Exceeding risk thresholds for OP should be further investigated

    Leveraging macro-social marketing to achieve sustainable development goals: a city-wide intervention addressing obesity in Brazil

    Purpose The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how macro-social marketing can contribute to the United Nations 2030 sustainable development’s goal of reducing non-communicable diseases and promoting and well-being by addressing the wicked problem of obesity. Design/methodology/approach A comprehensive, population-based intervention developed as a call-to-action movement to address obesity city-wide in Brazil was conducted and analyzed according to a macro-social marketing perspective, combined with the total process planning model (TPP). Findings The intervention was successful in effecting systemic change by targeting multi-level audiences to trigger active participation and interaction of multiple sectors at the macro, meso and micro levels; fostering the related positive behaviors of physical activity and healthful eating; and using a complementary range of intervening tools including events, mass media and social digital media. Originality/value Using a holistic view that combines macro-social marketing with the TPP, this paper offers factual evidence on how to connect research and action meaningfully to address obesity by engaging, connecting and/or partnering with multiple stakeholders in an effort to promote a healthful lifestyle and well-being

    International audienceFor decades pesticides have been used in agriculture, however, the occurrence of legacy organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and current-use pesticides (CUPs) is poorly understood in Africa. This study investigates air concentrations of OCPs and CUPs in three South African agricultural areas, their spatial/seasonal variations and mixture profiles.Between 2017 and 2018, 54 polyurethane foam-disks passive air-samplers (PUF-PAS) were positioned in three agricultural areas of the Western Cape, producing mainly apples, table grapes and wheat. Within areas, 25 CUPs were measured at two sites (farm and village), and 27 OCPs at one site (farm). Kruskal-Wallis tests investigated area differences in OCPs concentrations, and linear mixed-effect models studied differences in CUPs concentrations between areas, sites and sampling rounds.In total, 20 OCPs and 16 CUPs were detected. A median of 16 OCPs and 10 CUPs were detected per sample, making a total of 11 OCPs and 24 CUPs combinations. Eight OCPs (trans-chlordane, o,p’-/p,p’-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE)/dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), endosulfan sulfate, γ-hexachlorocyclohexane and mirex) and two CUPs (carbaryl and chlorpyrifos) were quantified in all samples. p,p’-DDE (median 0.14 ng/m3) and chlorpyrifos (median 0.70 ng/m3) showed the highest concentrations throughout the study. Several OCPs and CUPs showed different concentrations between areas and seasons, although CUPs concentrations did not differ between sites. OCPs ratios suggest ongoing chlordane use in the region, while DDT and endosulfan contamination result from past-use.Our study revealed spatial and seasonal variations of different OCPs and CUPs combinations detected in air. Further studies are needed to investigate the potential cumulative or synergistic risks of the detected pesticides
