    RELATIONSHIP AMONG COGNITIVE STYLES, PARENTAL INVOVLEMENT AND LEARNING OUTCOMES OF PUPILS IN SOCIAL STUDIES IN ONDO STATE, NIGERIA

    The study investigated the relationship among Cognitive Styles, Parental Involvement and Learning Outcomes of pupils in Social Studies in Ondo State. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population for the study comprised primary III pupils and their parents in Ondo State. The sample size consisted of 240 primary III school pupils and 240 parents selected using multistage sampling procedure. One senatorial district was selected from the state using simple random sampling technique. Two Local Government Areas (LGAs) were selected from the sampled senatorial district in Ondo State using simple random sampling technique. From each of the two selected primary schools, 30 pupils and 30 parents each from two intact classes were randomly selected for the study. Three instruments were used for data collection, they are: Cognitive Styles Questionnaire (CSQ), Pupils’ End of Term Examination Score in Social Studies (PETES) and Parental Interview Schedule (PIS). The data collected were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages and multiple regression analysis statistics. The results showed that there was no significant relationship between cognitive styles and learning outcomes (cognitive styles yielded a coefficient regression (R) of .152 and a correlation square (R2) of .023). There was also no significant relationship between parental involvement and learning outcomes (parental involvement yielded a coefficient regression (R) of .118 and a correlation square (R2) of .014). These values were statistically significant at 0.05 probability level. In addition, there was no significant relative contribution of cognitive styles and parental involvement to learning outcomes of pupils in lower primary schools. The result indicated that field independent and field dependent cognitive styles t-values = -1.696 and -1.581 respectively while their respective beta weight values = -.108 and -.101. Also, parental involvement t-value = 1.791 and beta weight = .114. The study concluded that parental involvement was a very good predictor of pupils’ learning outcomes in Social Studies in lower primary school in Ondo State.            Article visualizations

    Ultrasonic Trilateration Methods for Low-Cost Indoor Positioning

    Trilateration is a process where distances to known control points or beacons can be used as inputs to algorithms to calculate an object’s position. Most of the common trilateration methods known are fast and reliable, and based on estimating one or more location-dependent signal parameters like Times-of-arrival (TOA), Angle of Arrival (AOA) or Received Signal Strength (RSS). However, costly hardware is needed for such approaches to run reliably, and are too computationally complex both in speed and memory for low-cost hardware.  The demand for low-cost hardware has greatly increased in recent years mostly due to the rapid emergence of internet of things, that promises to bring connectivity to just about everything. As such, leveraging on cheap hardware is an important step to take to achieve accurate indoor positioning.  Because of convenience in generation and transmission, ultrasound is widely and commonly used electronically for distance measurement. The use of ultrasound with cheap hardware for accurate indoor positioning is discussed in this paper. Three localization methods that are reliable and fast enough for cheap hardware are analyzed with emphasis on the speed and memory demands.     Development of an Adaptive IIR Filter Based on Modified Robust Mixed-Norm Algorithm for Adaptive Noise Cancellation

    Noise cancellation is one of the most important applications of adaptive filters. The employment of adaptive filtering in most digital signal processing tasks is currently an area of growing interest as adaptive filters, due to their dynamic nature, perform better than the traditional filters in compensating for random noise in their environment. However, the compensation for impulsive interference or noise is desired since most adaptive algorithms earlier proposed modelled noise as a random process of the White Gaussian distribution.  A modified robust mixed-norm (MRMN) algorithm recently proposed to compensate for impulsive interference has been found to be hardware efficient, however the MRMN algorithm has only been tested on adaptive FIR system identification task. In this paper, an adaptive IIR filter based on MRMN adaptive algorithm is proposed and tested for noise cancellation task. The developed filter structure was modelled and simulated in MATLAB environment. The results obtained showed that the MRMN algorithm does in fact compensate for the presence of impulsive interference, however, at a higher computational complexity relative to the LMS algorithm.     Hand geometry recognition: an approach for closed and separated fingers

    Hand geometry has been a biometric trait that has attracted attention from several researchers. This stems from the fact that it is less intrusive and could be captured without contact with the acquisition device. Its application ranges from forensic examination to basic authentication use. However, restrictions in hand placement have proven to be one of its challenges. Users are either instructed to keep their fingers separate or closed during capture. Hence, this paper presents an approach to hand geometry using finger measurements that considers both closed and separate fingers. The system starts by cropping out the finger section of the hand and then resizing the cropped fingers. 20 distances were extracted from each finger in both separate and closed finger images. A comparison was made between Manhattan distance and Euclidean distance for features extraction. The support vector machine (SVM) was used for classification. The result showed a better result for Euclidean distance with a false acceptance ratio (FAR) of 0.6 and a false rejection ratio (FRR) of 1.2

    Corporate Entrepreneurship, HRM Practices and Firm Performance

    AIn modern business dynamics, firm growth and sustainability significantly depends on corporate entrepreneurship (CE) and entrepreneurship (E) practices. Because of their significance, we have examined the direct and indirect effect of corporate entrepreneurship (CE) and entrepreneurship (E) on firm performance (FP) in SMEs of Nigeria. We have used a sample of 387 for collecting the data non-randomly. The tool we used for collecting the data was a close-ended questionnaire, which we adapted from earlier studies. The authors have used Smart PLS for statistical analysis. We found that corporate entrepreneurship (CE), entrepreneurship (E), and human resource management (HRM) affects firm performance (FP). We also found that HRM practices also have a significant link with corporate entrepreneurship (CE), entrepreneurship (E), and firm performance (FP). The results also suggest that entrepreneurship (E) and corporate entrepreneurship (CE) mediates HRM practices and firm performance (FP). The above findings were consistent with the view that HRM practices are an essential component of an organization. HRM activities besides conventional functions also promote entrepreneurial (E) behaviour and organizational outcomes. Thus, the HRM department must continuously revisit the policies and procedures to ensure that they are aligned with the changing environment. Entrepreneurial (E) and corporate entrepreneurial (E) orientation support an environment that encourages employees to participate in decision making, which enhances employees’ sense of belonging and promote a positive attitude towards work.Keywords: Corporate entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship, practices, firm performance, Nigeri

    The role of information seminars among young people in preventing sudden arrhythmic syndrome and death (SADS)

    Educational / informational seminars were held on the prevention and care of SADS syndromes. The object of the research is 160 foreign students of medical universities in the city of Dnipro. A questionnaire has been developed to test awareness and preventive knowledge about SADS. A preliminary and post-test control group design (design of four Solomon groups) was used in a longitudinal study during 1 year of follow-up. The effectiveness of training workshops in raising awareness of short-term and long-term (after 1 year) SADS programs among student youth has been statistically confirmed

    User’s Preference of Activity in Akure Public Spaces

    Users' preferences of activities in public spaces are influenced by a variety of factors, such as personal interest, social types, available facilities, and the surrounding environment. This paper examines users' preferences for activity in Akure public spaces to explore and understand the activities that users prefer engaging in within shared spaces. Information on respondents’ socio-economic characteristics, the availability of public space, and their activities was obtained from a structured questionnaire conducted with 334 respondents from the core, transitional, and peripheral zones in Akure. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. The result shows that public spaces in the study area are used for social and religious activities, as they ranked 1st and 2nd, respectively. The result of the hypothesis testing shows that there is a significant relationship between the availability of public spaces in the study area and the activities that take place. This study recommends enforcement of the proper use of public spaces for their primary purpose of curbing indiscriminate and inappropriate use. Urban planners, architects, and policymakers should engage in designing and managing public spaces to meet the diverse needs and interests of the users

    AN EXPLORATORY STUDY ON NUMBER OF CHILDREN DESIRED AND WHAT ACCOMPLISHED IN FAMILY SETTINGS

    In any family settings, racing children is a big decision that requires serious self-reflecting and communication between couples. In African settings, there is usually a rift in the agreement of the number and the gender of children to be borne by couples; while the man prefers a male child, the wife may prefer a female child instead. The number of children by the couple also determine the kinds of education those children will eventually have later. To this effect, in this research work, we want to study the Man’s proposed and ac-tual number of children; the degree of association in the man’s decision using Quasi symmetry and Homogeneous Agreement model; how well some factors (Age, Religion, Family status, Occupation, Level of education and Ethnic group) influence the number of children; and to know the stopping rule for child bearing by the man. It was observed that 16.2% of the respondents had above the number of children proposed when they stopped bearing children, 21.5% of the respondents had below the number of children proposed when they stopped while 62.3% of the respondents had the exact number of children proposed when they eventually stopped bearing children. We observed that Age and Religion influence the number of children. We also observed that the probability ( p) of having at least one male child is 0.8019 based on the available data.     MODELLING THE IMPACTS OF SELECTED WATERSHED MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES ON SEDIMENT REDUCTION UPSTREAM OF SHIRORO DAM, NIGERIA

    This research utilized a regulated hydrological model, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) interfaced with Geographical Information System (GIS), in studying the effectiveness of the chosen watershed management strategies on sediment reduction upstream of Shiroro dam, Nigeria. Selected management approaches were modelled while calibration and validation of the model were achieved using observed streamflow data. Findings indicated a good correlation during calibration and validation period. Application of reforestation, vegetative filter strips and stone bunds in the watershed reduces sediment production by 27 %, 39 %, and 15 % respectively. Thus, the sediment management scenarios depicted within this research are considerably sustainable and effective
