Stock Market Reaction To Chief Marketing Officer Appointment Announcements

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the stock price performance of 166 firms appointing a new Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) between 1999 and 2005. Following event study methodology, the results reveal that abnormal stock returns around the appointment day are greater for firms appointing a CMO with prior marketing executive experience, in firms where the new CMO explains the intended future marketing strategy on the appointment announcement day, whereas it is lower in firms operating in higher growth, high technology industries with higher product differentiation. Announcement-induced returns are also greater for firms that experienced poor stock price performance in the year leading to the appointment. Taken together, the results suggest that the marketā€™s assessment of a change in marketing leadership should not be viewed as being uniformly beneficial, but should be assessed against the profile of the appointee and the appointing firm

Prospects and Limits of Tourism-Led Growth: The International Evidence

We investigate the relationship between tourism specialization and economic growth. We deviate from previous studies - which have reported mixed evidence - by allowing the relationship to take a nonlinear form. We find that tourism specialization is associated with higher rates of economic growth at relatively low levels of specialization but eventually diminishing returns set in and tourism's contribution becomes minimal. The policy lesson is that there is promise for tourism-led growth in developing countries but other economic activities must also be developed in order to carry the economy forward once the potential of tourism-led growth has been exhausted.tourism, tourism specialization, economic growth

Designing Carbon Taxation Schemes for Automobiles: A Simulation Exercise for Germany

    Get PDF
Vehicle taxation based on CO2 emissions is increasingly being adopted worldwide in order to shift consumer purchases to low-carbon cars, yet little is known about the effectiveness and overall economic impact of these schemes. We focus on feebate schemes, which impose a fee on high-carbon vehicles and give a rebate to purchasers of low-carbon automobiles. We estimate a discrete choice model of demand for automobiles in Germany and simulate the impact of alternative feebate schemes on emissions, consumer welfare, public revenues and firm profits. The analysis shows that a well-designed scheme can lead to emission reductions without reducing overall welfare.CO2 emissions, German automobile market, feebates, carbon taxation

THE PERCEIVED LEVEL OF COMPETENCE BASED ON EXPERIENCE AND GENDER OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF OF PRIMARY EDUCATION IN GREECE AND THE NEED FOR TRAINING

The ideas of ā€˜competenceā€™ and ā€˜competenciesā€™ have become central in the last decades in education, as experts have focused their interest on the importance of setting learning objectives in order to help students familiarise themselves with the learning process. In the present study, it is examined whether there is a difference in the perceptions of the administrative staff (both principals and vice-principals) on their level of competence as far as their experience (experienced or novice - inexperienced) and a common personal characteristic, such as their gender (male or female), are concerned. A total of 412 administrative staff that is 261 principals 151 vice-principals responded to a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire. The statistical comparison was performed by applying the 2-factor analysis of variation (ANOVA). This analysis was preceded by check for equality of variance between the respective groups (Leveneā€™s test). Based on the findings concerning experience and gender correlation, it is revealed that the greatest need for training seems to concern novice female primary school administrative staff, while on the contrary, the least need for training concerns the experienced male ones. Training programme designers should take this fact very seriously when creating educational courses

Effects of illumination on the conductivity properties of spacecraft insulating materials

Experimental data on the dark and illuminated conductivities of Kapton V and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVF2) films are described as well as the changes in insulating properties produced in Kapton H, Kapton V, PVF2, and FEP Teflon films as result of prolonged exposure to solar illumination. An overall summary of the results of tests is presented. A general introduction and a description of the experimental apparatus and procedures used are also given

Splinters from the Bamboo Ceiling: Understanding the Experiences of Asian American Men in Higher Education Leadership

Asian Americans continue to confront perceptions connected to the perpetual foreigner and model minority concepts which challenges their acceptance as leaders in mainstream American culture. Asian men have recently been able to attain higher levels of education that opens doors to higher level positions and organizations yet still face barriers to career advancement opportunities. In consideration of the American higher education system, Whites continue to exceed their proportional representation in areas of the institution while Asian Americans do not. The purpose of this study is to understand how the intersection of racial and gender identity has influenced leadership through the experiences of male, Asian American higher administrators in American colleges and universities. This qualitative, phenomenological study involved recruiting 13 participants through purposeful sampling processes and snowball sampling, identifying Asian American men in American higher education leadership or managerial roles with a minimum of 10 years of experience. Various findings emerged as each primary question was analyzed. Themes that include: (a) isolation, (b) overcompensation, (c) added responsibility, and (d) continued discrimination assisted to uncover any advantages or disadvantages that come with identifying as both Asian American and male in higher education leadership. In addition, themes such as: (a) unconscious use of privilege, (b) race as an added layer, (c) assertiveness, (d) queerness, and (e) understanding barriers for women, illuminated how characteristics of masculinity affect the experiences of the participants. Continually, concepts such as: (a) bamboo ceiling, (b) invalidation as a racial minority, (c) anti-blackness, and (d) geographic location were all indicated as aspects connected to racism experienced by the participants. Finally, in understanding how Asian American male leaders navigate barriers to career advancement in higher education the following topics were shared: (a) mentorship, networking, and sponsorship, (b) education, (c) professional development opportunities, (d) negotiating authenticity, (e) combatting stereotypes, (f) determining fit, and (g) perceptions of multicultural affairs. The data collected in this study revealed the prevalence of White supremacy and hegemonic masculinity and their influences on the leadership structures in higher education. For Asian American men, their racial and gender identities compound themselves to create different forms of discrimination that are not as understood within conventional ways of thinking about racism and male privilege
