The Ultimate Halo Mass in a LCDM Universe
In the far future of an accelerating LCDM cosmology, the cosmic web of
large-scale structure consists of a set of increasingly isolated halos in
dynamical equilibrium. We examine the approach of collisionless dark matter to
hydrostatic equilibrium using a large N-body simulation evolved to scale factor
a = 100, well beyond the vacuum--matter equality epoch, a_eq ~ 0.75, and 53/h
Gyr into the future for a concordance model universe (Omega_m ~ 0.3,
Omega_Lambda ~ 0.7). The radial phase-space structure of halos -- characterized
at a < a_eq by a pair of zero-velocity surfaces that bracket a dynamically
active accretion region -- simplifies at a > 10 a_eq when these surfaces merge
to create a single zero-velocity surface, clearly defining the halo outer
boundary, rhalo, and its enclosed mass, mhalo. This boundary approaches a fixed
physical size encompassing a mean interior density ~ 5 times the critical
density, similar to the turnaround value in a classical Einstein-deSitter
model. We relate mhalo to other scales currently used to define halo mass
(m200, mvir, m180b) and find that m200 is approximately half of the total
asymptotic cluster mass, while m180b follows the evolution of the inner zero
velocity surface for a < 2 but becomes much larger than the total bound mass
for a > 3. The radial density profile of all bound halo material is well fit by
a truncated Hernquist profile. An NFW profile provides a somewhat better fit
interior to r200 but is much too shallow in the range r200 < r < rhalo.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to MNRAS letter
Light curves for bump Cepheids computed with a dynamically zoned pulsation code
The dynamically zoned pulsation code developed by Castor, Davis, and Davison was used to recalculate the Goddard model and to calculate three other Cepheid models with the same period (9.8 days). This family of models shows how the bumps and other features of the light and velocity curves change as the mass is varied at constant period. The use of a code that is capable of producing reliable light curves demonstrates that the light and velocity curves for 9.8 day Cepheid models with standard homogeneous compositions do not show bumps like those that are observed unless the mass is significantly lower than the 'evolutionary mass.' The light and velocity curves for the Goddard model presented here are similar to those computed independently by Fischel, Sparks, and Karp. They should be useful as standards for future investigators
Landau Collision Integral Solver with Adaptive Mesh Refinement on Emerging Architectures
The Landau collision integral is an accurate model for the small-angle
dominated Coulomb collisions in fusion plasmas. We investigate a high order
accurate, fully conservative, finite element discretization of the nonlinear
multi-species Landau integral with adaptive mesh refinement using the PETSc
library (www.mcs.anl.gov/petsc). We develop algorithms and techniques to
efficiently utilize emerging architectures with an approach that minimizes
memory usage and movement and is suitable for vector processing. The Landau
collision integral is vectorized with Intel AVX-512 intrinsics and the solver
sustains as much as 22% of the theoretical peak flop rate of the Second
Generation Intel Xeon Phi, Knights Landing, processor
Rearing of all Male Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus) Fingerlings with Chicken Manure and Mixture of Chicken Manure and Commercial Diet in Fibre Glass Tank
Mono-sex population of Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings were collected from Nigerian Institute for oceanography and Marine Research Sapele station Hatchery and acclimatized for a week and randomly stocked at density of 300 fish/tank in nine fibre glass tank. The fingerling were fed daily 800h and 1600h with three different types of feed (Dry chicken manure, mixture of chicken manure and commercial diet, and commercial (coppens) only.
Each treatment was replicated three times. The water quality parameters are within tolerant limit. The growth response in all the treatment wee generally satisfactory. Though treatment T3 Tanks fed with commercial diet only (coppens) had better growth performance compared with treatment T2 and T1, chicken manure and mixture of chicken manure and commercial diet respectively.
The results demonstrate the feasibility of rearing all male tilapia (O. niloticus) fingerlings in fiber glass tanks
Low-latency analysis pipeline for compact binary coalescences in the advanced gravitational wave detector era
The multi-band template analysis (MBTA) pipeline is a low-latency coincident
analysis pipeline for the detection of gravitational waves (GWs) from compact
binary coalescences. MBTA runs with a low computational cost, and can identify
candidate GW events online with a sub-minute latency. The low computational
running cost of MBTA also makes it useful for data quality studies. Events
detected by MBTA online can be used to alert astronomical partners for
electromagnetic follow-up. We outline the current status of MBTA and give
details of recent pipeline upgrades and validation tests that were performed in
preparation for the first advanced detector observing period. The MBTA pipeline
is ready for the outset of the advanced detector era and the exciting prospects
it will bring.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figure
QSO 0130-4021: A third QSO showing a low Deuterium to Hydrogen Abundance Ratio
We have discovered a third quasar absorption system which is consistent with
a low deuterium to hydrogen abundance ratio, D/H = 3.4 times 10^-5. The z ~ 2.8
partial Lyman limit system towards QSO 0130-4021 provides the strongest
evidence to date against large D/H ratios because the H I absorption, which
consists of a single high column density component with unsaturated high order
Lyman series lines, is readily modeled -- a task which is more complex in other
D/H systems. We have obtained twenty-two hours of spectra from the HIRES
spectrograph on the W.M. Keck telescope, which allow a detailed description of
the Hydrogen. We see excess absorption on the blue wing of the H I Lyman alpha
line, near the expected position of Deuterium. However, we find that Deuterium
cannot explain all of the excess absorption, and hence there must be
contamination by additional absorption, probably H I. This extra H I can
account for most or all of the absorption at the D position, and hence D/H = 0
is allowed. We find an upper limit of D/H < 6.7 times 10^-5 in this system,
consistent with the value of D/H ~ 3.4 times 10^-5 deduced towards QSO
1009+2956 and QSO 1937-1009 by Burles and Tytler (1998a, 1998b). This
absorption system shows only weak metal line absorption, and we estimate [Si/H]
< -2.6 -- indicating that the D/H ratio of the system is likely primordial. All
four of the known high redshift absorption line systems simple enough to
provide useful limits on D are consistent with D/H = 3.4 +/- 0.25 times 10^-5.
Conversely, this QSO provides the third case which is inconsistent with much
larger values.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Ap
Uniaxial pressure dependence of magnetic order in MnSi
We report comprehensive small angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements
complemented by ac susceptibility data of the helical order, conical phase and
skyrmion lattice phase (SLP) in MnSi under uniaxial pressures. For all
crystallographic orientations uniaxial pressure favours the phase for which a
spatial modulation of the magnetization is closest to the pressure axis.
Uniaxial pressures as low as 1kbar applied perpendicular to the magnetic field
axis enhance the skyrmion lattice phase substantially, whereas the skyrmion
lattice phase is suppressed for pressure parallel to the field. Taken together
we present quantitative microscopic information how strain couples to magnetic
order in the chiral magnet MnSi.Comment: 23 pages, includes supplemen
Systematic study of high- hadron and photon production with the PHENIX experiment
The suppression of hadrons with large transverse momentum () in
central Au+Au collisions at = 200 GeV compared to a binary
scaled p+p reference is one of the major discoveries at RHIC. To understand the
nature of this suppression PHENIX has performed detailed studies of the energy
and system-size dependence of the suppression pattern, including the first RHIC
measurement near SPS energies. An additional source of information is provided
by direct photons. Since they escape the medium basically unaffected they can
provide a high baseline for hard-scattering processes.
An overview of hadron production at high in different colliding
systems and at energies from GeV will be
given. In addition, the latest direct photon measurements by the PHENIX
experiment shall be discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, Proceeding for the Conference Strangeness in
