    Possible Suppression of Resonant Signals for Split-UED by Mixing at the LHC?

    The mixing of the imaginary parts of the transition amplitudes of nearby resonances via the breakdown of the Breit-Wigner approximation has been shown to lead to potentially large modifications in the signal rates for new physics at colliders. In the case of suppression, this effect may be significant enough to lead to some new physics signatures being initially missed in searches at, e.g., the LHC. Here we explore the influence of this `width mixing' on the production of the nearly degenerate, level-2 Kaluza-Klein (KK) neutral gauge bosons present in Split-UED. We demonstrate that in this particular case large cross section modifications in the resonance region are necessarily absent and explain why this is so based on the group theoretical structure of the SM.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures; discussion and references adde

    Remote Stratigraphic Analysis: Combined TM and AIS Results in the Wind River/bighorn Basin Area, Wyoming

    An in-progress study demonstrates the utility of airborne imaging spectrometer (AIS) data for unraveling the stratigraphic evolution of a North American, western interior foreland basin. AIS data are used to determine the stratigraphic distribution of mineralogical facies that are diagnostic of specific depositional environments. After wavelength and amplitude calibration using natural ground targets with known spectral characteristics, AIS data identify calcite, dolomite, gypsum and montmorillonite-bearing strata in the Permian-Cretaceous sequence. Combined AIS and TM results illustrate the feasibility of spectral stratigraphy, remote analysis of stratigraphic sequences

    Predicting Stellar Angular Diameters from VV, ICI_C, HH, KK Photometry

    Determining the physical properties of microlensing events depends on having accurate angular sizes of the source star. Using long-baseline optical interferometry we are able to measure the angular sizes of nearby stars with uncertainties ≤2%\leq 2\%. We present empirically derived relations of angular diameters that are calibrated using both a sample of dwarfs/subgiants and a sample of giant stars. These relations are functions of five color indices in the visible and near-infrared, and have uncertainties of 1.8-6.5% depending on the color used. We find that a combined sample of both main-sequence and evolved stars of A-K spectral types is well fit by a single relation for each color considered. We find that in the colors considered, metallicity does not play a statistically significant role in predicting stellar size, leading to a means of predicting observed sizes of stars from color alone.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Activation of Long Descending Propriospinal Neurons in Cat Spinal Cord

    Isolated mammalian spinal cord has been shown capable of generating locomotor activity. Propriospinal systems assumed to coordinate fore- and hindlimb activity are poorly understood. This study characterizes the long descending propriospinal (LDP) neurons in terms of the location of the somas and their peripheral inputs by direct neuronal recording. Anatomical studies using axonal retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase from the lumbar to the cervical spinal cord as a tracer first described these neurons. Two hundred and thirty-one LDP neurons were identified in electrophysiological experiments. Of these, 123 responded to natural stimulation, and about 50% of the others were activated only by electrical stimulation. The majority of cells were located in laminae VII and VIII in agreement with anatomical data. The most effective stimuli were mechanical stimulation of skin, deep pressure to subcutaneous tissues, and paw joint movement. Bot excitatory and inhibitory responses were observed

    Strong electron correlations in cobalt valence tautomers

    We have examined cobalt based valence tautomer molecules such as Co(SQ)2_2(phen) using density functional theory (DFT) and variational configuration interaction (VCI) approaches based upon a model Hamiltonian. Our DFT results extend earlier work by finding a reduced total energy gap (order 0.6 eV) between high temperature and low temperature states when we fully relax the coordinates (relative to experimental ones). Futhermore we demonstrate that the charge transfer picture based upon formal valence arguments succeeds qualitatively while failing quantitatively due to strong covalency between the Co 3dd orbitals and ligand pp orbitals. With the VCI approach, we argue that the high temperature, high spin phase is strongly mixed valent, with about 30 % admixture of Co(III) into the predominantly Co(II) ground state. We confirm this mixed valence through a fit to the XANES spectra. Moreover, the strong electron correlations of the mixed valent phase provide an energy lowering of about 0.2-0.3 eV of the high temperature phase relative to the low temperature one. Finally, we use the domain model to account for the extraordinarily large entropy and enthalpy values associated with the transition.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, submitted to J. Chem. Phy
