    Cellular population dynamics control the robustness of the stem cell niche.

    Within populations of cells, fate decisions are controlled by an indeterminate combination of cell-intrinsic and cell-extrinsic factors. In the case of stem cells, the stem cell niche is believed to maintain 'stemness' through communication and interactions between the stem cells and one or more other cell-types that contribute to the niche conditions. To investigate the robustness of cell fate decisions in the stem cell hierarchy and the role that the niche plays, we introduce simple mathematical models of stem and progenitor cells, their progeny and their interplay in the niche. These models capture the fundamental processes of proliferation and differentiation and allow us to consider alternative possibilities regarding how niche-mediated signalling feedback regulates the niche dynamics. Generalised stability analysis of these stem cell niche systems enables us to describe the stability properties of each model. We find that although the number of feasible states depends on the model, their probabilities of stability in general do not: stem cell-niche models are stable across a wide range of parameters. We demonstrate that niche-mediated feedback increases the number of stable steady states, and show how distinct cell states have distinct branching characteristics. The ecological feedback and interactions mediated by the stem cell niche thus lend (surprisingly) high levels of robustness to the stem and progenitor cell population dynamics. Furthermore, cell-cell interactions are sufficient for populations of stem cells and their progeny to achieve stability and maintain homeostasis. We show that the robustness of the niche - and hence of the stem cell pool in the niche - depends only weakly, if at all, on the complexity of the niche make-up: simple as well as complicated niche systems are capable of supporting robust and stable stem cell dynamics

    Intergenerational trauma refers to the impact a traumatic experience has on subsequent generations that were not directly exposed to the original traumatic event. Existing research has shown that trauma affects subsequent generations biologically, culturally, and emotionally. The current study explored the question: To what extent, if any, does intergenerational trauma affect and transmit among African and Middle Eastern American subgroups living in Portland, Maine? This qualitative study utilized a phenomenological approach. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with staff employed at local agencies who work directly with African and Middle Eastern migrant families. We hypothesized that intergenerational trauma is being transmitted among African and Middle Eastern migrant families living in Portland, ME

    Optimization techniques for human computation-enabled data processing systems

These marketplaces are increasingly widely used, with projections of over $1 billion being transferred between crowd employers and crowd workers by the end of 2012. While crowdsourcing enables forms of computation that artificial intelligence has not yet achieved, it also presents crowd workflow designers with a series of challenges including describing tasks, pricing tasks, identifying and rewarding worker quality, dealing with incorrect responses, and integrating human computation into traditional programming frameworks. In this dissertation, we explore the systems-building, operator design, and optimization challenges involved in building a crowd-powered workflow management system. We describe a system called Qurk that utilizes techniques from databases such as declarative workflow definition, high-latency workflow execution, and query optimization to aid crowd-powered workflow developers. We study how crowdsourcing can enhance the capabilities of traditional databases by evaluating how to implement basic database operators such as sorts and joins on datasets that could not have been processed using traditional computation frameworks. Finally, we explore the symbiotic relationship between the crowd and query optimization, enlisting crowd workers to perform selectivity estimation, a key component in optimizing complex crowd-powered workflows.by Adam Marcus.Ph.D

    BlendDB : blending table layouts to support efficient browsing of relational databases

Such an implementation is good for queries that filter or aggregate large portions of a single table, and provides reasonable performance for queries that join many records from one table to another. It is much less ideal, however, for join queries that follow paths from a small number of tuples in one table to small collections of tuples in other tables to accumulate facts about a related collection of objects (e.g., co-authors of a particular author in a publications database), since answering such queries involves one or more random I/Os per table involved in the path. If the primary workload of a database consists of many such path queries, as is likely to be the case when supporting browsing-oriented applications, performance will be quite poor. This thesis focuses on optimizing the performance of these kinds of path queries in a system called BlendDB, a relational database that supports on-disk co-location of tuples from different relations. To make BlendDB efficient, the thesis will propose a clustering algorithm that, given knowledge of the database workload, co-locates the tuples of multiple relations if they join along common paths. To support the claim of improved performance, the thesis will include experiments in which BlendDB provides better performance than traditional relational databases on queries against the IMDB movie dataset. Additionally, this thesis will show that BlendDB provides commensurate performance to materialized views while using less disk space, and can achieve better performance than materialized views in exchange for more disk space when users navigate between related items in the database.by Adam Marcus.S.M

    Door Security is a facility to meet the needs of security in the home space by prioritizing easy access. This system was developed with an IoT-based dual lock door security system using Fingerprint and RFID as entry access, using a card so that the RFID sensor can read it and a fingerprint so that the Fingerprint sensor can read it. In this system there are 2 parts, namely the RFID sensor and the Fingerprint sensor. The RFID card is read by the RFID sensor which contains the card owner's data obtained during registration. Meanwhile, fingerprints are read by the fingerprint sensor which contains the owner's data obtained during registration. The RFID card is used for the initial sequence method then fingerprints for the second sequence method to unlock the door or it is called a solenoid doorlock. The way it works is by attaching the two cards to the RFID sensor in sequence, after which the fingerprint is attached to the Fingerprint sensor until the locking door opens and closes again after it takes 10 seconds. All activities are recorded in data so that they can appear in the Telegram application. The use of RFID and Fingerprint sensors hopes that the security of the door system can make the security system good and safe. From all that can come the lack of security of the door
